The Hells Angels is a motorcycle
club formed in 1948 in Fontana, California,
where the local chapter remains active.
A successor to the late-1940s club,
the club takes its name from the movie Hell's Angels,
directed by Howard Hughes.
It is estimated to have 2,500 members in 227 chapters,
located in 30 countries.
is a legendary Hebrew liberator,
leader, lawgiver, prophet, and historian.
Moses is considered one of the greatest
figures of the Bible and a murderer
but also back from hell to make good things.
By A/Ibraham
In the Qur'an,the life of Prophet Moses (Arabic: Musa)
is narrated and recounted more than any
other prophet recognized in Islam.
The Qur'an narrates much of Moses' life in relation to God.
The Qur'an and the Bible are similar
on the basic outline of Moses' life.
But one of the distinctive accounts
which is found in the Qur'an but not the Bible,
is the story of Moses and Al Khidr. For Christians,[
Moses -- mentioned more often
in the New Testament than any other
Old Testament figure -- is often a symbol of
the contrast between traditional Judaism
and the teachings of Jesus.
New Testament writers often made comparison
of Jesus' words and deeds with Moses'
in order to explain Jesus' mission.
In Acts 7:39-43,51-53, for example,
the rejection of Moses by the Jews
that worshipped the golden calf is likened
to the rejection of Jesus by the Jews that
continued in traditional Judaism.
Moses also figures into several of Jesus' messages.
When he met the Pharisee Nicodemus
at night in the third chapter of John,
he compares Moses' lifting up of the bronze serpen
t in the wilderness, which any Israelite
could look upon and be healed, to his own lifting up
(by his death and resurrection)
for the people to look upon and be healed.
In the sixth chapter, Jesus responds to the people's
claim that Moses provided them manna
in the wilderness by saying that it was not Moses,
but God, who provided. Calling himself the "bread of life",
Jesus states that he is now provided to feed God's people.
Moses is also regarded as a symbol of the law .
He is presented in all three Gospel accounts
of the Transfiguration in Matthew 17,
Mark 9, and Luke 9, respectively.
Later Christians found numerous other parallels
between the life of Moses and Jesus
to the extent that Jesus was likened to a "second Moses."
For instance, Jesus' escape from the slaughter
by Herod in Bethlehem is compared to Moses'
escape from Pharaoh's designs to kill Hebrew infants.
Such parallels, unlike those mentioned above,
are not pointed out within Scripture.
See the article on typology.
There is a wealth of stories
and additional information about Moses
in the Jewish genreof rabbinical
exegesis known as Midrash,
as well as in the primary works of the Jewish oral law,
the Mishnah and the Talmud.

Horned Moses
Serpent versus SerpentExodus 34:29-35 tells that after meeting
with God the skin of Moses' face became radiant,
frightening the Israelites and leading Moses to wear a veil.
Jonathan Kirsch, in his book Moses: A Life, thought that,
since he subsequently had to wear a veil to hide it,
Moses' face was disfigured by a sort of "divine radiation burn".This story has led to
one longstanding tradition that Moses grew horns.
This is derived from a mistranslation
of the Hebrew phrase "karnu panav" קרנו פניו.
The root קרן may be read as either "horn" or "ray",
as in "ray of light". "Panav" פניו translates as "his face".If interpreted correctly those
two words form an expression which means
that he was enlightened, and many rabbinical
studies explain that the knowledge that
was revealed to him made his face metaphorically
shine with enlightenment, and not that it
suddenly sported a pair of horns. The Septuagint properly translates
the Hebrew word קרן as δεδοξασται,
'was glorified', but Jerome translated it as cornuta,
'horned', and it was the latter image
that became the more popular.
This tradition survived from the first centuries
well into the Renaissance. Many artists,
including Michelangelo in a famed sculpture,
depicted Moses with horns.Moses is an Egyptian name
-element meaning "-gave birth to him" or
"-formed him" and was usually combined
with a theophoric element, as in "Ramose"
which had the meaning "child of Ra" or "Ra formed him".
