Tales of a South Downs fox... and other ramblings

Well we've not had a fox on the front page for a while...

, ,

I just noticed that there was no sign of a fox on the front of the blog. That can't be right! So without further ado....
Among the flowers

A cooling drink

Look before you leap

Those were taken this evening. Earlier in the day I was back watching the gulls and then down at the pond. First, one for the family album (Dad was behind the camera whistle )

And at the pond, a magnificent crow...

And a skipper butterfly, with a strange bug sharing the flower head.

There are more birds in the June Birds album, including a very impatient chick.

Camera note: all daytime shots taken with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS. As usual I added the Kenko Teleplus 1.4x Pro 300 DG teleconverter for the gulls. The foxes were taken with the EF70-300mm 4.5-5.6 DO IS lens.

Darko, yes the difference in size in just a week or so is really noticeable.

Words Wednesday, June 11, 2008 6:33:00 AM

Mark, it must get pretty hot up there for them. There's not much shade for them to get under.

Great shots! The bug reminds me of a larger version of a scale insect - interestingly, if you look at them very close, they resemble tortoises...I obviously have too much time on my hands! bigsmile

The foxes are looking really healthy. I really like this "Gull Family." up Words!

The gull family album shot is priceless! lol

Lovely skipper too!

Words Wednesday, June 11, 2008 9:43:35 PM

Vulpes, I'm fairly sure the butterfly is a 'large skipper', but I haven't been able to i.d. the bug. Maybe some sort of shield bug, but 'tortoise bug' sounds good to me. I can see the resemblance to scale insects (I took a sequence of photos of them last year on a friend's tree).

Cynthia, thanks. The foxes are doing fine! I must try and properly identify 'mum and dad' gull. I have a feeling that might be dad in the picture. I really need a good shot of them together to judge size.

Adele, the young ones have taken to walking along the roof ledge. It gives me vertigo just watching! The skipper was a bit of a bonus, but we get some interesting butterflies there as the weather warms up.
