Bedfords Park: red deer, woodpecker and devils coach horse

, , , ...

In between my 2 visits to Raphaels Park on Saturday I went up to Bedfords Park. It was quiet, both in terms of people and wildlife, but in the deer pen one of the stags was dozing in the autumn sun

Raphaels park - cormorants, mallards and a confused pair of great crested grebes

, , , ...

On Mondays visit to Raphaels park my aim was to get some nice photos of grey squirrels and great crested grebes. But by the time the sun had risen high enough to hit the lake, the grebes had moved off to the back of the lake and the large number of dog walkers had scared the squirrels up the trees. I did however manage a few photos of some mallards in the morning sun

Shaggy Ink Caps and a lazy squirrel

, , , ...

Tuesday before last, after going to Rainham Marshes, I stopped off at Hornchurch Country Park to explore the Ingrebourne Valley. Unfortunately it was as dead as Rainham, the marsh there had almost dried up. But up in a field I came across more than 50 shaggy ink cap toadstools: some just emerging

Goldcrest - britains smallest bird at Hanningfield

, , , ...

On Monday I ended up at Hanningfield Essex Wildlife Trust nature reserve, where thanks to the dry weatehr we have had this year here in Essex, the reservoir is very low (just above 50% capicity I'm told) so the birds hides were to far from the water for any photography. But just as I was about to give hope of getting anything I noticed a little bird feeding in the hedgerowA goldcrest

Tame squirrels and macro fun

, , , ...

Yesterday I headed to Raphaels Park a bit later than sunrise in the hope I would avoid the bulk of the dog walkers, which I had some success with. I wanted to avoid the dog walkers so the grey squirrels would be more cooperative and come close, so I could try out my new 100mm pentax macro lens

I had some success

Goldfinches at Rainham Marshes

, , , ...

Last Tuesday I headed to Rainham Marshes on a day off. I was meant to be heading to Chelmsford to see a Red throated diver (or loon) that had turned up in the park there, but it had left on the Monday (and was sadly later found dead), so I head to Rainham marshes instead. It was a bit disappointing to be honest, as the water level was very low, with many of the better marsh frog and little grebe areas completely dry. But on the bird feeders I finally got a bogey species: the goldfinch

Seasalter meadow pipit

, , , ...

Apologies for the lack of posts recently, to be honest Ive simply not had many photos to post about or the time to write some interesting stuff about wildlife in general. Last weekend was quite unproductive, with very little seen (I missed out on the Shrike at Stodmarsh, despite visiting the site Sunday). But I did get this meadow pipit at Seasalter on Sunday, which was a nice consolation

Foggy morning

, , , ...

On Friday morning, I had a foggy start, and most of the wildlife was either out of sight in the fog or waiting for the sun to burn through. There were plenty of spiderwebs highlighted by the low sun and dew that had condensed on their threads

Skylarks at Reculver and whimbrels at Seasalter

, , , ...

Last Sunday went to Reculver in search of waders. Unfortunately the beach was nearly covered by the tide when I got there, and being Sunday morning the area was swarming with dogs and their walkers. I held out little hope of seeing anything but gulls, but went for a nice walk anyway. On top of the cliff is Reculver country park, which is a long thin park with a path running along the cliff and another along the border and a 10m or so band of long grass between the two. Amazingly, despite the constant stream of dogs on both paths, the long grass held 2 or 3 skylarks
