Waxwings in Pitsea, Essex

, , , ...

The waxwings have returned to Pitsea, Essex. These exotic looking Scandinavian visitors visit the UK in winter time in search of berries to feed on, namely those of the rowan and cotoneaster plants. They are pretty much and annual visitor to the Pitsea area where they tend to gather in the rowan and cotoneaster which grow car parks of Tesco, Lidl, Go Outdoors and Aldi.
They have been around since just before Christmas and were still there today, where I got good eye level views in a small Rowan tree in the Go Outdoors car park and they perched up a nearby tree next to the Tesco petrol garage when not feeding. They then flew off towards Aldi, followed by a number of keen birdwatchers in their cars! They appear to be flying between the different car park throughout the day, so those wishing to see them would do well to call into each one and look out for a crowd bearing binoculars and cameras with long lenses!

Beadnell arctic and little tern colony

, , , ...

The day after visiting Paxon House we were meant to get the boat to the Farne Islands, but the boats were not running due to the high swell in the windy overcast weather. So we decided to head to Beadnell, a piece of land owned by the national trust which is host to a colony of little and arctic terns. I was a bit of a walk along the beach but as we reached the river we could see the colony on the other side and a few little terns where flying over it.little tern 2

Rabbit kit close ups

On Wednesday I came across a very tame rabbit kit. I was tucked in some short vegetation which made it awkward to photograph but it was working on removing some of it for me!