"Moshe" is a Hebrew word (meaning "one who draws water").
The Bible asserts that this is the origin
of the name because Moses was "drawn out"
of the water by the Egyptian princess.
It could also be a reference to his role
in leading the Israelites out of Egypt.
It has been traditionally assumed
that Moses received from God and subsequently
transcribed all, or almost all, of the Torah,
and this is still the view of most
fundamentalist Christians and most
of Orthodox Judaism. However, many liberal scholars,
following the practice of higher criticism
have become convinced that this work was
edited together from several earlier sources. Some skeptical historians, generally called
"Biblical minimalists", suggest that Moses
never actually existed, and that the Exodus is not historical.
On the other hand, historical records are
so fragmentary that extra-Biblical records
of Moses may have been long lost. For example,
if the Exodus occurred during
the end of the Hyksos-era in Egypt (16th century BCE),
as some scholars believe,
then any Hyksos records of Moses would have been
deliberately destroyed by victorious Egyptians
as they drove the Hyksos out of Egypt.
Destruction of unfavorable records
by unsympathetic Pharaohs, and even mass obliteration
of cartouches from monuments, is known
to have occurred at several epochs in Ancient Egyptian history.
Several professors of archaeology
claim that many stories in the Old Testament,
including important chronicles about Moses, Solomon,
and others, were actually made up for
the first time by scribes hired by King Josiah
(7th century BCE) in order to rationalize
monotheistic belief in Yahweh.Conflicting with the sources cited in Halley,
others claim there is no such surviving
written records from Egypt, Assyria, etc.,
referring to the stories of the Bible
or its main characters before ca. 850 BCE.Traditionalists point out that many
of the details of the Pentateuch are consistent
with the time period, such as the price
of a slave (30 shekels as opposed
to around 60 at the time of the Babylonian captivity),
the practice of blood covenants and the discovery
of what some claim are 'chariot wheels'
on the bottom of the Red Sea.
Skeptics view most of these as inconclusive or
otherwise inconsequential and point out that
the depth of the Red Sea exceeds that
of Arizona's Grand Canyon.Known extra-Biblical references to Moses
date from many centuries after his supposed lifetime,
and contain significant departures from the Biblical account.
In addition to the Judeo-Roman historians
Flavius Josephus and Philo,
a number of gentile historians including
Polyhistor, Manetho and Tacitus make reference to him.
The extent to which any of these accounts
rely on earlier sources is unknown.According to the historian Flavius Josephus,
Moses led the Egyptians in a campaign against
invading Ethiopians and routed them.
While Moses was besieging the city, Tharbis,
the daughter of the Ethiopian king,
fell in love with Moses and wished to marry him.
He agreed to do so if she would procure the deliverance
of the city into his power. She did so immediately,
and Moses promptly married her.
This marriage is also mentioned in Numbers 12:1
(Cushite meant Ethiopian; Zipporah was Midianite,
definitely not Ethiopian).
The account of this expedition is possibly
also mentioned by Irenaeus, and the event
would explain why St. Stephan
refers to Moses as "mighty in his words
and in his deeds" before Moses slayed the Egyptian.
Moses also features prominently
in later traditions such as the Midrash,
Mishna and Qur'an; these texts draw
on and diverge from Biblical accounts.
See the article on The Bible and history.
Moses in Strabo
The following excerpt comes
from the Roman historian Strabo (c. 24 CE):
34 As for Judaea, its western extremities
towards Casius are occupied by the Idumaeans
and by the lake.
The Idumaeans are Nabataeans, but owing to a
sedition they were banished from there,
joined the Judaeans, and shared in the same
customs with them. The greater part of the
region near the sea is occupied by Lake Sirbonis
and by the country continuous with the lake as far
as Jerusalem; for this city is also near the sea; for,
as I have already said, it is visible from the seaport of Iopê.
