Tales of a South Downs fox... and other ramblings

Dragonflies, squirrels and a hint of fox

, ,

The dewpond proved a fruitful spot this lunchtime, with several darters clinging to the fence surrounding the pond and one pair in typical mating activity. I've added several shots to the Butterflies and Bugs album (plus a Painted Lady), but this one is probably the pick of the bunch.

No sign of the woodpecker today, but the squirrels were in a foraging frenzy and this one - not realizing I was in the vicinity - darted out of the woods into broad sunshine.

This fellow is rarely camera shy, and tonight was no exception. He spent about 25 minutes out there with me mid-evening, and for most of that time there was the distinctive rustling of the other young fox on the far side of the fence. I would love her to show her face (I'm assuming it's a young vixen), but most nights she seems happy to stay out of sight, albeit just a yard or so away.

It's Autumn...

, , , ...

The leaves are falling, and the colours are deepening. It's most certainly 'that time of year' again and the launch of the annual 'Autumn Photo Network' (APN). There's a link to current albums somewhere in the side-bar (I wish I could re-arrange the order that displays, but I promise it's there). And so for tonight I'll start with a couple (the only two in fact) so far in my Autumn in Sussex album.

Glistening inkcaps

Do check out the other albums in the APN. If last year is typical, there will be some amazing photos from around the world appearing over the next month or so.

I've one other shot for tonight. It's a young newt which will slowly lose its gills over the next few weeks. We seem to have a healthy number of them in the pond, but trying to spot them among the weed (they're tiny) is a lengthy process! I'll be adding more to the Amphibians album, but for now will close tonight's post with this shot.

A new visitor to the garden (and some old friends)

, ,

I had a surprise this morning when I looked outside. There was something large attacking the bird feeder. It seems that one of the local squirrels has discovered our garden. As far as I can recall this is the first time I've seen a squirrel in the garden. A year or so ago I caught a brief glimpse of one in a neighbouring garden, but for some reason (an over abundance of foxes perhaps) they've kept their distance until now. So that's another creature to keep watch for out there, to add to the foxes, wood mice and occasional hedgehog. Plus of course the birds which now flock to the seed feeders. It can get quite busy out there at times!

The wood mouse was back again tonight. I've been worried about this little one as a couple of weeks ago it showed up with its tail in a frightful state. It seems fine now and the wounds (probably inflicted by another wood mouse - they fight among themselves apparently) are healing nicely.

To complete the collection mammals for today, the young fox was back again.

Fox update - return of the old male

, ,

You may recall that towards the end of last year we attempted to treat the old male fox for mange, but he vanished before we could complete treatment. We last saw him on Boxing Day, and he looked in reasonable shape. Well he was back tonight, and I'm afraid that the mange seems to have taken hold.

His rear legs are worst affected, and his brush is badly diminished.

We gave him some food with cod liver oil.

The feeding is mainly to keep him interested so there's a chance he'll come back. The oil helps their coat a bit, but isn't going to make much headway in his current state. I'll try to get some ivermectin from the local centre, so if he does return we can start the treatment again. His face is heavily scarred, but I think those are mainly battle wounds. He's no kid, and has a tough job to hang on to his territory.

That old familiar face

One final photo - this time of a squirrel at work today. There are more in the Squirrel album.
