Nightingale, cuckoo, avocet and others on two tree island

Last Friday my Thames tour started at Two Tree Island, Essex. The first thing of note was this chaffinch singing on top of a bush.

In the creek on the north west side of the island an avocet was wandering.

Walking along the path we came across a tent of some caterpillars.

The west side of the island was packed with dog walkers, none of whom had dogs on leads and I saw one dog run across a skylark nest. The owner new something was a miss as she quickly walked past us and let her dog standing in the field as she disappeared with her dog....rolleyes

Anyway, we abandoned exploring the west side and headsed to the east side where dog owners are asked to keep dogs on leads. Few do of course but the denser vegetation and the fact less dog owners seem to be on that side meant wildlife was for more abundant, as shown by the 3 cuckoos we saw soon after entering the east side. I got one male distantly in a tree.

Whitethroats were everywhere and I got this from one of the hides.

But the highlight was a nightingale singing on top of a tree, out in the open (if a bit far off).

Rare for that one to come out so far in the open! Lovely to hear.
