Birds in Bedfords Park - Green singing finch and a cuckoo

, , , , , , , , , , ,

The first bird I photograph on Wednesday was the swan family I photographed before in Rapheal Park

Up at Bedfords park visitor centre there is a new resident. A green singing finch turned up earlier this week and can be seen hanging around the centre feeding on the grass seeds. Its almost definately an escapee as its native to Afica. I also got this video
Later when I was photographing scorpionflys I heard a familar call getting closer. The cuckoo then appeared and landed in a tree nearby. It was close enough for me to hear a laughing-like call between the "cuckoo"s. It wasnt quite close enough in the tree thou so this was the best I could manage I did manage to get some video of it calling though
It did move even closer but was up in an Oak tree out of sight. And I manged to see my second cuckoo of the year in Ingrebourne NR before I saw the demoiselles. Insects in Bedfords park still to come

Very interesting!!! My husband lived in SA for quite a few years and has told me that there are green finches by the thousands there. He also mentioned that they build their nests upside down in the thorn trees. Do they do that in the UK too?

Very nice to hear the cuckoo. My children did a lot of singing when they were quite young and many of their assigned songs mentioned cuckoos and larks. Interesting to finally hear one!

Th green singing finch is a lone escapee. I dont think there have ever been enough of them together to breed in the wild (there one of escaped pets.) Mind you its omething worth looking into

Pretty little finch! I'm yet to see one of those on the loose. I did spot a green macaw a few years back though (did I tell you that already?) That was a major shock!

Well done indeed for the cuckoo - a very hard species to see at all!
