recession., 700 billion, bailout
This is the trillion dollar question and I am certainly scouting for some answers...
Here is one interesting opinion -
whose bailout?. If what the author says is true, the world could be heading into a major recession.

News, merabsp.com, Shadow Copying
As I had discussed last time, we are in the process of getting the
news and current events section updated and fine-tuned for the Mera Bilaspur information site. While the work is underway we have also started with the news entry and delivery. We have also got the section registered with the News Search provided by Google.
The quantum of traffic that one single news item on the site has generated really surprised us. Our logs simple started filling and filling. It was as though there is no end to the news viewers. It is a different issue that we have not been able to retain the traffic for extra clicks and page views on the site. It is much more than what our entire
cricket section did in its peak.
Motivated by all the traffic we decided to quickly up date a couple of items on the page that would help improve presentation of the page and in turn give us better mileage of the position that we were in. When the work was done and ready for upload, we all got skeptic. We certainly did not want to deliver any errors for the duration of the page upload. There was no letting up of the traffic and any error pages would certainly spoil the attention the site was getting.
Just then, one of our colleagues remembered about the Shadow Copying feature of ASP.NET (our development platform). Strengthened with this information we decided to go ahead and test it and to our pleasant surprise it worked beautifully. No one must have noticed the change. The first page delivered after the upload must have been fractionally slower, we certainly did not notice any difference by the time we tested what we had uploaded.
It felt so good. Thanks to the smart guy who must have thought up the idea of Shadow Copy.

plesk, downtime, helm, experience
...
There!! One more downtime and this time was a big one.
It is apparent that my web host
(the agency which has been entrusted the job of hosting and keeping the site up and running) is having some problems with its hosting arrangements.
Mera Bilaspur is up and running this time on a new server with a new IP address and new hosting environment.
There were several maintenance issues that have forced him to change the system, which has also resulted in the change of hosting environment. Just when we had started feeling that we were comfortable with Helm, we have been ported to Plesk. Both the environments have their peciliarities and familiarization (fine-tuning) issues. The version of Plesk is obviously newer and appears to have more features and options that can be tweaked for better performance and control. But, more options also mean more chances of us bungling the settings.
Anyway we are not getting a hang of the new environment too. All this shifting and reconfiguring the hosting options has certainly effected our development schedules and targets. We have been put back by atleast a couple of weeks.
There have been several improvement to the sections of the site that are already running. Better paging information and page titles are making it a (we hope) friendly place. We have signed up with Google's News service and Google has started scanning us for
News Updates. A couple of our articles did get recognized and that again has recharged our energies. But, it hurts when we were not able to keep up the news uploading effort for the last couple of weeks. We have barely been able to upload news to keep the counter ticking but the level of work is far below our satisfaction.
All our team members have their fingers crossed and he hope things will be a little more stable from here on.

Web Hosting, downtime
Yes! it is probably the most horrible thing that a webmaster ever experiences. In the very recent past, we had two such incidents.
One was for about 12 odd hours when the system had crashed at our web-host and we were left high and dry. There was nothing we could do during this period only try and retry and retry. The second incident was pre-intimated. Our web-host had informed us that they were going to set up clustering so that the incident like the first one did not repeat itself.
This downtime was much longer about 36 odd hours. Though we were aware and mentally prepared for this time incident still as the clock ticked we started feeling so impatient, there was just nothing that we could do. It is certainly nagging when our clients (whom we represent us a sub-resellers) would look up to us to find out what was happening, we felt so helpless. We could understand the pain they might have been experiencing, because we were also missing our mails and communications.
I am not complaining or anything about our web-hosts. I must say they have consistently delivered good service and I am sure that they will continue to do so. They too must have faced their share of customers during the downtime.
Anyway I certainly hope that our principals have got their designs and configurations right and such downtimes are a thing of the past.

development, leanrning, multiple faculties, portal
In the course of managing and maintaining the
web portal the biggest change in me is that I am now learning the work of several faculties and mastering the art merging them together to produce the end product - our web portal.
So far, my team and I had focused only on the development aspect of any project. The collection, presentation and management of the content was always done by other people - subject specialists. I would always see these work out on our developed software and produce beautiful results (most times). Their work seemed so simple. Sometimes when a project interested me and was within the perview of my skillsets, I would pitch in and help them with their content development.
It appeared so easy. Once the software was ready all they had to was key in their content, prepare the necessary graphics and voila - the product. This was also one of the probable the one of the factors that influenced our decision to start this voluntary project of maintaining the
information site for Bilaspur city. Being low budget we were not able to hire the services of professionals in the project, so we decided there was no need to hire help for the
simple activities, they would be handled in-house.
In the beginning, it was fun. But now it is a challenge to come up with serious creative input on a consistent basis. It is strange how we have started sharpening our skills in the different faculties as and when we progress. I feel the members of our group are fast maturing specialist developers to masters of multiple faculties and I am enjoying it.
More so, the entire experience has certainly humbled me. Now I respect and honour the skills of people from all facutlties. I think that I appreciate people who can produce presentable work on a consistent basis than the one time bright heads who occasionally come up with outstanding work, though both the kinds are needed to keep the up excitement.

