Wicken Fen - Orchids and other Flowers

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

On Saturday I went to Wicken Fen, which is where the photograph from my last 'guess the plant post' was taken. The answer is an early marsh orchid

I also got a common spotted orchid

And another marsh orchid. I think this is a souther marsh orchid, but it may just be a colour variant of the early marsh orchid

There was plenty of ragged robin

There also some yellow rattle

Some charlock

Bugle

Common comfrey

and some Bittersweet

Quite the flower garden! The bittersweet is beautiful. I should have looked for flowers more when I lived in East Anglia, but all I can remember now is that weird soldier plant that moves up and down the water column in the dykes!

All are beautiful. I have read about ragged robin but never seen. The only one I am familiar with is the Bugle weed and the Comfrey.

thanks guys. The massive reed bed has some great flowers hidden away - well I say hidden, most of these had big signs pointing out what they are (hence they are named, as Im useless at Id-ing plants!)

Gillian writes: having seen your name quote Bittersweet--I disagree I think it is Deadly Nightshade-Bella donna- highly poisonous!!!!

@gillian - Im not sure as the sign next to the plant on the reserve said bittersweet so I went with that!

Camilo writes: Go with Bittersweet (Solanum dulcamara). It's also poisonous! Deadly nightshade (Atropa bella-donna) is also in the potato (Solanaceae) family, but is entirely different.
