Kestrel at Conyer

Another set of photos from the weekend before last. We went for a walk along the coast near Conyer, but there were no waders about apart form a couple of little egrets, and any other wildlife was scared of by that eternal pain in the behind for wildlife photographers: the dog of a lease with the owner not even bothering to keep tabs on it. This one was even running across the saltmarsh! Thankfully they had long disappeared when I came acroos a kestrel on a fence post. Unfortunately there was a group of ramblers about 30 seconds behind us and the kestrel was a couple of metres from the path ahead. Richmond Hill - Kestrel encounter

I thought I'd start from the end of my trip Saturday, for no particular reason!
As we left Richmond Park we pass through Richmond Hill which has a steep, long grassed bank along the R. Thames side, which has a great view. This was occupied but 100+ people, mostly at the top on the path, but a number of groups were sat down or flying kites. Imagine my surprise when a kestrel started hovering among this lot and diving for prey, one time about 10 feet from a group of amazed teenagers. Being on a slope it was hovering in a matter of metres away, level with me at times, and amazing sight it was. Unfortunately a combination of limited equipment (although thankfully my camera was on centre weighted metering and autofocus) and limited experince of shooting flying objects I only manged a few ok shots

Regents park wildlife

With the work experience, exam revison and bad weather, I havent been out nearly as much as I'd have liked, but today mad e up for it. Today was what I would refer to as a GOOD day. Activity heron wise was limited (hence this isn't a 'heronry report') but there was some herons, more on them later. I have to start with the two highlights. First up, the kestrels. On my previous visit report I mentioned and photographed (poorly) the nesting pair of kestrels. Well today Tony Duckett, the wildlife officver was kind enough to let me get closer to the male:
