My Opera Speed Dial

, , , ,

Recently I entered the Speed Dial Contest with my current speed dial, as I had no time on my hands. Now that the competition is over, I decided to polish it up a bit p This is how it looks at the moment wink

Update: 07/05/2010, as of today, snapshot builds of 10.54 have been tweaked, and rendering of thumbnails has previously been much improved. Unfortunately you may have to redo your thumbnails, making sure they are 256×192 (to stop them being stretched). Incidentally, this is how my speed dial currently looks.

The thumbnails I used can be downloaded here (.zip) Updated for 10.54, and the background image can be found here. I'm happy enough with how it's looking smile

If you want to do this yourself, you'll need Opera 10. To have a transparent thumbnail background you will need a skin with one (for example Speed Dial - Clear which I'm using). Then follow Tamil's tutorial on how to change speed dial thumbnails. The Opera Image Dial Generator is a great tool to generate your own thumbnails.

Thanks MyOpera for a great contest! up Looking forward to the next one as always!

Great speeddial. Mine is not that great but following the Tami'ls tutorial I came upon a little problem. How do I remove the white square when the dial is selected? (see pic below) It's something on the skin but I can't figure out. I want to emulate the same effect of the Opera Turbo 10 speed dial on others skins.

In skin.ini, this info is held in
[Thumbnail Image Skin.hover]
Color= #ffffff
You can either change the hex code, or delete the entire 'color= #ffffff' line to eliminate this hover effect.

We should probably be changing [Speed Dial Thumbnail Image Skin] instead, but this is easier, and I haven't noticed any side effects wink

Thanks. I've copied the lines from the Opera Turbo 10 skin to the default skin. That's how it looks now:

You shouldn't really do this... Only include changes, and then put the changed zip file in the folder
%AppData%\Opera\Opera Beta\skin
For example, see the skin I use (I don't know how I messed up the tab bar thumbnails :| )

This way the skin inherits the style of the default skin, and won't be overwritten on updates wink

Hélder Matosyamato74 Monday, August 24, 2009 9:22:02 PM

Yep, I just copied some lines from the other skin (with the files required) and renamed it.

yamato! you mind releaseing your skin? p

WOFall Sunday, August 30, 2009 8:38:23 PM

I've now uploaded the skin I use. It gets rid of the numbering, and sets a transparent thumbnail background, and it also has a hover effect smile

My upload speed is good & my d/l speed is higher than what it should be. I just d/l opera, but not the opera10. I am constantly getting refresh page when I'm in Tagged. Hope this works for me, as I enjoy the pet runs, but can never get in them, as I seem to be lagging somehow. Any suggestions would be appreciated~

Thanks, I like being able to customize the speed dial thumbnails.

The skin I linked to should remove the numbering as well as giving transparent thumbnail backgrounds, I just never updated the screenshot...

Hello, WOFall!
Thanks a lot for these really cool thumbnails or yours! =)

However, I have a question about this "Opera Image Dial Generator". Okay, I have chosen a picture, customized the width and background, now I press the button "Generate"... and get some strange numbers and symbols called "result URI." I know I am a total newbie in this stuff, so would you mind explaining me what to do with this URI, where to copy-paste it and so on?

Many thanks in advance,
vovazl

Speed Dial Search Type = 0

The long way is to right click the search field, 'Manage Search Engines...', and edit Ask so that it's not the default for Speed Dial search.

Right click on a speed dial thumbnail, 'edit', and paste the 'result uri' into the space for the address at the bottom.

Yes that we need more speed dial boxes, smaller and with logo only then i can abandon Personal bar and i like to have this as default options. Maxthon will be using this http://files.myopera.com/italianjob44/blog/maxthon-asdf.jpg

WOFall you should have shared final images ready to be used as speed dials. but you shared raw images.

The names of the images are different for each person, as far as I can tell. I could give a set of uri links, but it wouldn't be ideal. Unfortunately it just takes some work to change the thumbnails.

i thinkg it's not impossible to post, ready to use, standard 256x192 pixels pics.

But when I cleaned my computer I lost al the logo's, so I began to 'rebuilt' my speed dial. The problem is that I used to make the logo's smaller, because that nicer. But when I tried to make these logo's smaller (just by chancing the size to 100x100 pixels) the logo's look vague (see logo number 10 in my speeddial!). I want to have the logo's the same as the t-mobile logo in my speeddial (sharp and clear). Al the logo's have a resolution above 400x400 and look very sharp if you open them in a pictureviewer (so that isn't the problem...) I think that opera automatically spreads the logo over the square, so that less pixels are spread over the square. I hope you know the answer! (Sorry for my bad english). My opera speeddial:

Yes, that's exactly the problem. Opera now stretches the images instead of just centering them. From the post:

This makes things a little harder, but it should work just fine once you get it right wink

And probably not worth the time either. Opera 11.10 changes how thumbnails are generated though, so there's hope for improvement. For instance, websites can specify a thumbnail to use.
