***These were Father’s entrances and exits. Like Santa Claus he came and went mysteriously.
*** I called them Mrs. Left and Mrs. Right – and invented dramatic situations for them in which they discussed the problems of the day. At least Mrs. Right did; she was very demonstrative, but I hadn’t the same control of Mrs. Left, so she mostly contented herself with nodding agreement.
sensitive
***The irony of it! That very day when he came in to dinner he took off his boots and put on his slippers, donned the dirty old cap he wore about the house to save him from colds, crossed his legs, and began to talk gravely to Mother, who looked anxious. Naturally, I disliked her looking anxious, because it destroyed her good looks, so I interrupted him.
***It was clear that she either genuinely liked talking to Father better than talking to me, or else that he had some terrible hold on her which made her afraid to admit the truth.
"Mummy," I said that night when she was tucking me up, "do you think if I prayed hard God would send Daddy back to the war?"
***
selfish
****Man for man, I was prepared to compete with him any time for Mother’s attention, but when he had it all made up for him by other people it left me no chance. Several times I tried to change the subject without success.
****And calamity it was! Sonny arrived in the most appalling hulla-baloo – even that much he couldn’t do without a fuss – and from the first moment I disliked him. He was a difficult child – so far as I was concerned he was always difficult – and demanded far too much attention. Mother was simply silly about him, and couldn’t see when he was only showing off. As company he was worse than useless. He slept all day, and I had to go round the house on tiptoe to avoid waking him. It wasn’t any longer a question of not waking Father. The slogan now was "Don’t-wake-Sonny!" I couldn’t understand why the child wouldn’t sleep at the proper time, so whenever Mother’s back was turned I woke him. Sometimes to keep him awake I pinched him as well. Mother caught me at it one day and gave me a most unmerciful flaking.

James [Jim] Dillingham Young and his wife Della are a young couple who are very much in love with each other, but can barely afford their one-room apartment due to their very bad economic situation. For Christmas, Della decides to buy Jim a fob which costs $21.00 for his prized pocket watch given to him by his father's father. To raise the funds, she has her long, beautiful hair cut off and sold to make a wig. Meanwhile, Jim decides to sell his watch to buy Della a beautiful set of combs made out of tortoiseshell and jewels for her lovely, knee-length brown hair. Although each is disappointed to find the gift they chose rendered useless, each is pleased with the gift they received, because it represents their love for one another.
The story ends with the narrator comparing the pair's mutually sacrificial gifts of love with those of the Biblical Magi:
The magi, as you know, were wise men – wonderfully wise men – who brought gifts to the new-born King of the Jews in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication. And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi.

****Oh, and the next two hours tripped by on rosy wings. Forget the hashed metaphor. She was ransacking the stores for Jim's present.
***At 7 o'clock the coffee was made and the frying-pan was on the back of the stove hot and ready to cook the chops.
think about jim
###Something fine and rare and sterling--something just a little bit near to being worthy of the honor of being owned by Jim.
###It was even worthy of The Watch. As soon as she saw it she knew that it must be Jim's. It was like him. Quietness and value--the description applied to both.
devotion
-don't care about daily need
***On went her old brown jacket; on went her old brown hat. With a whirl of skirts and with the brilliant sparkle still in her eyes, she fluttered out the door and down the stairs to the street.
***For there lay The Combs--the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped long in a Broadway window. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jewelled rims--just the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair. They were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart had simply craved and yearned over them without the least hope of possession. And now, they were hers, but the tresses that should have adorned the coveted adornments were gone
-accept to lose face to save money
One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one's cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty- seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas.

