Passionate Evening...

, , , ...

A few weeks ago, we had an awesome evening of like-minded fellows. As with anything great, it was unplanned. From my view point, I chucked from my room, saw Felix's motorbike parked outside JavaNet Labs and decided to pop in.
In attendance was Felix, Sammy, Le-yo, JJ tha Cook, Jose aka Guru, Maggie. After a light banter, we came up with a plan to re-enforce the ICTGuild and gave an allegiance to support it even while out of school.
But this is not about that, this post is about the atmosphere created that evening, this is about the almost tangible passion that was in that room. Despite the rain pouring outside, the persons in 13A were all about making an impact, making a dent, making the world dance to their tune.
From obscurity to well defined plans being created after objectives, desires, admiration and prospects being laid bare we formulated panoramas of our individual and corporate futures as a team. A banner under which we can rally behind, strengths and opportunities.
One this is certain, guys can dream big and make it.

guys can dream big and make it.

We got guys who want to create productions houses, own ranches, retire at 30, become the bigwig in internet security, change societies and all have started in working towards the same and major leeways are to be done and reviewed in a few months.
From the already funded guys to the already housed guys, this is gonna definitely be big.
Pictures say a thousand words but I doubt whether these can satisfactorily put it bare the atmosphere from that evening.

Lets Recruit.

, , , ...

A few of the guys who founded OCC Maseno Chapter are in their fourth years with a few weeks remaining before we exit. I included, of course. Inspite the fact we are awesome and well prepared to leave we were about to leave a very thinned out team. We had to pull immense string to ensure this doesn't die out. Let me explain why?

After OCC got disbanded to form the street teams and the likes, we opted to remain and work as a team. Hence the formation of ICTGuild, lots of the ideologies we lifted from OCC but we diversified our scope expanding it to include:-

Designing and Developing
Distribution and Outreach
Research and Entrepreneurship

Designing and Developing The guys under this were in charge of the aesthetic values and the fundamental functions of the web, mobile, server and desktop application.

Distribution and Outreach The guys under this co-ordinated the dissemination of Open Source and Freeware software while enlightening the community as a whole on ICT.

Research and Entrepreneurship The guys here explore new opportunities and new markets products. They handle the business side of this as well as interested investors.

All in all, the ICTGuild is a platform meant to build solutions, promote entreprenuership, fuel ideas, nurture talent, create innovative minds, expose members. think global and enhance skills of members.

Rant: down I'm finishing school, will miss the guys
Rave: up I'm finishing school, more opportunities

We sure know how to have fun...

, , , ...

There is this thing in me that is super thrilled whenever i do things that were unplanned for like take on three new mentees when I have less than two months in school, when I decide to pursue a new project before I fully finish the previous one and my favorite one is when I get derailed from everything and pursue what we "techies" are not know to do. HAVE FUN.
Well such a day did come by, I had three meetings,an assignment due, a series of tasks to write code on and a guest later on but I chose to go out. I'm not a bad person but sometimes I need a break from all the hustle and bustle of programming.
Well, She called asking for company to take out a friend I first declined then I remembered Steve Jobs words "If this is my last night on earth, would I rather spend it at a business meeting or with this woman?" and I thought, "If I do not wake up tomorrow what would I say I did on my last day, write code or spend it having fun with beautiful ladies".
I guess you know the answer to that one.
Just some random photos of the day and early evening.

Sure had fun

All Talk And No Action

, , , ...

Hey, I've been in an interesting season in my life. Talks. I've either attended or organized a number of talks and not written a single line of code, not a single seemingly technical detail or approach to my life. awww But I feel a turn of events coming up. As I write this, I am supposed to be preparing for a Marketers Gala in support of the Children's Cancer Ward in a hospital in Kisumu. star Worthy Cause

My team "ICT Guild" had been given a products' table to display their merchandise. They will be showing a few of Opera Unite's features trying to localize it use, they have their own software they have created and this will be an ample time to showcase them. I say they because I will not be in attendance.

I on the other hand have sent out my apologies, Jess is a friend and she is incharge, AWESOME MARKETER I on the other hand plan to go for the Sirikwa website launch.

For the week ahead plan to get major steps ahead on the BOOKWORM project. I plan on implementing USSD which I have never worked with but I am sure I will find it to be simple. Already looking into NoSQL because I know it will be a big database but might end up opting for MySQL since someone else is responsible for the Databasing.

Work breakdown for BookWorm:

Whitney USSD server application and Java DB connections as well as query and optimizations.
Felix Web server, server side codes and website on pure HTML5 and CSS3.
Grace Database structure, DTD and all documentations relating to BookWorm plus all financial transactions.

Exit Stragegy

Our exit strategy is a buy-out, We already have someone interested in buying it yet it is a school project.
Still going through the students guide looking for a loophole for ownership of projects and academic papers undertaken as part of the course load.

Rant: down lazy me, no code
Rave: up awesome people and organizational skills displayed.

Commercialized love and me today

, , , ...

So, I decided to start going for classes, a few days to valentines, talk of getting derailed. None classes projects been keeping me busy, connecting people, doing CSR with the Elders class, went to visit Kibos Prison. Will do an album of the photos once they have been approved by the Prison authorities.

In unrelated news, decided to give eViewer our as open source so you can find here play around with the source code, give me suggestions of improving. I'm hopeful to restructure it before exams but I have to learn and apply USSD to some project for classwork, meeting today for the first meeting to allocate work then I'll have two weeks or less to finish my portion.
HCI assignment not done actually doing it now then down to applying for Opera internships yes, I'm applying then TEDxMasenoUniversity meeting then more code.
Clearly avoiding the seemingly unavoidable Valentine mood, but had chocolate in the morning. My friend made a custom calendar that has 30th Feb but missing Feb 14.