This region lies towards the north; and
it is inhabited in general, as is each place in particular,
by mixed stocks of people from Aegyptian and Arabian and Phoenician tribes;
for such are those who occupy Galilee and Hiericus
and Philadelphia and Samaria,
which last Herod surnamed Sebastê.
But though the inhabitants mixed up thus,
the most prevalent of the accredited reports
in regard to the temple at Jerusalem represents
the ancestors of the present Judaeans,
as they are called, as Aegyptians.
35 Moses, namely, was one of the Aegyptian priests,
and held a part of Lower Aegypt, as it is called,
but he went away from there to Judaea,
since he was displeased with the state of affairs there,
and was accompanied by many people
who worshipped the Divine Being.
For he says, and taught, that the Aegyptians
were mistaken in representing the Divine Being
by the images of beasts and cattle,
as were also the Libyans; and that the Greeks
were also wrong in modelling gods in human form;
for, according to him, God is this one
thing alone that encompasses us all and encompasses
land and sea — the thing which we call heaven,
or universe, or the nature of all that exists.
What man, then, if he has sense, could be bold
enough to fabricate an image of God resembling
any creature amongst us? Nay, people
should leave off all image-carving, and,
setting apart a sacred precinct and a worthy sanctuary,
should worship God without an image; and people who have
good dreams should sleep in the sanctuary,
not only themselves on their own behalf,
but also others for the rest of the people;
and those who live self-restrained and righteous
lives should always expect some blessing or gift or sign from God,
but no other should expect them.
36 Now Moses, saying things of this kind, persuaded
not a few thoughtful men and led them away
to this place where the settlement of Jerusalem now is;
and he easily took possession of the place,
since it was not a place that would be looked
on with envy, nor yet one for which anyone
would make a serious fight; for it is rocky, and,
although it itself is well supplied with water,
its surrounding territory is barren and waterless,
and the part of the territory within a radius
of sixty stadia is also rocky beneath the surface.
At the same time Moses, instead of using arms,
put forward as defence his sacrifices and his Divine Being,
being resolved to seek a seat of worship
for Him and promising to deliver to the people
a kind of worship and a kind of ritual which
would not oppress those who adopted
them either with expenses or with divine obsessions
or with other absurd troubles.
Now Moses enjoyed fair repute with these people,
and organised no ordinary kind of government,
since the peoples all round, one and all, came over to him,
because of his dealings with them and
of the prospects he held out to them.
Moses in Tacitus
The Roman historian Tacitus (ca. 100 CE)
mentions several possible origins of
the Jews that were taught by those of his time.
As I am about to relate the last days of
a famous city, it seems appropriate
to throw some light on its origin.
Some say that the Jews were fugitives from the island of Crete,
who settled on the nearest coast of Africa about
the time when Saturn was driven from
his throne by the power of Jupiter.
Evidence of this is sought in the name.
There is a famous mountain in Crete called Ida;
the neighbouring tribe, the Idaei,
came to be called Judaei by
a barbarous lengthening of the national name.
Others assert that in the reign of
Isis the overflowing population of Egypt,
led by Hierosolymus and Judas, discharged
itself into the neighbouring countries.
Many, again, say that they were a race of Ethiopian origin,
who in the time of king Cepheus were
driven by fear and hatred of their neighbours
to seek a new dwelling-place. Others describe
them as an Assyrian horde who, not having sufficient territory,
took possession of part of Egypt,
and founded cities of their own in
what is called the Hebrew country,
lying on the borders of Syria.
Others, again, assign a very distinguished origin
to the Jews, alleging that they were the Solymi,
a nation celebrated in the poems of Homer,
who called the city which they founded Hierosolyma
after their own name.
Most writers, however, agree in stating that
once a disease, which horribly disfigured the body,
broke out over Egypt; that king Bocchoris,
seeking a remedy, consulted the oracle of Hammon,
and was bidden to cleanse his realm, and to convey
into some foreign land this race detested by the gods.
