New Year, New Possibilities.

, ,

And so I'm back again, from a small break in blogging. The biggest event since last time would probably be New Year's. I originally planned on spending the night in Stockholm, but since my friends abandoned be in various ways (not really abandoned me, but got other plans ; ) I in an incredibly spontaneous act went to Gothenburg to celebrate the new year together with Rickard and Adeline.

I went back to Stockholm three days after that, and then went straight for Västerås. Mathieu's here and the weather's been quite nice during the week, otherwise I would've went straight back for Gävle. I made my longest flight so far (3.3 hours and 333nm) with success, and now I'm sitting here dreading tomorrow when my final term starts.

Six months left, six months left, six months left...
(until graduation)

Oh well, I'm off again. I'll try to keep up the blogging here in the future, I promise : )

Keeping up appearences.

, ,

It's been ages since my last post now. School's been in the way, as well as some other stuff. Anyways.

I've flown quite a lot, and can now proudly announce that I have passed 100 airborn hours ! It's a great milestone, and now I only have about 50 hours of cross country before I can make a checkride and probably receive my certificate. What seemed so far away just a year ago suddenly feels very close.
As a matter of fact, I just got home from a cross country navigation. I went from here (Västerås) to the city of Borlänge before I went to Gävle to have lunch with a friend who was following in another aircraft. We were a bit concerned about the wind when we departed since it was quite hard in the north. The forecasts said it would chill down a bit though, which was the case.

I also received around 100 Opera Mini posters today which I'm now spreading. Almost half the stack is gone already, and people I've talked to all seem very positive to it. I love the new 3.0 version, seems a lot faster and the photo blogging feature is awesome. You can get it from www.operamini.com.

Bird strike.

, ,

I experienced a very strange thing on my solo flight today. I was to practice precision landings, so I stayed in the traffic pattern. Everything went good, until a suicidal bird decided to use me to end his life. Just during flare (that’s right before the wheels touched the ground) on my full- stop landing the bird appeared out of nothing and smashed right into the propeller.

It was immediately chopped into pieces, and was slung onto the ground before it was crushed again under my left wheel. Very scary. I was given clearance for taxi to the apron by the tower, and I thought I should tell them about the incident.

The radio conversation went something like this:

Me: “Uumm.. tower from Sierra Papa Lima. You have a... chopped bird on the runway.”
TWR: “Uummm… Sierra Papa Lima, roger that. Are you ok?”
Me: ”Yeah, I’m fine. The bird’s a bit worse though I imagine.”
TWR: “Yeah right… Uuumm, was it big?”
Me: “Well, bigger than a sparrow, smaller than a swan. Somewhere in between.”
TWR: “Roger that. We’ll… take care of that. Continue taxi to the apron.”
Me: “Continue taxi, Sierra Papa Lima.”

Once I got back I made a thorough inspection, but there were (amazingly) no bigger remains of the poor thing on the aircraft.

So that’s me engaging in suicidal activities. R.I.P Birdie.
