Kestrel mobbed by jackdaw

After the last post on a buzzard being mobbed, here is another bird or prey that didn't fair much better. This kestrel was happily hovering away, not far from where I was standing.

Buzzard mobbed by jackdaws and parakeets

, , , ...

While down at the main lakes in Richmond Park I spotted a group of birds in the sky. It turned out to be a buzzard (a first me within Greater London) being mobbed not just by jackdaws, which is not such an unusual sight, but by ring necked parakeets as well!

Snow in Bedfords, Rise and Raphaels Park

, , , ...

Here are the photos from last Wednesday. The snow was still thick, despite the sunny weather and the fact it hadn't snowed for a day or two. Walking through Rise Park, I noticed something moving in the ditch right next to me. There, flicking leaves like a blackbird, a metre away, was redwing! It moved of but I could get within about 3m of it with ease, by far the tamest redwing I've ever encountered.

Richmond Hill - Kestrel encounter

, , , ...

I thought I'd start from the end of my trip Saturday, for no particular reason!
As we left Richmond Park we pass through Richmond Hill which has a steep, long grassed bank along the R. Thames side, which has a great view. This was occupied but 100+ people, mostly at the top on the path, but a number of groups were sat down or flying kites. Imagine my surprise when a kestrel started hovering among this lot and diving for prey, one time about 10 feet from a group of amazed teenagers. Being on a slope it was hovering in a matter of metres away, level with me at times, and amazing sight it was. Unfortunately a combination of limited equipment (although thankfully my camera was on centre weighted metering and autofocus) and limited experince of shooting flying objects I only manged a few ok shots
