On monday for a school visit we looked at the contents of barn owl pellets. For those who are unfamiliar with owl pellets, they are the undigestable bits (fur, bone etc.) that the owl coughs up after a meal. By breaking these up and looking at the contents you can find the bones of their prey, usually small mammals. Here are a few things that were found:

On my way to the Natural History Musuem I walked through Green Park and Kensington Gardens. In Green Park these greylags looked a little lost - as there are no ponds or lakes in Green Park (unlike all the other royal parks!)

DId some more volunteering up at bedfords today and had my first visit with decent weather for a while. Unfortunately the swarms of dragonflies and damselflies had still failed to materalise and may not at all this year. On the upside I did get my first small red-eyed damselfly of the year

Today on the way home I took a couple of large diversions. First up was Darland banks, a chalkhill nature reserve run by Kent Wildlife Trust. Entering the reserve I noticed a colourful 'fly' and knew instantly what it was since I've wanted to photograph one since I got my camera: a ruby-tailed wasp (
Chrysis ignita), and type of jewel wasp.
