Romford wildlife

, , , ...

Yesterday I had a walk through the usual three parks. The weather wasnt fantastic but it did mean the parks were less busy - and the wildlife came out
The first notable thing was in the Raphael's Park lake. The cormorant was hunting in the narrow end again, and with no dogs to scare it off I managed a few shots, this being the best

Raphaels, Rise and Bedfords Park

Yesterday morning I got up early in a feeble attempt to beat the dog walkers (I think there was more than usual), but the wildlife and I managed to squeeze into the brief gaps between the dogs! lol. In fact I think most my photo oppertunities were ended by a dog scaring them wildlife off! Still it was productive morning. The grey squirrels were obviously having a lie in, so the first thing I encounter in Raphaels Park was this lovely great crested grebe

raphaels and bedfords park

Last Wednesday I was free and the weather was good, a rare combination, so I headed out to try photograph some more squirrel close ups. But being half term the park was packed and the squirrels unusually scare. I did get a surprise at the lake: the water level has been lowered about 1-2m so repair work can be carried out on the bank and this has created some shallow areas, shallow enough for a heron to hunt. This is the closest I've got to a heron in Essex

Regents park - the last heronry report

, , , ...

Yesterday I went to Regents Park for a quick wander round. Ill start by concluding the heronry reports. Most of the chicks appeared to have fledged now so there won't be anything to report soon. I did see some adults collecting stick thou, so I guess we'll see.
The grey heron fledglings are still around and I saw at least 3 in the park. Here is one of them

my, haven't they grown!

About 3 weeks ago as part of my long post exam tour of the parks of Romford I wandered through Raphaels park and photographed a coot feeding its chicks(see here, second photo down). I visited again today and in roughly the same spot was a brood of four chicks: they all seemed to have survived and they,ve grown!

A visit to Raphaels Park and Ingrebourne valley and harrow lodge park and Dagenham chase - a busy day!

, , , ...

On Thursday I finally had a free day and the weather was good  So I thought I'd head for part of the Ingrebourne river and the parks reserves it flow through: Ingrebourne Nature Reserve, Hornchurch Country Park and Berwick Woods. I started of in Raphaels park as its only a small diversion from the walk to the bus stop. There I was treated to a great crested grebe hunting for breakfast

local redwings

, , , ...

I mentioned last month that I had seen redwings in my local area for the first time (see here). Well yeaterday I saw a flock of 41(!) on the field in Raphaels park. I started to creep towards them only for a dog walker to cut across the field in front of me (he could see what I was doing but didn't care ). So I started again, only for another dog walker to do the same! lol! . Anyway enough with the ranting, here are the photos (apologise for the quality, it was getting dark and there small birds;))

A walk through Romfords Parks

, , , ...

I had a half day yesterday and rather than go Regents park again, I decided to have a walk around my usual haunts and do some recording for the East London bird forum. First stop was Raphaels Park where as I entered I saw a pair of Great crested grebes performing courtship - the phase where they swim so fast that their body rises completely out of the water, at an angle of 45 degrees. Of course I didn't get any photographs of it... But there was another grebe who was more co-operative:
