Tales of a South Downs fox... and other ramblings

Pretty as a Picture

, ,

I still can't quite believe that we are getting a real spring this year, but the evidence is all around. Plants coming into bloom, blossom on the trees; and small birds filling the air with song while rabbits frolic in the grass.

The sky was remarkably clear of raptors today, or maybe that was because my eyes were focused nearer the ground. I caught a glimpse of this next beauty as I was heading back after a lunchtime walk. I probably have seen them before, but it's something I've never managed to photograph. It came to rest just beyond a wire fence, flitted around and finally settled more or less with a clear line of sight.

I also saw a peacock (butterfly), as well as rabbits. Rabbits everywhere, young ones and adults. In one wooded area I was looking around their warren and a head popped up out of a hole, saw me and ducked back down again. A perfect shot missed, but a great moment. I did eventually get some shots out by the fields.

What great shots! I really like the bird in the blossoms. Our Spring is also finally here after a cold miserable winter. Love the way things are coming back to life again.

I love number one, it is beautiful! The Brimstone butterfly looks like a leaf, I didn't realize it and searched for the lady... then I saw. The Dunnock photo is sweet, too. Nice spread all around!

Now that is a perfect long-tailed tit photo!

Eh, brimstones. You were lucky that it settled - it took me numerous futile chases before I found a cooperative one on Saturday :insane:

Robin, thanks! Spring is such a good time of year. The long-tailed tits are such pretty little things. It was a treat to get them among the blossom.

Jill, having now got a photo of one, I realize just how difficult brimstones are to spot. In the air they stand out really well, but virtually vanish on landing. Great camouflage.

Adele, but I also got one when it's hiding behind a twig  I wouldn't have known what th ebrimstone was without seeing your shot. I'd seen one further up the path (flying) and had given up. This one was at the edge of a building site, all dust and concrete.

Mark, yes proper spring weather. The moon was up early tonight, but it's started to get slightly hazy last time I looked out. But you might be in luck.

Neil 7. April 2009, 20:25