The people, who had been collected after diligent search,
finding themselves left in a desert, sat for
the most part in a stupor of grief, till one of the exiles,
Mo(y)ses by name, warned them not to look
for any relief from God or man, forsaken
as they were of both, but to trust to themselves,
taking for their heaven-sent leader that man who should
first help them to be quit of their present misery.
They agreed, and in utter ignorance began to advance at random.
Nothing, however, distressed them so much
as the scarcity of water, and they had sunk
ready to perish in all directions over the plain,
when a herd of wild asses was seen to retire from
their pasture to a rock shaded by trees.
Mo(y)ses followed them, and, guided
by the appearance of a grassy spot,
discovered an abundant spring of water.
This furnished relief. After a continuous journey for six days,
on the seventh they possessed themselves of a country,
from which they expelled the inhabitants,
and in which they founded a city and a temple.
Date of the Exodus
Dating the Exodus has also proved challenging.
Views include:
it occurred around the end of the Hyksos
era (1648 - 1540 BCE), as expressed above;
it occurred about 1400 BCE, since the Amarna letters,
written ca. forty years later to Pharaohs Amenhotep III
and Amenhotep IV (Akhenaten) indicate that
Canaan was being invaded by the "Habiru"
— whom some scholars in the 1950's to 1970's
interpret to mean "Hebrews". However, the Hebrews Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob are also recorded
to have conducted military activities in Canaan
some centuries before the Exodus.
Many scholars today view the Hapiru as members of a social,
rather than a tribal, underclass of people
who existed throughout the Ancient Near East, not just Egypt.
it occurred during the 13th century BCE,
as the pharaoh during most of that time, Rameses II,
is commonly considered to be a pharaoh with whom Moses squabbled
- either as the 'Pharaoh of the Exodus' himself, or the preceding
'Pharaoh of the Oppression', who is said
to have commissioned the Hebrews to "(build)
for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses."
These cities are known to have been built
under both Seti(!?) I and Rameses II,
thus possibly making his successor Merneptah
the 'Pharaoh of the Exodus.'
This is considered plausible by those
who view the famed Year 5 (ca. 1208 BCE),
Merneptah Stele's claim that "Israel is wasted,
bare of seed", as pure propaganda to cover
up this king's own loss of an army in the Red sea.
Taken at face value, however, the primary intent
of the stela was clearly to commemorate Merneptah's
victory over the Libyans and their Sea People allies.
The reference to Canaan occurs only in the final lines
of the document where Israel is mentioned after
the city states of Ashkelon, Gezer and Yanoam
perhaps to signal Merneptah's disdain or contempt
for this new entity.
In Exodus, the Pharaoh of the Exodus
did not cross into Canaan since his Army was
destroyed at the Red Sea.
Hence, the traditional view that Ramesses II
was the Pharaoh of either the Oppression
or the Exodus is affirmed by the basic contents
of the Merneptah Stele. Under this scenario,
the Israelites would have been a nation without
a state of their own who existed on the fringes
of Canaan in Year 5 of Merneptah. This is suggested
by the determinative sign written in the stela
for Israel--"a throw stick plus a man and a woman
over the three vertical plural lines"--which was
"typically used by the Egyptians to signify
nomadic groups or peoples without a fixed city-state,"
such as the Hebrew's previous life in Goshen.
A remoter possibility is that the line "wasted,
bare of seed" refers to the time when the infants
of Israel are said to have been thrown into
the Nile when Moses was born.
A more recent and controversial view places
Moses as a noble in the court of
the Pharaoh Akhenaten (See below).
Many scholars from Sigmund Freud
to Joseph Campbell suggest that Moses
may have fled Egypt after Akhenaten's death (ca. 1334 BCE)
when much of the pharaoh's monotheistic
reforms were being violently reversed.
The principal ideas behind this theory are:
the monotheistic religion of Akhenaten
being a possible predecessor to Moses' monotheism,
and a contemporaneous collection of "Amarna Letters"
written by nobles to Akhenaten
(Amarna was Akhenaten's capital city)
which describe raiding bands of "Habiru"
attacking the Egyptian territories in Mesopotamia.
