The Saga of World Subsurface Planning Is Inspiring Vietnam

TOWARD AN IMPROVED USE OF UNDERGROUND SPACE

Hanoi Metro System - Progress of Second Line

The Urban Mass Rail Transit No. 2 (UMRT-2) Line* consists of 15 km underground section partly passing beneath the ancient urban quarter. The TBM application option is being given the special consideration. TBM technology can be either Slurry or Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines.

This kind of metro project is executed for the first time in Vietnam.

The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) Mission visited Vietnam from March 7 to 9, 2007 and had discussions on the draft Implementation Program of JBIC Special Assistance for Project Formation (SAPROF) for Hanoi City Urban Railway Construction Project (Line 2) with officials of Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) and Hanoi People’s Committee (HPC). Then, in June 2007 a SAPROF Team arrives in Hanoi for their studies.

All the involved parties (i.e. Owner, Consultant, Contractor, and other stakeholders) will need to join their hands to make this metro pilot line project successful. The Project Owner (i.e. HRB) is steadily improving its capacity to efficiently manage these two challenging projects, that in a near future will actively serve for the benefit of the people of Hanoi City.