the gift of the magi
I. Summary:
The Gift of the Magi is the story of Mr. and Mrs. James Dillingham Young, who are known as Jim and Della. Della and Jim are a very poor couple with $20 a week. Della has brought herself down by bargaining at the shops and managed to scrimp away 60 cents of the $1.87 in pennies. The next day will be Christmas and Della tries to determine how to buy Jim a worthy gift. She lets down her glorious hair; hair that is the pride and happiness of both Della and Jim. Quickly, Della leaves the house and sells her hair to Mrs. Sofronie for $20. Then she races around town looking for the perfect gift. She finds it in a platinum watch chain. She hurries home and suddenly realizes what she has done. Della prepares supper and tries to fix her hair in order that Jim will not be too upset by her appearance. When Jim comes home, his response is none of the responses. He seems dumbstruck but Della cannot know why. Finally, after assuring her that he loves her no matter what, Jim gives her the gift he bought for her. It is a pair of tortoise shell combs that Della had worshipped. Della is thrilled but her joy is quickly followed by sorrow as she realizes she has no hair to wear the combs in. She resolves her feelings by telling Jim that her hair grows fast.Suddenly, Della remembers her gift to Jim, which she quickly presents to him. It is responsed by a smile. Meanwhile, Jim tells Della that he sold the watch to buy the combs and that they should put their gifts up and save them for a later time. The story ends with the author comparing the pair's sacrificial gifts of love with those of the Magi.
II. Analyse: the love and devotion of Della:
*Introduction:
The story “The gift of the Magi” by O. Henry is a great story about love. After reading the story, I feel moved and strongly impressed by one of the two main characters: Della. She possesses two important qualities, namely love and devotion.
*Body:
-Love:
+The living condition:
O.Henry was particularly successful in creating the main character Della that could fill definitions of love. The story begins by immediately focusing on upon money with the first sentence being, “One dollar and eighty seven cents.” It is a small amount of money and it makes us think about a poor life of the couple. Della lives with her husband Jim in “a furnished flat at $8 per week”, “the shabby little couch and howl”. O. Henry goes on to describe smaller details, such as a “letter-box into which no letter would go, and an electric button from which no mortal finger could coax a ring”. These descriptions showcase the social status of the Jim and Della. They are so low on the food chain that they get no mail, and most likely receive very few guests. But even with a lack of material possessions, she does not seem to pity herself for having to live under such conditions.
+The way Della treats and thinks about Jim:
Every day Della is waiting at home to meet Jim: “whenever Mr James Dillingham Young came home and reached his flat above, he was called “Jim” and greatly hugged by Mrs Dillingham Young.” But O. Henry makes Delia’s happiness in her love for Jim quite clear: “Many a happy hour she had spent planning for something nice for him. Something fine, rare and sterling - something just a little bit near to being worthy of the honour of being owned by Jim.”
After cutting off the hair, she worries that Jim might no longer find her beautiful. “She whispered: “Please, God, make him think i’m still pretty”. This detail shows how sensitive and womanly she is. When Jim arrives and appears stunned by her appearance, Delia reminds him that her hair grows quickly and that she loves him: “May be the hair of my head were numbered, but nobody could ever count my love for you”.This sentence as a declaration of love and makes readers strongly impressive.
-Devotion:
Another quality of Della is the devotion.Della is a pretty, slender young woman. She doesn’t care about her daily needs to save the money. She is an ordinary woman as all the others, so she is also wants the new clothes, the cosmetics and jewels to make her more beautiful. But she doesn’t spend the little money of herself on them. She just looks on them: “She had worshipped the combs for long in a Broadway window”. And the daily costume of her is “old brown jacket, old brown hat with a whirl of skirts”.
Further more, Della works very hard to save money for daily life. She tries to find cheap goods to buy, “by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher”. She knows that her husband is very hard to earn money, so she uses them reasonably. “She had been saving every penny she could for months, with this result. Twenty dollars a week doesn’t go far.”. The next day is Christmas and she has only $1. 87 to but a present for Jim. The love of her now becomes the devotion when she is willing to sell her best possession - the long hair to buy for Jim a watch chain. Her love is so strong that her possession doesn’t mean as much as giving the husband joy. We can see that they understand each other, they love and devote for each other, it is a gift greater than any object
*Conclusion:
hope
I. Summary:
“Hope” by John Galsworthy tells about a poor old man who struggled to survive his life despite all the misery and bad luck that he had to suffer. he used to be a fisherman but after an accident, his leg had shrunk and being now two inches shorter than it should have been. Then he had to be far away the sea, go to London and lived with his wife. Everyday, he got up at 5 o’clock, went out of London by an early tram to the happy hunting grounds to got groundsel. Then he returned to London, stood on the pavement to sell groundsels. He earned a little money for his life with the wife. He returned home at 9 or 10 o’clock at night. And day by day, his life continued that way, again and again.