Finally, there is the challenge
of interpreting the many miracles in the Moses story.
Most of them are simply dismissed by scholars as legends,
but some can be explained. For example,
some of the plagues strongly resemble exaggerated
versions of actual pestilences common
in the ancient world (see The Ten Plagues),
the famous Red Sea crossing may have been a marsh
(the "Reed Sea") through which
the Egyptian chariots could not penetrate,
the manna which God bestowed on the hungry Israelites
may have been the secretion of the hammada shrub,
and the swallowing of Korah (Numbers 16)
could have been an earthquake.
There is also a psychoanalytical
interpretation of Moses' life, put forward
by Sigmund Freud in his last book, Moses and Monotheism,
in 1937.
Freud postulated that Moses was an Egyptian nobleman
who adhered to the monotheism of Akhenaten.
Freud also believed that Moses was murdered
in the wilderness, producing a collective sense
of patricidal guilt which has been
at the heart of Judaism ever since.
"Judaism had been a religion of the father,
Christianity became a religion of the son," he wrote.
Opponents of this view point to the
fact that the religion of the Torah seems very different
to Atenism in everything except the central
feature of devotion to a single god.

The Higher Circles
The powers of ordinary men are circumscribed
by the everyday worlds in which they live,
yet even in these rounds of job, family,
and neighborhood they often seem driven
by forces they can neither understand nor govern.
‘Great changes’ are beyond their control,
but affect their conduct and outlook none the less.
The very framework of modern society confines
them to projects not their own, but from every side,
such changes now press upon the men and
women of the mass society, who accordingly feel
that they are without purpose in an epoch
in which they are without power.
But not all men are in this sense ordinary.
As the means of information and of power are centralized,
some men come to occupy positions in American society
from which they can look down upon, so to speak,
and by their decisions mightily affect,
the everyday worlds of ordinary men and women.
They are not made by their jobs; they set up
and break down jobs for thousands of others;
they are not confined by simple family responsibilities;
they can escape. They may live in many hotels and houses,
but they are bound by no one community.
They need not merely ‘meet the demands of the day
and hour’; in some part, they create these demands,
and cause others to meet them. Whether or
not they profess their power, their technical
and political experience of it far transcends
that of the underlying population.
What Jacob Burckhardt said of ‘great men,’
most Americans might well say of their elite:
‘They are all that we are not.”
The power elite is composed of men
whose positions enable them to transcend
the ordinary environments of ordinary men and women;
they are in positions to make decisions having major consequences.
Whether they do or do not make such decisions is
less important than the fact that they do occupy
such pivotal positions: their failure to act,
their failure to make decisions, is in itself
an act that is often of greater consequence
than the decisions they do make.
For they are in command of the major hierarchies
and organisations of modern society.
They rule the big corporations.
They run the machinery of the state
and claim its prerogatives.
They direct the military establishment.
They occupy the strategic command posts of the social structure,
in which are now centered the effective means
of the power and the wealth and the celebrity which they enjoy.
The power elite are not solitary rulers.
Advisers and consultants, spokesmen and
opinion-makers are often the captains
of their higher thought and decision.
Immediately below the elite are the professional
politicians of the middle levels of power,
in the Congress and in the pressure groups,
as well as the new and old upper classes
of town and city and region. Mingling with them,
in curious ways which we shall explore,
are those professional celebrities
who live by being continually displayed but are never,
so long as they remain celebrities, displayed enough.
If such celebrities are not at the head of
any dominating hierarchy, they do often have
the power to distract the attention of the public
or afford sensations to the masses, or, more directly,
to gain the ear of those who do occupy positions of direct power.
More or less unattached, as critics of morality
and technicians of power, as spokesman of God
and creators of mass sensibility, such celebrities
and consultants are part of the immediate scene in
which the drama of the elite is enacted.
