My 0.02$ on Opera Community development

Opera Styles ~ hidden beauty

,

I've been thinking latetly very much about this... Fred mentioned here that he is working on few new skins, and as we all saw yesterday one is unleashed... and it is a piece of art!

But...

You all remember that some time ago I wrote that tutorial about tweaking and editing your user css settings... made some graphics too... and so on...
Well many people liked it very much, it really got some publicity both from my opera staff and from users...
And that is all nice

But...

There is a very problematic matter...
There are just 7 skins of which 4 are blue...

I stated this already, few times before, but now I'm writing more seriously about this...
We have few things here to discuss..

1. We have 39 forums + 6 as a part of The Longue. That forum is a part of this community, yet there is not a single forum about Opera community, we only have Site Feedback and Suggestions but that one is used for all sort of things and not only for my.opera.com, but also for opera.com , portal.opera.com and so on...
2. There is The Style Council group... and it is run by very skilled people, and also has a very nice number of users... but.. it is pretty much dead...
3. There is currently no way for a member to contribute skins or ideas or css hacks and tutorials that would be enough public and enough spolighted..

What I suggest:
1. As said many times before... Make some serious discussions about my.opera.. my idea would be to split current forums and make some new ones... Move it on top of Opera Browser for Desktop category. This is the list of forums I would make.
The Opera Community
  • Announcements and General Information
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Site Feedback and Suggestions My.Opera Wish-list
  • My.Opera Help
  • Styling your pages
  • My.Opera bug reports

Opera community really needs an offical place where people can discuss features they have there, and an official place for styles related discussions...

We need official The Style Council, maybe run by the same people (R-E-S-P-E-C-T), but still we need a place that would be available to anyone... It would be much more live and much more serious than it currently is.. people would share styles, contribut stuff and make that current number of ready to use styles (that is very problematic in comparison to other blog services) grow very fast..

With reorganized forum people would have much more chance to discuss things related to Opera community, also would help developers track bug reports and wishes much easier...

It would really be nice to make it possible for people to share their styles and help others design their pages or personalize them a bit... things already done to help this happen (like Jere's or mine tutorial) got very good feedback from public, but in both cases people can't discuss them, or share their views on that matter.. or if they make something good sher it with everyone, maybe even get their style among ones that are currently there for everyone to select and use

My.Opera team has a lot of things to do each day.. but not everything must be done by them  Make it possible for us other to make something for everyone

I agree. I've created quite a few designs and headers (which you've been kind enough to link to), but no one can use them if they don't know where to find them. I've often wondered now that my.opera.com is taking off, there needs to be a "place" for discussions about it and it alone. Its functionality (how to), styling for the Opera stylesheet specifically (because there is plenty of HTML and CSS help out there if you bother to Google it). I've fielded a number of questions from people struggling to make modifications to their blogs. And face it, bloggers as a whole are a restless lot and most of them aren't satisfied with out of the box designs. Maybe they just want to change a banner or the color of their post titles. A definite place for them to go seek this information would be nice. And also a separate place for my.opera.com templates (there's a lot of talent out there just waiting to be tapped into) would be nice as well.

Just my "two cents"!

It is true that we need a serious thought for styling the Opera. I am fully agree with you about this matter...

What a great idea! Me and a group of friends, that currently
use Yahoo groups, are here to test things out, and we are literally fumbling in the blind, here. We don't know how to do anything! But we are sooo tired of Yahell, and we like what we see here so far...

A well organized area with get started/how to and good Faq sections is what we need. And most of us are into graphics and very much like to be able to customize. I'm fairly new to Opera browser, as well, and wild horses couldn't drag me back to IE!

Hope to see this realized!