II. The man is responsible and full of love of life:
*Responsible:
After having an accident with the leg, the man returned and found a job to support himself : “now he made his living by standing on the pavement at a certain spot, in Bayswater, from 10 o’clock to 7 in the evening. In his basket, covered by a bit of sacking, was groundsels, and rarely, a few mushrooms, kept carefully in a piece of newspaper”. He thought that he was having “a job”, despite in other people’s eyes, it wasn’t a job in true meaning. He was very responsible with his “job”: “rising at 5 o’clock, and going out of Longdon by an early tram to the happy hunting grounds. This “job” was very hard but he didn’t complain and always feel comfortable with it. Ha was also responsible with his wife. With a pain leg, he still earned money for the life of them.
*Full of love of life:
Further more, we can see the love of life from this man. Although the poor man had a miserable life, he always believed in life and satisfied with it. The thought “Why do I continue living” never came to him. It was a secret joy to measure himself against troubles, to make him believe in a better life.l earned money for the life of them, for his wife’s gouty rheumatism.
my oedipus complex
I. Summary:
“My oedipus complex” is the story of a young boy named Larry who is forced to confront issues of jealously and confusion. In the beginning, the young boy displays signs of excitement and satisfaction when his father arrives unexpectedly from the War. Larry lacked friends his age because the only person he spent time with was his mother. The day his father became home from the war everything changed for Larry. He finds his father less interesting when he arrives home: isn’t wearing his uniform, does not have any souvenirs from the war. It’s at the point where the competition for attention begins. This is the first time without having the full attention of his mother and he feels neglected. He does not realize that his father is having a hard time to find a job to support the family. Larry constantly waking his father up and fighting with him. He even believes that he will end up marrying his mother. However, soon after his father returned from the war, a new son is born into the family. Larry changes his focus from his father to his new brother, Sonny. He now had to compete with his younger brother for his mother;s attention. The birth of this baby brings him closer to the man he “hated” for so long. Then they live in peace.
II. Analyse Larry:
My Oedipus complex was an attractive short story by Frank O’Connor. This story, as its own unique title, was about the complicated feelings of Larry – the main character and his parents from beginning of the First World War until it ended. The war was the most peaceful period of the boy’s life but everything became complex right after its end and father returned.
The five years old boy named Larry in the short story was described as not only a clever, sensitive, imaginative but also selfish and stubborn boy. Two good and bad characteristics mixed together perfectly, making a very interested character for the story. Frank O’Connor described Larry as a clever and sensitive boy in case of recognizing his mother anxious. Larry could realize changes on his mother’s face; he disliked his mother looking anxious because it destroyed her good looks. Moreover, he was an imaginative boy. He showed the mother his wish that he would marry her when he grew up.
However, Larry’s bad characteristics, described as selfish and stubborn, were also showed when his father returned from Front. At that time, Larry felt that he couldn’t get as much love and attention from his mother as before. He even blamed God for bringing father back home and wished God would create another war, take his father away. Another bad characteristic, his stubbornness, was described when Larry bawled as what his father said “Shut up, you” and “Smack your own! Shut up! Shut up”. Larry became a selfish and stubborn boy because of the ways of teaching children from his mother.

I walk the maze of moments
But everywhere i turn to
Begins a new beginning
But never find a finish
I walk to the horizon
and there i find another
It all seem so surprising
And then i find that I know
You go there you're gone forever
I go there I'll lose my way
If we stay here were not together
Anywhere is....
Happy birthday anyway
