About me
I'm too much a diverse and complex person to sum myself up in a brief profile, so I'll concentrate on telling you a little about some of my interests and why I created these pages on Opera.I've always had a deep and abiding love for the natural world and the plants and animals with which we share it. I was born and raised in a city but moved to the far south coast of New South Wales in my mid-teens and settled in a quiet fishing town. This was a time when I really came to learn to respect the environment and my curiosity to learn about nature really began. I've not done any formal study of any of the natural sciences apart from a little horticulture and my (limited) knowledge comes from reading widely on a range of topics, speaking with and listening to people with experience of the subject; and lot's of trial and error and learning from mistakes. Most of my personal interests and much of the work I've done over the years has taken place outdoors and brought me into direct contact with many facets nature. This has allowed me to make my own observations of a broad range of subjects to add to what I learn in other ways.
Another interest I have that is relevant here is digital photography, a hobby I took up early in 2007. Most of my photographs are nature based and I've found the camera an invaluable tool when it come to studying nature. Having plenty of images is a great aid when it comes to identifying a plant or animal and macro photography is brilliant at allowing you to see details that would otherwise be missed. I only have the one camera, the first digital I've bought, it's a Canon A630 8 Mp compact digital. I've no complaints with this camera and have found it pretty easy to learn to operate, it's served my needs well so far and I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend one.I also plan to buy a DSLR in the future, once my capabilities can justify the purchase.
Besides enjoying nature and the outdoors, I also enjoy messing with computers and doing a bit of website design. I'm new to this too, I'm still working on my first site which I hope to have hosted somewhere fairly soon.
These three interests led me to creating this page on Opera for several reasons. I'm keen to learn more about the region I live in and I figure I'll learn a lot through researching and writing my posts. It's a way I can easily document my studies and observations
for future reference and there is always the hope that something of what I record here proves informative and useful to others
