In order to solve the urban problems by relieving congestion and overcrowding and to ensure sustainable development, it is necessary to build more efficient transport systems. The mass transit networks will be a solution for urban areas, which shall incorporate the new underground metro systems (subway). Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is implementing their first metro systems as such.

The Vietnamese engineers have gained fairly extensive degree of expertise in
conventional tunnelling over the past decades. But the experience in mechanized tunnelling, particularly in urban areas, is not yet equivalent.
To date, only one Double Shield TBM (Italian SELI Mod. 0548-106) has been used for the excavation of a head race tunnel of the Dai Ninh hydropower project (tunnel length is 7.800 meters, excavation diameter is 5.48 m, driven through sandstone and rhyolite geology, period 2004-2006).
Doc Xay Tunnel

Núi Dốc Xây thuộc dãy Tam Điệp, ngăn cách thị xã Tam Điệp (Ninh Bình) và huyện Hà Trung của Thanh Hóa. Hầm có lý trình khoảng Km 285, chiều dài 150m. Thiết kế và thi công trong giai đoạn 1995 - 1997 theo phương pháp mỏ truyền thống, vỏ hầm bằng BTCT khá dày; nhưng sau đó xảy ra hiện tượng nứt khá nặng và đã phải tiến hành xử lý.
Doc Xay mountain belongs to the Tam Diep mountain range, separating the Tam Diep Town (Ninh Binh province) and Ha Trung District of Thanh Hoa province. Doc Xay tunnel is located on the National Highway No.1A with a length of approx. 150 m. It was built during 1995-97 by conventional method, with a rather thick reinforced concrete lining; however, this lining sufferred heavy cracking and has been repaired.