United against Commercialization of Love.

United against the Commercialization of love seems to be the mood by Hse13 and guys in JavaNet Labs. No big plot except for a long conversation over the phone in the evening. Otherwise, show and share love to the least expecting, smile a lot and be safe.
Just a thot: We give roses because they symbolize love, right, but why would we accept to express love via a seemingly destructive process as unplucking flowers to have them wither in no time.

Rant down :plucked roses, commercialization, excuse to loosely throw the " L " word
Rave up : chocolate, excuse to be nice and mend fences.

Success...

, , , ...

So my really moderately sized JavaSE Desktop app running on background and emailing clients is running ok. Will create an installer over the night and hand out the beta version out to a few people. let me know if you want to test it.
And by the way, I'll be presenting it in Chepkoilel on Saturday at the ICT Open day trying to get schools to use it to monitor computer usage in the labs.
Lest I forget, I am on the other side of school, no sweater, its cold and dark and at night and I'm hungry.
gnyt, Github vs SourceForge, perhaps I'll just toss it on my Opera Unite for limited hours, yes it finally downloaded sucessfully. love Opera

An App a Week and Peculiar Patterns

, , , ...

After much dilly dallying I'm applying for internship at Opera, that is if I can find all of my transcripts.
But yes, let me take a swing at it and I do not miss my swings.
Anyway been away, not really, with me head buried in code there are very few things that can disrupt my line of thought once
I'm in the zone. But all in all, after a somewhat disappointing email about the TVGuide, I decide to unwind by yes, you guessed it, writing code.
I ended up with a somewhat rudimentary Java desktop app, not much UI just a System Tray Icon and pop up menu, this time, that captures the screen-shots similar to PrintScreen button on the keyboard.

Well, been pumping the app with steroids an a few days later it was bulked up with functions I hadn't planned out at the start such as email the images as attachments to the relevant authorities (administrators) automatically, shields that disable the screencapture for specific periods of time, snipper mode that disables all notifications similar to silent/gaming mode to minimize interruptions, automatically deletion of the images from the default folder etc just a bit of fine tuning then
I'll let you know where you can get the app. I'm having a bit of problem as to how to package it, auto-start on loading OSusing a trial version of AdvancedInstaller and what to call it, but as of now lets just call it eViewer.
Interesting bit, I have been reviewing all the images apart from already deleted images before the I disabled the delete functionality and have drawn interesting conclusions with regards to my routines and patterns. Well you can get them via my Opera Unite Photo sharing app on this link. Sorry having a bit of trouble with my unite, later perhaps
Let me know what you think of my patterns.
This made my other JavaSE code look like crap, no more single java file then calling it an app.
Possible uses for this app with a bit of tweaking and customization:

  • School lab technicians monitoring what students are doing.
  • Tech-oriented company on employee slacking off at their desks.
  • Company to monitor employee arrival and departure times[/QUOTE]
rant down : 7 compulsory courses instead of 3 core and 5 electives. rave up : finally finished registering into school

Too Much Too Early?

, , , ...

As I always say, If you can't chew it don't bite it.
I am in my final semester, approximately 3 months from finishing school then out into the job industry. And as with all the prospective soon-to-be graduands a bit confused by the seemingly juxtaposition-ed feeling of excitement and anxiety had to confirm whether that's the right word to best describe this.
Excited to be finishing but anxious of the unknown, the unemployment levels in our country Kenya are really high and a university degree is no guarantee. Horror stories are told about job search/hustling which is commonly referred to as tarmacking. A way for a person in tech to overcome this is by getting their name know as a really good techie with mad skills and a

I can do anything given ample time and resources

which is what I've been doing for the past three years, ever since my first website that had server side functionality leave alone the fact that I had never stepped into a HTML class yet. Doing mobile applications for school projects and yet there is no lecturer who teaches on J2ME.
All in all, I'm neither scared nor worried about the world out there, famously as Uko Inje which loosely translates to "Out There" because it is all paying off. People notice unique guys, persons with a Midas Touch and a willing heart. All those hours spent buried in tutorial and sample codes. All those hours spent working on volunteer projects, hack-a-thons and person relations getting yourself out there. Well they are all worth it.

There is no point in being the best programmer yet no one knows about you. And I am not advocating for celeb status here, just be available to assist others and others will avail work to you direction.
Still thinking about interning at Opera.

Despite all the workload I already have I am going to take them all, never backed down from a challenge and not planning to start soon.
The Big Q

Too Much Too Early? Nope

Rant down : Still in school and the lack of elective courses for my final semester.
Rave up : Askofu and Chris M. for sending some work my way. Phil and Dennis for showing interest in my skills. Means a lot to me.

Danger

, , , ...

Its no news when a dog bites a man but the reverse, a man biting a dog is big news. Thats journalism 101.
Tuesday would have passed off as another normal day but with hindsight, I can see that it was a hop, step and jump over death traps all day long.
Didn't sleep at my place but at one of JavaNet's overnight labs extra beds, after a very eventful day. They only had a top decker that looked precariously dangerous. Well, managed to get some shut eye and fell into a temporary comatose till morning.
Had a surprise guest while taking a shower who apparently hates water on their body.
Ended up working with three computers, one playing Diana "Dee" Nduba's music with Twyse's Illsong Project and some poetry from Phill Allen, the other showing Sherlock Holmes' A Game Of Shadows and the other running some pretty heavy Graphics applications.
Little did I know that my feet were dangling inches away from a very messy entanglement of electric cords.

And the constant feet swaying to the awesome music was a ticket to ...
Anyway,
Have a danger free day.

Rave: Got the GUI representation started.
Rant: Pissed at someone
