Owl pellets

, , , ...

On monday for a school visit we looked at the contents of barn owl pellets. For those who are unfamiliar with owl pellets, they are the undigestable bits (fur, bone etc.) that the owl coughs up after a meal. By breaking these up and looking at the contents you can find the bones of their prey, usually small mammals. Here are a few things that were found:

Havering council - bad park managment

Apologise for this rant, but I feel it needs to be said:

The area I live in is run by Havering council, and over the last two years I've noticed many cases of ignorance and sometimes damn right stupidity in their management of parks. So we quickly popped down to Oare Marshes before the sunset. The light was not great as the sun disappeared behind cloud and it was late in the day, but the photos came out ok. There were a few little egrets about:

Stodmarsh NNR

, , , ...

On Sunday I visited Stodmarsh NNR. Soon after we started walking I heard the call of a turtle dove. We walk around trying to see it and there at the top of a tall tree we saw it! At one point I was standing below it and even managed to photograph it, albeit poorly:

DId some more volunteering up at bedfords today and had my first visit with decent weather for a while. Unfortunately the swarms of dragonflies and damselflies had still failed to materalise and may not at all this year. On the upside I did get my first small red-eyed damselfly of the year
