This image was taken by amateur astronomer Efrain Morales Rivera of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, who has been monitoring Saturn and he created this composite image to show how the geometry has changed, and the article regarding this has been hosted at the NASA website.
The image in the top left is the most recent telescopic view of saturn, and this christmas, when saturn is viewed through the telescope, all the skygazers, can see the ring edge-on as the rings tilt angle is only 0.8 degrees,and we can see the rings cutting the planet into two. Astronomers call the phenomenon a "ring plane crossing." As Saturn goes around the sun, it periodically (once every 14 to 15 years) turns its rings edge-on to Earth. Because the rings are so thin, they can actually disappear when viewed through a backyard telescope. At the precise moment of crossing, Saturn undergoes a startling metamorphosis. The ringed planet becomes a lonely ball of gas, almost unrecognizable. But, this wont occur until September 2009, and after this, the next one which is clearly visible occurs only in 2038, though this phenomenon occurs every 15 years, as Saturn will be close to the sun and will be difficult to spot in the glare.