But that drama itself is centered in the command posts
of the major institutional hierarchies.... See in the early 1950`s
after WWIIThe Myth and Legends
The myth and legends surrounding the military
lineage of the Hells Angels(Vietnam Veterans,WW Veterans,
Iraq Veterans,etc....)
Motorcycle Club has, for decades,
been cited as being from former members of
the Hell's Angels Bomber B-17 Group from World War II.
This myth has been
aided by incorrect reporting by authors
who deemed it appropriate to align the
Hells Angels Motorcycle Club (HAMC)
with ex-service members returning from a
war where excitement and adventure
had become their lifestyle. Authors and
newspaper correspondents, from a wide assortment
of daily, weekly and other
periodicals have made statements, not founded in fact.
It has been stated that
these former servicemen were alleged to have been drunkards,
military misfits,
and generally speaking substandard soldiers
that would not adjust to a return
to a peacetime environment.
If any person, regardless of their association,
considered the content of the statements
and inferences made, they would
find these to lack any rational thought
or concern for truthful reporting.
A historical review of the exploits
and accomplishments of the implied Bomber Group,
303rd Bombardment Groups (Heavy) (303rd)
European Theater of Operations (ETO)
show's that this bomber unit did not tolerate
malcontents, drunken pilots or aircrews.
Such individuals, had they existed,
would have seriously hindered the effectiveness
of combat operations and would have been
dealt with harshly and promptly.
Documented records of the 303rd can be found
in "Might in Flight",
Daily Diary of the Eighth Air Force's Hell's Angels,
303rd Bombardment Group (H), by Harry D. Gobrecht,
LtCol, USAF (Ret).
One of the 303rd's most famous B-17's serial number
#41-24577, commanded by then Captain Irl Baldwin,
was named "Hell's Angels". This aircraft
was unnamed until it's fourth or fifth mission.
The crew decided to adopt the name "Hell's Angels"
after the 1927 "Hell's Angels" WWI fictional
Fighter Squadron movie by Howard Hughes.
On 13 May 1943 the 303rd's B-17F "Hell's Angels"
became the first 8th Air Force B-17 to complete 25 combat missions.
This feat has wrongly been credited to
the"Memphis Belle" B-17 including
the 1943 and 1990 "Memphis Belle" movies.
The "Memphis Belle" B-17 was the first to complete
25 missions and return to the USA. "Hell's Angels"
continued to fly combat missions until 13 December 1943,
when she completed 48 combat missions it was retired from combat.
Shortly thereafter she was flown to the USA,
rejoined by members of the Capt Baldwin crew,
went on a morale boosting tour of war production plants.
"Hell's Angels" B-17F. serial number #41-24577 was dismantled,
for scrap, in 1947. On 7 January 1944,
by a vote of group and squadron commanders,
"Hell's Angels" became the name of
the 303rd with "Might in Flight" being
retained as the Group motto.
Facts, which have been undeniably proven,
show that the 303rd "Hell's Angels" B-17F was only
flown by highly dedicated, motivated and mission oriented airmen.
They were not malcontents and did not report
for mission in a drunken state. Crew pilot and commander,
Capt Irl Baldwin, completed a stellar military career,
retired as a LtCol, and was awarded numerous valorous
and meritorious citations.
Ursula von den Leyen
Records show that the 303rd became
one of the 8th Air Forces best Bomb Groups.
It operated from Station 107, Molesworth,
Huntingdonshire, England from 12 September 1942
until 11 June 1945. During this time the Group
flew an 8th Air Force record 364 combat missions,
10,721 sorties and dropped 26,346 tons of bombs
on enemy targets. The 303rd is credited with
664 enemy aircraft destroyed, probably destroyed or damaged.
They sustained 1,748 personnel casualties and
lost 210 B-17's on combat missions.
The 303rd was the first 8th Air Force Bomb Group
to complete 25, 50, 75, 200 and 300 combat missions.
With this record doesn't it seem strange that
the post war media, more than likely influenced
by a law enforcement community biased against the HAMC.
Only overzealous sensationalistic reporters,
would publish unreliable and malicious comments
about 303rd crewmen or any other group, to include HAMC.
