The files at GR3 Project have been removed. I am mirroring them here; you'll find the links above. Of particular interest are the early versions and conceptual artwork of La-Mulana, as well as the game GR3 and its source code.

Oh, and there are really quite a few La-Mulana videos at YouTube now. If you're stuck somewhere maybe you will find one of them to be helpful.

TFMurphy writes: Did some investigative work regarding the underlying damage mechanics within the game. Thought some of you might be interested, seeing how it's useful for combat strategies. Lemeza begins the game with 32 VIT (if you go by the manual, this is 8 VIT where each point of VIT can be divided by 4... but that's too finicky, so I'll use the higher integer value, thanks). Each Life Jewel increases your VIT by 32 (the manual say 9 which would be 36 VIT, so this is clearly wrong). This gives you a maximum of 352 VIT (or 88 VIT if you go by the manual). Each pixel of your VIT is equal to 4 VIT (or 1 VIT if you go by the manual). Likewise, the EXP bar fills at 88 EXP (again, 1 EXP per pixel). The Body Armor cuts all damage you take by 20% to a minimum of 1 damage. The Scripture doubles your EXP gain. The damage that the various weapons you get do are as follows: Whip: 2 damage ( 6 damage with Whip MSX Combo) Chain Whip: 4 damage ( 8 damage with Whip MSX Combo) Mace: 6 damage (10 damage with Whip MSX Combo) Knife: 3 damage ( 6 damage with Knife MSX Combo) Keyblade: 2 damage Axe: 5 damage Katana: 5 damage Shuriken: 2 damage Throwing Knife: 4 damage Spear: 3 damage Flare Gun: 4 damage Bomb: 2 damage for 8 hits total (16 damage total) Pistol: 20 damage (Note: The La Mulana editor has different values for the Keyblade, Bombs and MSX Combo bonuses with regards to weapons; the above I list are accurate for the latest version of the game though) And now for the breakdown of the 8 Guardians. Amphisbaena =========== HP: 50 Can attack with Flame Jet (10 damage), and you take 24 damage if you touch it. Sakit ===== HP: 40 Immune to Subweapons. Large rocks cause 8 damage to you, rock shards cause 4 damage to you. The large energy balls cause 16 damage, you'll take 16 damage if you touch Sakit, and finally, getting punched does a massive 48 damage to you. Ellmac ====== HP: 48 Both the Fireballs and the rocks do 8 damage to you. Touching Ellmac does 48 damage. Bahamut ======= HP: 60 Fireballs do 2 damage, Flame Jet does 16 damage, and getting hit by Bahamut himself does 8 damage. Finally, you take 4 damage per sound (you'll know what I mean when you fall into the water) from drowning, despite having the Scalesphere. Viy === HP: 70 The Tentacles have 10 HP each. Touching them causes 20 damage to you, and their bullets cause 6 damage to you. The Gargoyles have 3 HP each and touching them causes 6 damage. Viy can hit you with Bullet Spray (8 damage) or its Laser (96 damage). If you touch the eye stalk, that's 30 damage, and if you touch Viy's core, that's 64 damage. Palenque ======== HP: 64 Colliding with the Pillars does 32 damage. Palenque will attack with Bullet Spray (8 damage), Blades (16 damage), Bombs (32 damage) and his Laser Beam (128 damage). Touching him does 128 damage to you. Baphomet ======== HP: 60 There are four witches - Mage (White, attacks with electricity for 2 damage each), Sorcerer (Green, attacks with flames for 4 damage each), Druid (Beige, attacks via paralyzing bolts) and Witch (Red, attacks with energy blasts for 3 damage each). All of them have 4 HP, and touching them does 2 damage to you. Baphomet himself can attack you with Flame Pillars (10 damage if you get hit from below, 20 damage if you run into the side of them) and Lightning Bolts (30 damage). He can also summon rotating Energy Balls that have 5 HP each and hit you for 2 damage. Touching Baphomet does 80 damage to you. Tiamat ====== HP: 100 The Rear Bats that occupy this area have 2 HP and deal 3 damage when you run into them. Tiamat's Hair Whip attack does 8 damage, as does her Eye Bolts when you destroy an Infinity Symbol. Touching her or getting hit by her tail does 32 damage. === It's both interesting and instructive to convert these damage numbers into percentages of Life Jewels - for example, 4 Life Jewels for touching Palenque means a lot more to most of you than just the number 128. Anyways, hope that was useful to some of you.

TFMurphy writes: And while I'm here, I may as well ask a question about Hell Temple, since I can't seem to figure it out myself. Got to Room 34, no doorway for me to enter. This is despite having visited Room 21 (can't figure out why the numbers of Rooms 21 and 28 got changed around), defeating the Hecatoncheire and the Uridimmu there and reading the Tablet that appeared. As far as I can see in the Editor, all the flags necessary to make the entrance appear in Room 34 should've been set. But... still no entrance in Room 34. Anyone have any ideas what I'm missing?

popecrunch writes: TFMurphy, would you mind if I copied the damage data you discovered? I'm putting together a wiki at http://www.crunch.mynuts.org/lamulana/tiki-index.php - there's not a whole heck of a lot there just yet, but. As I get more time to work on it (and hopefully more folks will join in), I'd like to have graduated info - starting with very basic maps and general hints, with more specific and spoilery information if the reader chooses. I'd like to use your info and credit you. If you're OK with me using the data, is there a webpage or email address I should stick in your byline?

Madamluna writes: White Knell, may I ask you a question? I'm planning on doing a Let's Play La-Mulana bonus video (showing off ROM combinations, finding secrets etc) with a friend tonight, and I am very curious about this: MSX2 Combinations: 27. ハイパーラリー (Hyper Rally) + 37. ロードファイター (Road Fighter): Allows you to communicate with the hidden MSXs. Now Ian Kelley sent me the ripped translated script to the game, and inside are some hidden developer messages from Naramura, Samieru and duplex. I have the sneaking suspicion that this ROM combination is how you can access these, but where are the "hidden MSXs?" The only other MSX I'm aware of is Shorn's and you can access that normally. I would really appreciate your help, as I'd love to show off the developer messages if I can!

White Knell Friday, July 13, 2007 3:08:15 PM

You must enter the following hidden rooms with the aforementioned cartridges equipped to read the developers' messages.

月光聖殿 (Temple of Moonlight) B-1

http://files.myopera.com/White%20Knell/blog/B-1.gif -
Attack downward at around this location.

滅びの塔 (Tower of Ruin) D-3

http://files.myopera.com/White%20Knell/blog/D-3.gif -
Attack the rightmost wall at around this location.

I'm afraid that I can't remember where the third room is, sorry. If you find it, please enlighten me. :)

You'll be required to copy-and-paste the database URLs into your address bar until I find the time to rectify the issue.
