It rained all day Saturday, but today was better. I've concentrated on the smaller garden visitors, all the birds are relatively rare sightings here (with maybe the exception of the robin).

An even briefer showing by a song thrush

And even a red admiral paused for rest

Camera note: the damselfly nymph was taken with the Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG macro lens and Canon 430EX flash unit (I half-pulled the diffuser out to deflect the light downward). The birds and butterfly were all taken with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens.

Hmm, nice range of shots. The red admiral is starting to look as if it doesn't have too many air-miles left on it smile

I take it you couldn't persuade the thrush to look in your direction with its photo smile

Brendan, yes quite let for butterflies though I think the red admirals tend to be around slightly longer than most other types. As for the thrush, if you look closely you can see it's already taking off in the other direction. I was lucky to grab that shot!

Vulpes, we had chaffinches and greenfinches around as well yesterday, but the goldfinch is easily the most photogenic.

Wow a Butterfly in November, bigsmile It was much nicer weather yesterday, sometimes its strange that you get monday to friday of lovelly sunshine then its wet on the saturday, oh well lol.

Ok, October 19th seems to be the latest from last year for a red admiral. I read once that it's the change in traffic patterns that causes it to rain at the weekend. The air cools, and down it comes. Not sure if that's true or not, but it certainly feels like it at times. Mind you today was pretty damp as well.

Neil, it's nice to see them this late, and they seem less flighty as well (though somewhat prone to rest higher off the ground at this time of year. Resting rather than feeding I imagine.

That goldfinch is beautiful. I guess we're getting back into prime finch season again. I cannot believe that it's November already faint Time to look for siskins and bramblings soon!

The year's certainly shot by. I'm fascinated by how some of the seasonal certs appear as expected, but other past regulars are nowhere to be seen. I'm pleased though that the goldfinches have started to use the garden.