These tainted reports represent a disservice
to journalists that are professional
in the execution of their craft.
From available historical information at HAMC Berdoo
and extensive research by the 303rd reveals
that no lineage exists between the HAMC and
the 303rd other than both organizations having the same name.
HAMC has copyrighted the name Hells Angels
(in any form of spelling) in the US and Internationally,
along with all variations of the "Deathshead" insignia of HAMC.
These trademarks & copyrights
are aggressively protected by HAMC, Inc.
The name Hell's Angels was adopted
by no less that twelve B-17?s throughout WWII,
from a assortment of organizations, additionally
it was adopted by a B-26 Medium Bomber squadron,
a United States Marine Corps fighter squadron and even on
a P-38 Lightning fighter.
Ursula von den Leyen
The former Squadron Leader
of the 3rd Pursuit Squadron "Hell's Angels"
American Volunteer Group (AVG), Arvid Olsen,
was the only known person with specific military
lineage to an actual unit which bore
the name Hell's Angels that was affiliated
with the foundation of the HAMC, which occurred in Fontana,
California in March 1948. Arvid Olsen was
an associate of the founders of the HAMC,
he never attempted to or became a member of HAMC.
Ursula von den Leyen
The AVG, or more famously
known "The Flying Tigers" (the name is credited
to a United Press correspondent named McGrath
for a article written on 26 December 1941)
were a secret United States military operational entity,
authorized and approved by then
President Franklin D. Roosewelt, on 23 December 1940,
under conditions of a SECRET Letter of Approval:
refer to official file 150, FDR Library, Memoranda 1941.
The secret approval was only recently
declassified in December 1991, after 50 years,
when the AVG was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.
Additionally the pilots of the AVG were awarded
Distinguished Flying Crosses. Ground crew personnel
of the AVG were awarded Bronze Star Medals.
After all those years the AVG veterans,
that were still alive, received Veterans
status from a grateful nation!
This acknowledgment seems more like
an after thought to an intentional oversight,
on the part of the government.
As part of this covert operation,
which had been requested by Claire Lee Chennault
( a former USAAC pilot instructor and veteran
of the 94th "Hat in the Ring" squadron during WWI)
on behalf of Chaing Kai-Shek and the Chinese government,
who had been at war with the Empire of Japan since 1937.
The AVG were to be equipped, organized and deployed, in China,
against the Empire of Japan. The AVG received 100 P-40
fighter aircraft. The P-40's were diverted from a shipment
to England. The personnel were recruited from active
branches of the War Department: the Army, Navy and Marine Corps.
Pilots, maintenance, communications, clerical
and medical personnel were secretly recruited
from active duty units.
All documentation, equipment and personnel transfers
were processed through and by
the Central Aircraft Manufacturing Company (CAMCO),
as approved by the US Government.
Nothing could then be traced to the United States government,
which was not yet in conflict with the Empire of Japan.
Chaing Kai-Shek appointed Chennault Commander of the AVG.
Ursula von den Leyen
The AVG was divided into four elements:
a headquarters squadron and three (3) fighter squadrons.
Each squadron selected their respective name,
which was the custom of the time for military aviation units.
The First Pursuit Squadron (1PS) became the Adam & Eve's.
The Second Pursuit Squadron (2PS) became the Panda Bears.
Chuck Older, Ken Jernstedt, Tom Haywood and Ed Overend,
all former USMC pilots, selected the name "Hell's Angels"
for the Third Pursuit Squadron (3PS).
Of note is that Charles 'Chuck' Older,
became a judge and presided over the trial of Charles Manson.
Ken Jernstedt became a US Senator.
After deactivation of the AVG Ed Overend
returned to the USMC where he commanded VMF-321,
a US Marine Corps fighter Squadron,
which he named "Hell's Angels" and adopted
the "Lady" insignia of the 3PS AVG.
Squadron Leader Olsen was not involved
in that name selection, however he immediately
agreed with the recommendation.
