Installing Opera Mini on a Palm

Updated 24 January 2006 - official launch day It's now officially a breeze!

Step 1) You need to have the correct Java environment on your Palm. You can pick this up from WebSphere. Hotsync this to to your Palm in the usual way. This installs the IBM Java VM app. You also get preferences in the standard 'preferences' Palm interface. Install the Java VM via a hot sync. Edit March 2008: The free download is no longer available. the best I can find to date is SuperWaba VM for Palm, but please note I have not tested it. Please comment if you have tried it. Also check latest comments for other sources.

Step 2) Then go to http://mini.opera.com and follow the download wizard instructions. Direct link for Palm devices.

For more info see my Palm pages

If you have trouble getting the free version of Java VM from the link in stage 1, try the versions at Handango.

Free version of SuperWaba Java VM for Windows Pocket devices is available here.

Great advice on installing operamini. I,myself was looking for a webbrowser for my Moto C650. Found opera mini. at www.wap.GetJar.com/4

I found out that using the Java Wireless Toolkit from http://java.sun.com/products/sjwtoolkit/download-2_2.html you can actually test OperaMini on your Desktop. See http://www.eternium.de/wp/?p=19 for a (German) instruction on Linux. If need arises for an English translation, let me know.

Can you suggest a particular web host? I've signed up for three so far, the first two never sent me EMail confirmation and the third wouldn't allow direct linkingc to the files -- do these freaking morons understand how the Internet is supposed to work???

Thanks for turning me on to Opera Mini. It'll never replace Blazer on my T|X (though I might use it on my phone), but it's good to see what my pages will look like in as many browsers as possible -- besides, it's cool. Anyway, your instructions are needlessly complex...I found a simpler way to install Opera Mini on a Palm.

1. Get the Java VM as described above.
2. Make sure your Palm can connect to the Internet, then launch the Java VM.
3. Select Install and enter http://mini.opera.com/mini.jad for the URL.
4. Enjoy!

No WAP browser needed...but in the process of discovering this, I found a nice WAP browser for Palm called WAP Universe ( http://www.wapuniverse.com ).

EDIT BY WORDS: Please note this info is no longer current. Please instal via the prc file on the Opera Mini site.

Hi Marnen

Thanks for the feedback... appreciated. I couldn't get the direct Java VM route to work on my T|C, hence the complicated work around. But I'm not surprised that there's an alternative.

marnen 28. December 2005, 14:40

Hmmm. I wonder what the difference is that's keeping it from working for you. FWIW, I'm using IBM Java VM 2.2.012.

jonimueller 3. January 2006, 02:37

Thank you SO MUCH for this! I've been wanting to blog from my Sony Clie TJ-37 for a while now. I haven't been this excited since I found out about sliced bread! ;-)

What VM are you using on the clie? I downloaded the latest from IBM, but it's says my device (a TH55) is not supported.

Words 24. January 2006, 23:20

Charles,

I'm using a Palm Tungsten C. Palm license the Java VM so it may be restricted to Palm handhelds.

Might be worth checking out this link and downloading a trial version for Palm OS (the single license version is the one to go for ):

It should work. There's a discussion link over on the Brighthand Life Drive forums.

It works on a T2! Only one fatal error so far. It does make the light on the Palm bink a lot. High res in the JVM does work, but I lose most of the page graphics if I do that. (stack size?)

Shawn writes:

Having trouble with image heavy pages and fatal errors. Probably due to memory issues. (The JVM won't even run without FHR)
The palm page references an older (more)T2 compatible VM that is no longer available. Perhaps that would help if I could find it.

Dear Sir

I just bought a Tungsten C and was guided to use Opera Mini and given a link to your site.

I followed the steps downloading the Opera Mini software and the Java support from Palm's websphere.

Each time I start Opera Mini, I could not reach beyond the page that says End User Agreement .. If fact that page did not even load. The screen reverts back to the default page showing all the Palm programmes icons.

I wonder if I have not done something correctly.

As you have been a long time user of Tungsten C and Opera Mini, please help me. I suppose you have gone through all the pains getting Opera Mini to work well on you device.

Words 28. December 2006, 00:26

Hi T S Kwek,

Make sure you have the latest version of Opera Mini. There were problems with a couple of issues of version 3 on the Palm which had exactly the problem you describe. The latest version should be ok.

This is the correct link: http://www.operamini.com/download/?dl=pc&man=palm&phone=palm_tungsten_c

If you still have problems, try posting on the OperaMini forum: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/forum.dml?id=111

Post back, if you still have problems. Which language version are you using?

Anonymous 28. December 2006, 01:23

Anonymous writes:

Dear Sir

Thank you very much for your quick response and the links.

