Thoughts that cross my mind....

How safe are we??

Today is “Blog Action Day”, and this year’s topic is “CLIMATE CHANGE”. Well frankly speaking I don’t have much information regarding it but still I’d like to share whatever I know about it.
Few days ago, I had a dream early in the morning. I dreamed that the whole of Russia had disappeared under water. It was in the news that Russia had drowned because of the rising sea levels due to global warming. When I saw the news I was like “this can’t be true!!”….cause “I have a friend in Russia who’s studying Medicine and I interact with her almost daily on the internet”. I thought, “How can this be? Just yesterday I chatted with her.” Then I decided that I would call her up and check for myself whether the news was true or not. And then somebody said that “some people are trying to keep this a secret and that someone was controlling the net…just to keep people from knowing the truth that “Russia no more exists”. I was still wondering “no…this cant be true”, when I woke up from my sleep with a sigh of relief. All this must’ve been the impact of the various movies that I watched recently. But I still shudder at the thought of waking up one day to find that my dreams have come true. Some people say that early morning dreams come true. Maybe its true cause many of my dreams came true and specially the bad ones.
The other day I dreamed that my younger brother and I got lost in some sinister place. And as we were trying to find our way back to where our parents were, we were chased by a huge body of water which suddenly came out of the mountainside. We escaped being washed away by holding onto the branch of a nearby tree.
As I ponder upon why I’m having such kind of dreams, I realize that maybe it just wants to warn me of the dangers of climate changes. Just like I always have some kind of intuition about the bad things that’s going to happen to me. So here I am talking about whatever little that I know about climate changes.
First of all I’d like to talk about the rising sea level. I’ve read somewhere that the sea levels are rising at a very fast rate due to the effects of global warming like melting of glaciers and expansion of warmer sea waters. Now why do we have to be concerned about the rising sea levels?? But have you thought about what would happen to those people who live in low lying areas?? Where will they go if their place were to get drowned? Maybe those who can migrate to other areas will migrate to a safer place. Those who cannot might just await their death helpless as they are. Imagine how you feel if you were helpless awaiting your own death.
But when these the low lying areas have been washed away, the places which were a little higher up will become low lying areas and so on and so forth. And if the sea levels continue to rise at this rate, a time will come when no life is left on earth.
Next I’d like to talk about the disappearing flora and fauna from the earth. Very often we hear about the endangered species of animals and birds. But have you ever thought about why these are in danger? It’s because they have lost their natural habitat. They no longer have a suitable place to stay in. Take the polar bear for example… Do you think it will survive in a warm environment?? The answer is “NO” and everyone knows that. So you know what will happen if all the snow and ice capped mountains were to melt!
So what causes “global warming”?? It is mostly due to the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and variations in some natural phenomena like solar radiation and volcanoes. The increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases mostly results from human activities like burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.
So what can we do to save our planet?? It’s true that we cannot bring about massive changes but what can you and I do as an individual??
Here are a few simple things which we can do:
• We can conserve energy by turning off the lights, fans or other electrical appliances when not in use.
• A simple light bulb uses more energy as compared to a CFL bulb (compact fluorescent bulb). So when are you replacing your old bulb with a CFL?
• The old water heaters have tanks to store water and this is reheated every time you use it. The new European style heaters are tank less and can be used to heat water as and when you need it and saves energy.
• Try to recycle things whenever possible. It would save on the energy needed to manufacture those things.
• Let’s take a step towards a healthy lifestyle. Did you know that walking is one of the best form of exercise? So instead of sweating it out at the gym using complicated devices, why don’t you do a little walking? It would also save on the energy used by the various equipments at the gym.
• And instead of driving to work in your car, why don’t you use a bicycle to get there? It would save on the money you need to buy fuel for the car and also be an exercise for you.
Well these are just a few things that I know of and wanted to share with you. Thanks to opera I had this opportunity in discussing about the rising problems because of global warming. I look forward to gaining more knowledge about “climate changes” through this year's blog action day.