The Tiger Shark motif on the AVG P-40 aircraft
was the idea of (3PS) Hell's Angels
Flight Leader Erik Shilling and (1PS)
Adam & Eve Vice Squadron Leader Charles Bond,
when they found a British magazine
with photographs of an RAAF P-40 in desert camouflage.
When the two took the idea to Chennault
he wanted the entire Group to adopt the motif.
Even today Shilling and Bond claim first
for idea and application of the Tiger Shark
paint job on the P-40's of the AVG.
Erik Shilling actually painted his P-40 first,
as Bond had gone off base to acquire the paint,
whereas Shilling got paint on the base
from Chinese personnel that were painting
the Chinese Air Force insignia on the P-40's.
Ursula von den Leyen
Each of the squadrons,
now with an approved name, designed
their respective squadron insignia.
The Hell's Angels decided on a red colored
silhouette of a very shapely female with
halo and wings outlined in white.
This design originated with 3PS crew chief Stan Regis
in late November or December 1941.
Each Hell´s Angels pilot had his own
"Lady" painted on his individual aircraft,
subsequently each "Lady" had her own personality.
Yet the colors of red on white was the standard
for the entire squadron. This same motif and insignia
is used today by active United States Army,
Marine Corps and Air Force squadrons,
additionally a fighter squadron of the Israeli Air Force.
During the seven month combat operations of
the AVG this unit acquired a record of
297 Japanese aircraft destroyed, as confirmed
by British and Chinese Intelligence.
Other sources have placed the total Japanese aircraft
destruction, caused by the AVG, at well over 600 to 900,
including aircraft destroyed
on the ground during strafing operations.
AVG losses were 4 pilots killed in air combat,
7 killed by ground fire, 3 died as a result
of Japanese bombing while they were
on the ground and 1 missing in action presumed dead.
That reflects an AVG to Japanese kill ratio of 50 to 1,
a record that has never been equaled.
Chennault reviewed official Japanese war records,
after the war.
The Japanese reported the destruction of 544 AVG aircraft.
Of note was the fact that at no time did the AVG
possessed more than 100 aircraft in their unit.
The AVG was disbanded on 4 July 1942,
at which time few accepted returning into
the US Army Air Force, most optioned to return
to the US where they returned to active service
or other war efforts.
The reason many refused immediate return to active service,
in China, was the manner by which Brigadier General Bissell,
USAAF, presented the option to them.
Bissell had been a long time adversary
of Chennault and the Flying Tigers. Chennault,
who had accepted return to active military service,
prior to the deactivation of the AVG,
at the rank of Brigadier General continued
to command the 14th Air Force in the China Burma Theater (CBT).
The 14th Air Force all referred to themselves as "Flying Tigers",
even though the real "Flying Tigers"
had been deactivated on 4 July 1942
General Chennault was forced into
retirement immediately prior to the Japanese surrender.
At the official surrender ceremony, aboard the USS Missouri,
General of the Army Douglas MacArthur asked,
"Where's Chennault"? As a final insult General Chennault,
founder and commander of the AVG,
who had fought the Japanese Empire since 1937
wasn't even permitted to be present
at the official end of hostilities,
of which he had participated in for 8 years,
unlike the 4 years of participation
by other US officials at that ceremony.
To answer the question
of lineage between HAMC and a military organization
is that Arvid Olsen, "Flying Tigers" Hell's Angels
squadron gave the idea of the name
to the actual founders of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club,
in Fontana, California. The selection of our colors,
red on white, is a result of the association
of Olsen with the HAMC founders, like the insignia
of the 3PS "Hell's Angels". The insignia of the HAMC,
our copyrighted Deathshead can also be traced
to two variant insignia designs,
the 85th Fighter Squadron and the 552nd Medium Bomber Squadron.
Frank Sadliek, past president of the San Francisco Chapter, HAMC,
designed the official "Deathshead" insignia.
Arvid Olsen died 16 May 1974 in Point Clear, Alabama.
