Regents park THE place for wildlife in London

, , , ...

Whenever I look at lists of places to see birds and other wildlife in London, the Royal Parks of St. James Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens make the list, along with places like the London Wildlife Trust’s Camley Street, but what is probably the best site of all seems to be inexplicably missed out: Regents Park. In fact in a recent article on the top places to see birds in London in BBC Wildlife Magazine (August issue Pg.80) by the Urban Birder himself, David Lindo, completely ignored its existence!
I’ve never understood why this is. Based purely on the numbers game, Regents Park has over 200 recorded species, where as (to my knowledge at least) no other site in London has reached 200 species. Combine this with the 45 annually breeding species that’s quite an impressive list.
The breeding species themselves include kestrels

Carrying on from my last post, where I had just reached the actually RSPB reserve. We checked out most the hides and saw very little, nothing close enough to photograph. So we then head to far hide that was a fair old distance away. When we arrived we looked out over Windmill creek and there was a flock of Knots nearby

Foggy morning

On Friday morning, I had a foggy start, and most of the wildlife was either out of sight in the fog or waiting for the sun to burn through. There were plenty of spiderwebs highlighted by the low sun and dew that had condensed on their threads

Waders and a young rabbit

On Monday, with the forecast clear skies I headed in for a 'dawn raid' to Wat Tyler CP. The tide was still in quite a way, but receading. Down at the second bird screen the sun was just creeping high enough to light the far side of the creek, where a heron was standing in the morning sunlight

More Wat Tyler goodness

Can you tell Im running out of titiles for posts on Wat Tyler Country Park. These photos are from Friday. On getting out the car, the sun had yet to make a full appearance, hiding behind the cloud as it rose. These geese passed over head and I had to rush for the cameraIm fairly sure they were greylags, judging by the noise they were making

Two great BBC wildlife video links

, , ,

Ill get back to proper posting soon, but I had to post this following clip after laughing my head off watching it on TV on Sunday. Its from the series 'last chance to See' which is a wildlife series seeing how some endanger species are faring. This episode was about the Kakapo - the worlds largest and rarest parrot, with a hand reared on featuring in the clip and, well, hand rearing has its consequences!

Dragonfly close ups

, , , ...

A couple of weeks back on a sunny lunch time walk, we came across an area of hawthorn (not far from 'weasel alley' where I photographed the weasel in the last post) that had become a sun trap and was teeming with common darters and migrant hawkers. One common darter was defending his bench from intrudersHe was so obsessed with this bench, when he landed in a bad spot I gave him a gentle nudge and he refused to budge!
