Redesigning My.Opera space tutorial - Index Page

, ,

[img]http://tinypic.com/i22ivk.jpgI wrote 5 (IMHO) logical parts of modifying any Opera community space to meet your needs and desires...
It is my personal recommendation that you read this parts one by one, and not to jump from one to another, at least if you are not experienced with CSS and you are reading it for the first time.
In the first parts all the elements are explained, documented and 4 examples are added (code + screenshots), and in later parts you will only be directed to specific parts of main.css for your template to search and modify it yourself since all elements you might want to change have been briefly explained before.

If you like this spotlight it [img]http://tinypic.com/i23t5z.jpg

Title text, Subtitle text, Header image and menu background [Link]

Part 2: Blog on My.Opera

A no way out situation regarding Opera Community

,

When community is stable it is slow .. and it is unstable quite too often...
Team working on the community is simply too small to handle all the requests form users and hardware running this is simply not able to handle it or is simply wrong configurated..
I've been active here almost 6 months now, and I can't say anything spectacular happend, though hard work can be seen..
Anyway... I will continue working on what I personally can change, by making interesting posts albums good suggestions, new sections I'll moderate and so on, but I really hope that Opera Software ASA will see the potential of Opera Community and help it grow by adding more people and funding to community...

Opera Community Promotional Survival Kit

,

Due to huge amount of problems in my life, I was unable to update this blog for a while... I can't say that problems are fixed, but I can say that I'm not a man that can let stuff like that stop him filling his obligations and, I see this as one of those...
I feel obligated to keep some things over here alive, because I was the one that probably started them and gave them some initial boost...
Anyhow... in this post you will find some new graphics... nothing spectacular, but someone might find them usefull because currently there is no oficial material for promoting Opera Community.. not a single banner (will also try to make some tomorrow in next few days), and stuff regular users could use such as signatures, avatars and userbars...

So here they are..

Opera Community avatars x 3 [50x50]

Opera Styles ~ hidden beauty

,

I've been thinking latetly very much about this... Fred mentioned here that he is working on few new skins, and as we all saw yesterday one is unleashed... and it is a piece of art!

But...

You all remember that some time ago I wrote that tutorial about tweaking and editing your user css settings... made some graphics too... and so on...
Well many people liked it very much, it really got some publicity both from my opera staff and from users...
And that is all nice

But...

There is a very problematic matter...
There are just 7 skins of which 4 are blue...

I stated this already, few times before, but now I'm writing more seriously about this...
We have few things here to discuss..

1. We have 39 forums + 6 as a part of The Longue. That forum is a part of this community, yet there is not a single forum about Opera community, we only have Site Feedback and Suggestions but that one is used for all sort of things and not only for my.opera.com, but also for opera.com , portal.opera.com and so on...
2. There is The Style Council group... and it is run by very skilled people, and also has a very nice number of users... but.. it is pretty much dead...
3. There is currently no way for a member to contribute skins or ideas or css hacks and tutorials that would be enough public and enough spolighted..

What I suggest:
1. As said many times before... Make some serious discussions about my.opera.. my idea would be to split current forums and make some new ones... Move it on top of Opera Browser for Desktop category. This is the list of forums I would make.
The Opera Community
  • Announcements and General Information
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Site Feedback and Suggestions My.Opera Wish-list
  • My.Opera Help
  • Styling your pages
  • My.Opera bug reports

Opera community really needs an offical place where people can discuss features they have there, and an official place for styles related discussions...

We need official The Style Council, maybe run by the same people (R-E-S-P-E-C-T), but still we need a place that would be available to anyone... It would be much more live and much more serious than it currently is.. people would share styles, contribut stuff and make that current number of ready to use styles (that is very problematic in comparison to other blog services) grow very fast..

With reorganized forum people would have much more chance to discuss things related to Opera community, also would help developers track bug reports and wishes much easier...

It would really be nice to make it possible for people to share their styles and help others design their pages or personalize them a bit... things already done to help this happen (like Jere's or mine tutorial) got very good feedback from public, but in both cases people can't discuss them, or share their views on that matter.. or if they make something good sher it with everyone, maybe even get their style among ones that are currently there for everyone to select and use

My.Opera team has a lot of things to do each day.. but not everything must be done by them  Make it possible for us other to make something for everyone

Suggestion: 2 quick fixes for posting template for blogs and forums

, ,

1. Font style:
Making users possible to use more fonts in font selector. It is working, but can not be selected from current template.
These fonts can be found on pretty much any machine and most of them are preinstaled with OS, so I believe that users should have real choice if there is an option for them to choose.
Impact, Verdana, Trebuchet Ms, Comic Sans MS, Garamond, Georgia, GothicE, GothicI, GothicG . . . etc.

2. Font size:
Making users possible to make a real choice between font sizes. It is working (bug there), but can not be selected from current template.
Georgia 1
Georgia 2
Georgia 3
Georgia 4
Georgia 5
Georgia 6
Georgia 7

Suggestions: Possible abuse of resources...

, ,

Some topic not too long ago made me think about possible ways of abusing my.opera space...
Lets talk just about bandwith abuse at this moment, comment and account spam is another thing.
Now as far as I know you can hotlink almost anything hosted on my.opera personal space.. and that means that you can send a link to a friend but that also means that you can put a clip or a big zip or simply hires image couple of MB big and hotlink it from any other page and simply parasite from Opera's resources... and ok.. that is fine until it is resonable amout of resources... but there is 300 MB of space and ways of abuse are unlimited...

Just few examples:
1. Upload 10 MB clip (funny video), hotlink it from an outside blog, submit it to few fun portals and you will have lets say 50 000 or 100 000 views of that video a day. That means 1 TB of bandwith would be killed in a day... or link usage would be (1 000 000 x 8 / 86400) ~ 9.23 Mbit per second..
2. Upload 1.5 MB HiRes scan of some magazine photo.. upload 6 pics as an example of a photo shoot ... 9 MB total make a post on your forum or blog, submit it to couple of portals and blogs.. if approved that would get you approrx 20 000 - 30 000 unique visits = 270 GB daily or 3.125 Mbit per second.
3. Upload 25 MB zip / rar ... lets say demo album or legal or illegal music.. post it on few warez portals and it will get you 20 000 - 30 000 unique visits a day ... to cut the crap another 750 GB of bandwith or 8.68 Mbit.
etc

Ok.. some of these stuff are legal usage of my.opera space, some are not.. still.. all are possible to qet out with...
I don't know how big link my.opera's servers have and what kind of abuse they can handle (from what I've seen lately, they can't handle normal everyday use) but these stuff are something you should try fighting against.
For example.. you can upload a huge zip (tested yesteday) full of images for your photo album, than manually collect links and hotlink them from other place... why not try to make some sort of hotlink protection in folders album uses for storing files at least? I know there could be issues with refferer since some browsers including opera can block it and some firewalls can do it too.. but there must be a way of making it work...
Also.. why not implementing page with capcha for downloading files bigger than 1 MB from my.opera files... also maybe put on that page "report illegal content" or something like that... hotlinking videos results as a redirect to a page where that video can be viewed but from my.opera.com not some other page... and so on...

Anyhow this is a very serious thing, and I really believe that it should be on a to-do list for my.opera dev's;)
