Tales of a South Downs fox... and other ramblings

A mixed bag

, , , ...

No grand theme today, just some shots taken over the past 24 hours.

I'll start with the hedgehogs, with a shot taken in the early hours of Friday morning. It's not the best shot I've taken, but it's the first with three hogs in the same shot (just). It seems that somewhere over the summer we have acquired a new youngster.

The little one was being very cute, more or less hanging on the tail of its mother much in the manner of duckling.

Next I'll set the location for today's sea-bird shots...
St Paul's Cathedral

Yes I was back in London, for two meetings. Thankfully both were on the South Bank of the river just a short 10 minute walk apart.

Lift-off

Those were taken just before my first meeting. The next was taken at lunchtime, at Bankside (just by the Tate Modern).
Lesser(?) Black-Backed Gull

The most unusual sighting though was overhead. I caught a glimpse of a bird that didn't look 'right'. It wasn't a gull, or a cormorant or a pigeon. It was what I think must be the first raptor I've spotted in the centre of London. I am much more used to seeing these in downland or coastal areas, so it was something of a surprise. The photo was grabbed and is a full-size crop. My first thought was a juvenile peregrine (they nest at the Tate Modern and the very direct flight/swoop over the Thames seemed appropriate), but it is also suspiciously kestrel-like. I don't have a confirmed i.d. for this one.

And so to the garden. Bold was back. Her leg is improving (though she still carries it a lot of the time); but she seems to have acquired a second injury, this time around her right eye (it was partially closed). I couldn't see any obvious damage, and the photos I got are inconclusive as to the extent.

To Boldly Go...

, ,

Well Bold finally put her best (worst?) foot forward tonight. It was tentative and it was slow, but she is now definitely putting some weight on the injured foot. Anything above a gentle step forward and she carries it and does her best imitation of a loping bunny-hop, but it's really good to see some progress at last. It will be interesting to see how rapidly things change (or not) over the next week or so.
A full step on the injured left front leg.

She's still in her curl-up-and-sleep mode, this time on the wood chips which have added 'fox bed' to their main purpose of weed suppression.

No trail cam footage from last night. I forgot to put the data card in it Homer: Doh! No doubt the hedgehogs would have appeared, which is about the best excuse I have for posting this last shot (taken this evening).
Peek-a-boo!

If you go to the front page of the blog you'll see that the annual Blog Action Day is nearly upon us. This year the theme is 'climate change', which is timely as I've noticed it getting colder lately  Click the button for more details.

Colours

, , ,

It turned into a beautiful autumnal day today, with vibrant colours at sunset. The sky was shot with grey clouds which glowed gold and pink. These moments are all too brief. Within a couple of minutes the colour had washed away.

Those colours reminded me of a shot I'd taken earlier in the day. It was also a colourscape, but this time formed of the fish in one of the ornamental ponds at work.

Goldfish

Back at home the vixen's nap was disturbed by what we think was a badger coming in from a neighbouring garden. It was certainly something large, and the noise it made as it entered the garden goes some way to discounting a cat (I'm certain it wasn't another fox). In any event, Bold shot up the garden on three legs and high alert. It's been over a week that she's been limping. She is now willing to place the foot gingerly on the ground which is a good sign that her injury is slowly healing. Here she is resting shortly before the intruder startled her.

Finally, because I know there's a huge cuteness factor in the shot and I'm shamelessly willing to exploit it, here's tonight's hedgehog portrait...

Camera note: All taken with the 400D (I'm missing the ease of the 40D, but hopefully will get that back from being repaired in the next week to 10 days), and: Sunset - EF17-40mm f/4L USM; Goldfish - EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM; The Bold Vixen - EF200mm f/2.8L USM; and finally the hedgehog - EF70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM.

What is the hedgehog searching for?

It must be somewhere round here.

Getting warmer

I can smell it but I still can't see it.

Ah, there it is!

Approach very carefully

Gently does it!

And... gotcha!

A Garden Interlude

, ,

I'll be back with the St Davids' blog tomorrow, but I thought it about time for a brief catch up on what's been happening in the garden. We are still seeing the hedgehog nightly, and while we were away the trail cam caught the badger passing through on a couple of occasions, and two foxes: Bold and the cub (though generally not at the same time). I don't recall seeing Stumpy, but I've only scan-viewed the footage.

During the week since our return from Wales it's been fairly quiet (at least whenever I've gone to look). That changed last night (or strictly speaking, the early hours of Friday morning). First was one of the hedgehogs...

Shortly after that I spotted that something had triggered the trail cam again. I went up to look and came face to face with a badger. It paused for a moment or two before ambling off but I was able to get one shot off before it disappeared.

I still hadn't seen a fox though since before we went away; until earlier this evening that is, when the bold vixen limped into the garden. She's injured her front left leg, and was carrying it high. I think that's probably the first fox injury of the year, which is pretty good going. I couldn't see any physical sign of injury, so it's (hopefully) one of those strains that will quickly heal itself. Apart from the foot, she seemed in good shape.
