RSPB Bempton Cliffs - gannets

On the way abck from Northumberlnad we popped into RSPB Bempton Cliffs, probably the best gannet colony on the UK mainland. from some spots the gannets will fly past literally metres from you.

There were juveniles about as well as adults. immature gannet

The gannets are flying around, often looking for somewhere to land.

They often have to abort and fly round for another go.

Some are just landing for a rest.

Some were collecting nesting material

Most were nesting on rocky cliff ledges.

Many were on a rocky outcrop near the south end of the reserve. You can see the grey chicks on some nests.

Some of these gannets were fighting.

I'll finish by saying that gannets are one of those birds that have to be seen. Large but flying effortlessly, they are quite a sight, especially in numbers.