I noticed that the language of Opera Mini that I downloaded was English (Intl). I think this caused the problem. The java support was English - US. I have since downloaded Opera Mini - US and it is now working properly, albeit rather slow in connecting and downloading the pages.

Once again, thanks for your help.

Best regards

T S Kwek

Dear Sir

The Opera Mini works wonderfully. Thanks for your guidance.

May I bother you with any situation.

Is it possible to back up the Address Book and Date Book data and any other user created day on the Tungsten C onto the SD card that is inserted.

I have a Palm M515 and lost the stylus recently. All the stores in Vancouver do not carry this item but they have for other Palm models. Do you know which Palm models styli are compatible to the Palm M515?

Thank you for your help.

Words 29. December 2006, 08:48

Hi again,

I don't know about the stylus, but you can use BackupBuddyVFS to backup all your data to the SD card. You can set it to do it daily. It also allows you to restore everything from the card (useful if you ever have to do a hard reset).

Good luck!

This page came up in a search I made earlier regarding the crashing problem that Opera Mini encounters when trying to load a page. The symptom is a brief flash of the End User License Agreement before the application shuts down and either freezes or returns you to the main apps window.

The solution is provided in a GMail tutorial regarding the installed Java. I ran into the same problem until I addressed it this way... I will post it here verbatim in case the link goes down (and for speed)...
"
Please review the following configuration settings on your Treo by visiting Preferences > IBM Java VM:

* Check Use Double Buffering.
* Check Use high resolution coordinates.
* Don't set anything for HTTP Proxy.
* Set Memory maximum to at least 4Mb.
* Set Maximum java thread stack size to 4kb
"

Hope that helps the previous poster and any additional visitors.

I did as marnen suggested (post of 12/28/05) and got opera mini installed. It wouldn't work from the method you described and certainly not from what is writeen on Opera's website - which is to download and sync their advanced version. However, the virtual grafiti area is automatically enabled and I can't close it - is this supposed to happen? I lose a third of the page.

Words 29. May 2007, 18:12

Elliot

The correct way is definiteiy to use the prc on the OperaMini site. The different Palm devices are listed here:
http://www.operamini.com/download/pc/palm/

Not sure about your grafitti problem. I've never used it on the T|C as it comes with a thumb(key)board. It may be worth checking out whether anyone has had this problem on the OperaMini forums

Anonymous 30. May 2007, 13:24

Elliot writes:

Thanks for your speedy reply. Yeah I can't get Opera to work at all from the 'official' method on my T/X. I just get an error message and that's it. Anyway, probably Opera is not designed for the large screen of the T/X but for a squarer screen like that of a cellphone. This would explain why my virtual grafiti area is automatically enabled and I can't lower it. I'll see if anyone else has this problem too in the forums.
Thanks for helping to put opera out there - Blazer was driving me nuts.

I just installed Opera Mini on my Palm T|X and quickly removed it. When I made a wikipedia enquiry, opera switched to Blazer with a blank address. When I directly entered a URL, the editor prevented me from entering a period. (as in the dot in dot com) I am not impressed.

Words 29. October 2007, 07:28

I've never heard of that happening with any Palm user before. OperaMini cannot launch another programme by itself. Sounds like you didn't set up the profiles properly in the JavaVM settings so the TX was defaulting to Blazer when you went to the editor. That's all I can think could have happened.

i'm trying to set this up on my Palm TX and I'm getting an error when starting Opera Mini saying that it cannot find the JVM..

I installed the 2 required files onto my internal PDA RAM as well as the appropriate opera prc file. I even installed the java prefs file to view the preferences on my TX. nothing has helped me get opera to even run

Words 12. December 2007, 07:30

It's a long while since I did the install, but as I recall you need two files for the JavaVM: J9JavaVMMidp20.prc and JavaVMCheck_enUS.prc. You get to the preferences via the standard Palm preference dialogue.

The only other advice I can think of is to check out the Brighthand and Opera Mini forums (see links in my posts from May 2007 and Jan 2007 in the comments above). Hope you get it working.

Hi!

I'm having some problems in the mini opera installation process.

I have a Palm Treo 68O, I did the hot sync, but when I click at Opera, on the main menu, the installation stops, almost at the end and appears a message: "FAILED TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET. Go to operamini.com/help with your desktop browser or contact your service provider fot internet settings."

I hope u can help me.

Words 13. February 2008, 18:28

I take it you've installed the JavaVM application and I wonder if ti is something to do with how the Treo is making the phone connection that's the problem. You should be able to find some help on the OperaMini forum and specific phone compnay settings are here.
