Arggh!

I just got addicted to that $#%&ing SimAquarium widget.

It's fun enough that it is completely addictive, but under the hood it sucks! It's slow, it hangs, and the model is simplistic. There has to be a memory leak or something like that in it.

I'm starting to work on a fix for it (in my limited spare time). I think the first thing I will fix is to add a save button to mitigate the losses caused by it crashing every 5 minutes or so.

Keep checking back for updates. Hopefully soon there will be a SimAquarium that actually works.

Free Web Hosting!

What a promise.

I develop a lot of websites just as a hobby (translation: I don't get paid for those ones) and I try to use free web hosting for them because I am too cheap to pay for something that probably will not make a profit. There are a lot of ads for free hosting out there, some are good - most are not.

Until this week, I have been using www.aspspider.net for hosting. This was a great deal, in exchange for free ASP.NET web hosting, you have to post in the forums a certain number of times a month answering questions or writing tutorials. I not only got my hosting for free, but I learned a lot in those forums.

I just logged in and was told the site would disappear on May 1 2008.

Now for the mad scramble to try to find a new host. As usual, my first step in research is to google the subject, so I searched
free web hosting
. I got the usual mixture of bad links, toplists - a pet peeve of mine, and a couple of real hits. About 2 hours of frustration following links to all of the wrong sites, I thought I had found one - Bravenet, but then I uploaded all of my XHTML 1.0 Strict validated pages, went to visit the site, and found that the advertisement markup that they add to my pages contain on average 86 errors! 86! I took the time to make sure that my pages are perfect and now I can't even use the w3c icon because of the lamea## host and their lazy HTML practices.

Not gonna work, had to delete all of my files.

So another couple of hours of searching. Finally found a site, x10 Hosting that doesn't screw up my code. They have three levels of free hosting plus paid, and offer an amazing amount of tools for a free site.

You can visit my latest project at vantek.exofire.net.

Feel free to post if you know any other good free sites.

Hello, World!

Greeting from Denver, CO!

This is my first post so I guess I'll explain what I am going to be talking about. Some tags you might see on this blog include:

  • Role-playing games (mostly Dungeons & Dragons and D20 Modern).
  • Website development
  • Software development
  • Politics
  • Science
  • Atheism
  • My insanity

I'm writing this at about 08:30 after being up all night working on a JavaXcript reference/tutorial website. It's still in its early development, so I don't even have it up on a host just yet. Even though this is going to be implemented with just JavaScript DHTML, I still think that the Visual Studio Express Editions are the best tool out there for creating a site. Even though I am not using .NET, ASP.NET, or anything like that, it just works better.

I have sort of a love/hate relationship with Microsoft (creators of Visual Studio), on the one hand they create some really good programming tools (the best in my opinion), on the other hand they refuse to conform to standards in their languages. Case in point is JScript , which mostly conforms the the ECMA 262 standards, but it differs on enough key points that if you want to support IE with the 'extra' features that Microsoft put into their version of the language (JavaScript), you have to write something completely different for the (web-standards compliant) browsers that are also in use.

My suggestion is that Everybody should stop using IE until they completely standardize it!

That's enough for now, I'll be back after I've had some sleep.
