The woodmouse, the hedgehog and a curious fox

In the early evening I spotted a wren, the first in the garden.
And later a woodmouse appeared on the feeder, making good use of the supports! For once, and this isn't a regular thing, we'd put out some dog food to see if we could tempt the larger mammals. Well we did, after a fashion. No sooner than I'd put the food out than a hedgehog emerged from under a shrub.
InvestigatingIt was at this moment that Roofy the fox appeared. I missed the moment, but he crept up behind, sniffed at the rear of the hedgehog and decided that he wasn't going to mess! The hedgehog froze and hissed, but didn't curl into a ball. I was surprised at just how much noise they make.
Decent set of teeth
Roofy decided to show off instead
Hedgy wasn't impressed
So Roofy settled down to watch!
And Hedgy just chomped away until the bowl was clean...The hedgehog seems to be a new resident in the garden. That's a couple of times now it's appeared at the back of the garden, worryingly close to the foxes' earth/entrance (which seems to get bigger by the day... more earth was piled up this morning). But it seems that foxes are as cautious as dogs where sharp spines are concerned, so maybe they'll get along ok.

That woodmouse is certainly making itself at home!

I have foxes coming most nights behind the back wall of my garden. I have observed in the past how a fox will be eating (where I leave munchies) and a hedgehog will quickly amble towards the food and the fox runs a mile! The "I was here first" rule doesn't seem to apply!!

Love that shot of the relaxed fox, and Ms Tiggy Winkles seems to be chowing down like there's no tomorrow.

And thanks Anon for the extra info on fox-hedgehog encounters.
