Water scorpions and red deer calfs

, , , , , , , , ,

Just a quick post with what I saw today when helping out with an education group. Pond dipping was first up and it wasn't long before one of the little ones got something exciting:A water scorpion

This frog tadpole, larger than any frog tadpole was also caught. Im not certain it is a common frog due to its size but I guess we'll see what the experts think.

Later I found this common toad

And In the last week the first red deer calfs have been born :smile:Not the best photo but Ill be back after my holiday to take more, hopefully in the sun!

last up is this great tit eating seed at the feer - it was especially popular in the bad weather

Off to Minsmere tommorow so hopefully will have lots to talk about!

WOW!! Awesome photos. I love the pictures of birds with a little seed in their beaks!

Woot, Minsmere! (I lived in Lowestoft for a while and took many opportunities to get down there - try driving up the entrance road to the Minsmere gate after dark if you want to see some wild red deer.)

Great shot of the great tit but the water scorpion is special!

Nice set. The water scorpion is cool! As for the tadpole, I wonder if it is one of last year's that managed to over-winter but hasn't metamorphosed. We had a whopper in our pond last November. I've not seen it since, but I doubt it was ever going to make it to frogdom.

@ Words: that something I kind of thought of but its just seemed big - but thinking about it its probably the best explanation. The weird thing is in all of last year for sure, no frog tadpoles where caught or seen in the park!?

@ cakkleberry - thanks once again - they do look cute and pose quite nicely

@ sittingfox - I kept my eye out for deer as we left, with no luck - but I did see something good! ANd the water scorpion was a first for me (except one I saw in a display once). We caught 3 that day and the first recorded was one the week before, so I think there here and here to stay - perhaps not good news for the newts and there tadpoles!
