Kestrel mobbed by jackdaw

, , , , , , , ,

After the last post on a buzzard being mobbed, here is another bird or prey that didn't fair much better. This kestrel was happily hovering away, not far from where I was standing.

Until a jackdaw took notice and started to pursue the kestrel

And it got pretty close at times

The kestrel then decided to leave and try else where, not surprisingly. Which left me with just this other corvid, a carrion crow, to photograph nearby

Nice shot of the kestrel hovering, and mobbing sequences are always great to see. I don't often see kestrels getting this treatment when they're hunting. More often it's when they are gliding overhead.

I think the jackdaw was having some raptor ID problems! Surely it ought to be able to tell the difference between a sparrowhawk and a kestrel. Though, I've seen them chasing grey herons before now, so maybe not!

Thanks folks.

@adele - I did wonder why the jackdaws harassed it, but then again kestrel will take birds (or at least try) when hungry or decent opportunity arises.
