Common toads breeding

, , , , , , , ,

About a month ago when I headed up to Bedfords Park, the common toads were courting and breeding in the main lake.

The frogs had already been and gone (you can see the spawn on the left of these photos) and the toad were breeding in the same area

There was a mating ball, which is where many males try to mate with one female, which sadly often ends with some of the toads drowning

But there were plenty calling away by themselves

I did check the following day for more toads but unfortunately there was a dog jumping around in the exact area the toads were spawning the previous day. No tadpoles were reported this year so I fear the dog damaged most the spawn, but hopefully they just disappeared into the big lake.

On the way out, I got a couple of shots of the sunset

Excellent shots - very nice reflection of the frog in the water.

Great pictures

Glad they look so healthy. I found a toad with red leg disease a couple of weekends back :frown:

Wulpen - thanks

Cakkleberry - Thank you. I rather like the reflection shots. The light was such that a low angle gave great reflections and a high angle gave the underwater views, which was handy for photos

Mark - thanks, it certainly is¬

Adele - cheers. Bad news on the red leg, its the last thing amphibians need right now :frown:
