Up Late

Textures of life the universe and everything 3D.

In 3D! Again.

Yes, it's back and bigger than ever! Well, maybe...

Are they at it again? Yes!

Ever since Adam saw Eve for the first time man has been wanting to see things in 3D. Or at least that's the message they keep selling. Hollywood brings out the latest technology for (wait for it) Viewing in 3D! Actually it's the same old thing. No, not the technology or even 3D that I speak of, but rather the same old thing: HOW CAN WE MAKE MORE MONEY ON THESE MOVIES!?

3D is cool, yeah. I love the whole simulated depth thing. I will stop and check it out wherever I see it at the mall, video store (that's where they use to rent videos) You might even find me checking out the new notebook covers, for Back to School, with all the cool-plastic-depth-illusion-3D stuff they have goin on. I use to do the whole crosseyed 3D stuff when I was a kid. I had the red and blue (Anaglyph)glasses and would even just wear them around like the guy in Back to the Future.

Here I even do some Stereoscopic 3D for kicks, with 3DS Max

But.

Until it is "hands free" no glasses Star Wars style holographic 3D...I wouldn't bet the farm. It will fade again until my kids have kids and they take me to see the latest from PixarWorks (yeah that's after Pixar takes over Dreamworks.) And we'll pay a lot more than the regular price because it will be in the ALL NEW! Amazing! 3D!

O.K. I've ripped enough on the whole glorious 3D resurgence and I may be wrong about THIS time. Think about this though. When we look at what THX did to sound, and Skywalker Sound did with their ears and brains, perhaps we just need the same thing to happen with 3D. Maybe Cameron will do it. Maybe not. But I think there is an art to using this “tool of 3D” that has yet to be wielded to the same degree as sound is now. Even now great immersive sound is spotty in movies. And I’m already seeing articles on the waning of 3D yet again.

This to me is a very simple thing. Look at the next stage of "game controllers" Kinect
Here’s what Ubisoft's Frederic Blais said recently, "... I think the future is about having a complete hands-free solution for the living room."

We just don't want to have to wear glasses to watch a movie. AND pay more? Are you kidding? Until that is fixed it will remain a fad that pops back around ever so often...like the McRib.

Just not as tasty.