web, portal, experiences, development
I have been working as a member of the software development team at different levels for a better part of my working life and I always thought I was a big. My solutions have always been admired by my clients and peers alike. All this, somehow, made me think I was a big shot guy with super problem solving capabilities.
When the idea of undertaking the development of a
city web portal came up, it felt like a piece of cake. It appeared to be a simple exercise. The steps envisaged were quite straight forward...
- Develop the software for the portal.
- Write in a few content pages.
- Get the data collected and entered.
- Let some subordinate maintain it.
The steps still remain straight forward, but the exercise is certainly not as simple as I had considered it to be. It is an on going effort. We are more than a month into the development and hosting of the site and nowhere near completion on any front. The software development is coming along fine. This line of work is directly related to our daily activities and it not very taxing on any of us. The effort in content development and maintenance is more than what we had bargained for.
All in all the it has been a very humbling experience for me. My belief that software development was the major exercise has been shattered. I have realized that ultimately content very important. If not more, it is certainly as important as the development cycle.
Anyway, our portal is coming up great. Something is being added to it everyday. It is getting some good hits will be a portal with regular traffic within the next 4 to 6 months.
All fingers are crossed.

Web Portal Development
The whole of last week we were occupied with our other committments. It was the week of the starting of a new financial year and had us occupied beyond our working strengths. Naturally, the Bilaspur web-site project was the most neglected during this period.
Today, a couple of members from the team have sometime to spare and will be looking up the site again.

The biggest challange of the portal development cycle is that we have to evaluate the expectations of the users and strive to fulfill them before they loose interest in your site.
Whenever I demonstrate our web-site to someone, I keep a lookout for his/her "split" reactions. Most of the people who know you will never critisize or say that there is something wrong or they do not like what they are seeing. To catch their true reaction you have to keep one ahead of them and read their facial expressions when they evaluate what is in front of them.
These split reactions mean a lot to me and I try my best to meet the expectations that I am able to make out from them. Their facial expressions and body language speak volumes if observed and evaluated properly.
It is my experience that if the people are convinced that your content promise is in line with their line of thought they are willing to give your site a second and sometimes a third evaluation. If the pace of development and visible change in content is up to their satisfaction they become regular visitors of your site.
The dynamic nature of the websites allows developers like us to keep changing its content, layout, design, color etc. with every upgrade. The modern development tools make site wide changes and enhancements easy.
It gives me great satisfaction, when during some subsequent presentation I am able to demonstrate that his/her unexpressed desire has been fulfilled.

Two major things have happened in the past week that effects our working at
Data Spec. One a tragedy and the other a development. Both enought keep our team busy.
1. India is out of the
ICC Cricket World Cup 2007.
2. Our portal - मेरा बिलासपुर, The Information Site of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, India been installed in its own domain -
http://www.merabsp.com.
It was really disappointing to see India unable to make it to the Super Eight Series in the World Cup being played in West Indies. I don't think that there was a single Indian who had thought that India would not make it to the Super 8. It was a big shock and this has certainly made maintaining the Cricket section of our portal very heavy and uninteresting. But, our team at Data Spec has reinforced the believe that we will complete what we have started.
Meanwhile, we have booked our domain - www.merabsp.com - and have moved the site to it. With the development of the cricket section done, it has come into the maintenance and editorial mode. We shall now be able to concentrate where we left off. We have resumed the uploading of data about Bilaspur city.
Lets see how it shapes up.

web development, Web Site, Cricket World Cup
It is very easy to start development of a portal but management is hell as the sections / pages increase.
It has been chaos since we added the section on
ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 on our portal. We decided that we should add this cricket section as it is of great interest to most Indians, including Bilaspurians. With 15 days for the ICC CWC 2007 to begin it was one hell of a task.
- Collecting the interesting stuff.
- Preparing the interface
- Preparing the database and doing the dataentry
- Readying the software
- Uploading regularly
All this plus our regular work. Phew! It has really kept our entire team busy. In the end, I must added that it was well rewarded. I don't know which but some search engine must have given us a decent placement because we have started getting new traffic on our portal and they are logs indicate that most of these first landed on the Cricket home page.
I had started this blog to record the experiences that I in course of the development of this
web-portal and I have every intention of fulfilling this goal.
Now that the CWC 2007 deadline is met and every is smooth sailing, for the moment at least, we can concentrate on other activities.
Looking forward to contributing here more regularly in the future.
