Rainham marshes

The day started well, with the first of a number of these caterpillers (redd something or other moths, I cant remember or find out!)
Then I saw a single migrant hawker land for the first time this year

furtehr round a common darter and another of the caterpillers were sitting close to each other

There were a number of marsh frogs about including these youngsters

and this big'un

And this sawfly(?) was perched on a fence

I also managed a half decent egret take of shot

And only the way to the centre a large 'bird' spooked the birds off the ground

We sat for lunch in the centre when a loud a and familar sound wizzed over head. I with every other man there rushed out, they knew what it was and I was trying to figure it and worked it out when someone said "I love that sound": a spitfire. And it was flying low doing aerobatics

A nice bonus for the day. But the best was to come...Last time I came I saw lots of water voles, but the vegetation had grown so much I lost any hope of showing Sue them in the flesh. But since I last came they have put in a platform, which I noticed was cover in droppings. We popped down for another look there and they had put fruit down, which had attracted them and there was three in the area at one point! I got a few photos

Then as another man approached (quietly to his credit) the one remaining slipped off, so we both checked the otehr side of the bridge, where he said "hey is that a snake?" and a grass snake slither out of the reeds into the water under the bridge and past the platform where the voles were re-emerging.

Dont get much better than that!

The egret photo could have been one of my best, but looks rubbish if its any bigger unfortunately - I need a new camera lol
@ cakkleberry - was a good day, I seem to have saved all my goof wildlife sightings for the last few weeks of 'summer'
