Heronry report 6: including coot fighting photos

But this wasn't the most interesting thing going on...
Far more distracting were the coots. There were fights breaking out left right and centre. One fight went on for atleast 10mins with one participant 'tagging' in there partner. Here are a few of the photos I took. you can see the fighters partner(s) in the back/foreground of some:

Note the partner getting involved in these two shots:

Going back to the herons, here is one coming into land on its nest:

I headed down to the 'feeding area' and there wernt many herons about thanks mainly to these folks (obvioulsy they can't read )
The herons are tame, but dont like to be approached, and they certainly are not used to people crossin the fence.Thankfully a few had not moved too far and one posed nicely in the evening sun
and this one was just ignoring the gulls
. There was a Herring gull hanging around too
Going back to the heronry there were also a few birds around and on the island. There were a few pochards about, some of which looked lovely in the light

This great crested grebe was hunting

And there was an egyptian goose on the island

To finish off we visited the wildfowl collection at the back of the lake to see this view of more than a hundred ducks
including this female goldeneye
more articles soon
People climbing over fences - that brings back too many bad memories. In Jasper I had tourists actually leaping over three foot all fences that where there to prevent trampling of vulnerable habitats, and trying to get as close as possible to mountain goats. One group nearly chased the goats into the road in front of some oncoming traffic. Jasper in summer is great madness, especially if any bears are visible
