Exploring the fauna of Britain

My first reptiles of the year: at riverside CP

, , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Today it was cloudy. Then it started to rain. But I tried looking for reptiles at a locality I know, with out much hope. And yet, under some roofing felt I found this guy (and a friend)

And under a piece of corrugated iron I found this (common?) shrew

Also about on the sea front at Riverside country park, Kent, where some teal and some pintails, heres one of the males
Also some bar tailed godwits
And to finish off how about this image: I turned over a rock to see what would have to be a gardeners worst nightmare, if it was in his garden of course!

:hat: Most cool! One of my uni friends has got involved in reptile conservation since she graduated and whenever we go out for a walk, she's always turning over any corragated iron she finds to see what's underneath!

Sadly reptiles are pretty rare in my locality now :frown: I think the vast number of free-ranging cats here is the principle cause. I know of a few people with reptiles in their gardens, but the last one I saw was a lizard scurrying across a park.

@ cakkleberrylane. thanks, the weather was awful so I was using the flash in the middle of the day, just o get them to come out! so I was rather pleased ow well they did come out

@sitting fox. Cats are a big problem. In an article on tetrapod zoology (see my links) darrens subtracts the number of slowworms killed a year from the total population and it works out to be a third! But if if cat owners don't care about birds, there unlikely to care about reptiles :frown:

On the upside it good to hear of someone else interested in their conservation

Yes, she's in the Philippines right now studying flying lizards! She has a blog about her rescued iguana on here, although obviously she's not posting right now, being that she's in the jungle...

Worrying statistic about slow worms.
