Something to do in the city

Alternative Theater Festival

, , ,

In downtown Queretaro there is the International Alternative Theater Festival, a tradition in the city to present "alternative" forms of art in the form of plays, could be short or long.

Although alternative theater can be considered by many "non-understandable" I think is like painting, what you understand, what it makes you feel that is correct, no matter what feeling it cause.

I saw a small play of a colombian couple and a monologue of a mexican girl.

A lot of people where present, which gave me hope, that art is blossoming in the city.

Theater: Departamento de Soltero

, , , ...

Today I went to downtown historic disctrict, to see some theater, there is the alternative theater international festival, but also I went to a local theater "La Casona del Árbol" a small theater to see the play "Departamento de Soltero" (Single guy apartment) a comedy of a divorced college professor who has a gay friend that just fight with his partner at a disguise party (the gay guy is dressed as a priest) the guy that fix everything in the apartment building, the wife of mister fix it, a college student who has a crush on her professor so she go to his place to "read" books, and a friend of the professor who happends to be a young twenty something girl who just broke up with his boyfriend (whom she used to life with), I almost forgot, the crazy hot sister of the profesor who wants sex no mater what or with whom.

So the comedy elements are very obvious, the story is not very original, the professor starts to lie to everybody and trying ot keep everybody hidden to the others, except his gay friend who is helping him, pretending to be a priest.

I spent good time laughing, which made the play worth, the actors are good at improving their act and their mistakes to made the play funnier, but still is not the smartest of the humor and has a character that is worthless (the professor sister) whose only part in the play is trying to have sex with the gay friend.

I like that they used spanish names, or real ones, in other plays they tend to use names like "John" instead of Juan, talking about "5th avenue" instead of "Av. Zaragoza" making reference that the play took place in some place like NY, but in this play they made reference to local stuff, making it obvious that it happend in Queretaro, which helps to identify with the play.

The price of the tickets is $120.00 pesos ($12.00 usd) which is fair, not cheap, not expensive, in the entrance of the theater they claim to accept credit card, which they don't. In the theater entrance there is a bar (that you need to cross to reach your seat) called "Back Stage" which is a good place to spent some time before the play starts or after it ends.

If you want some fun, it is worth and recommended, you will have a good time.

1984

, ,

Big Brother 24 years late, but arrived after all, the safest city in Mexico, the cleanest and the one with the best GDP per capita in the country now has a more than 100 eyes to watch the citizens.

First it was Google Earth existence that show me that 1984 was very real, if that service was available freely to everybody, then probably the big armies of the world had some live feed from satellites.

Now the city of Queretaro with a gigantic observation center they can watch every move, according to the big brother, they can ensure more the city and answer faster to 066 calls (Mexican 911) also act without a call. This sound very nice, but it is kind of frightening.

Alternative Art

, , ,

From August 8th to the 10th there will take place the "Festival Internacional Alternativo de Artes Escénicas Querétaro 2008" or "International Alternative Scenic Arts Festival Queretaro 2008"

Is a festival where mix of theater and other forms or art and entertainment like circus or "Lucha Libre" or any other kind of theater takes place in all the venues of the city, including public plazas, gardens, museums, most of the events are free.

Some plays you may find them weird, but interesting, trying to understand the author's pourpose.

The last month (july) from 15 to 19 it took place the "Sixth National Show of Young Theater" so there is a lot in the area coming to town.

If you are arround, you can take a moment of the day a see a play.

Queretaro has a miss

, ,

The new Miss Queretaro was chosen, the name in mexico is "Nuestra Belleza Queretaro" (Our beauty Queretaro) the ceremony was in San Gil, which is like in between the two largest cities of the state, Santiago de Queretaro (capital) and San Juan del Río, probably to create a sense that not all of the events of the state takes place in the capital, (which is home of 70% of the state population)

The new miss studies architecture (well after this she maybe stop studying) in my college, the actual Miss Mexico (the best body in Miss Universe peugeant) also studyed in my college. Too bad I graduate, I think more beautiful girls are arriving there.

What a lovely day

, ,

Today we had a great looking day, all clouds, not a single ray of sun, so nice, cool and rainy. I love this weather, my friends from other countries like Canada, Switzerland and England tell me I'm crazy, but really it is great, this kind of weather is rare here, even in winter, you can count the cloudy days with your fingers, all year here is sun and a blue sky. ALL YEAR! it can be like 0°C but with sunny sky, even rain with SUN c'mon!.

But today was calm, bright colors and cloudy skies, so nice.

Transit Downtown

, ,

Queretaro's downtown is one of the most active in Mexico, in Mexico dowtowns are for work and goverment issues only, and people that goes to spend time in a downtown usually goes to church, well that is not the case in Queretaro, were downtown is very active full of entertaining options.

In the downtown (historic distric mainly) you will find restaurants from all styles, the very mexican traditional, mexican exclusive, international, italian (we love italian), salads, french, cajun, indian, japanese, and so on. Also there are a lot of night time places, bars, lounge places, nightclubs, band stand, comedy clubs, theaters, and there are shows on the public plazas and gardens, also art galeries, and museums.

The point of meeting is the main plaza, the "Jardin de los Perritos" (little dogs garden) officialy named "Plaza de Armas" were the state goverment is located, from here you can walk to 5 de mayo (bar street and some theater), Libertad st (art galleries and restaurants), stay on the plaza (café and restaurants), 16 de septiembre (restaurants, theater, bars, ice cream and stores) and near that is Independencia St. where there are also theater and restaurants.

From thursday to sunday the historic district is a traffic jam, that is why I always parked near it and walk, it is faster, by the way the jam is normal in the historic district (small streets from the 1600's to the 1800's where horses and foot where the main transportation system)

This is how it looks (the streets full of cars looking for a space to park), and tons of walking pedestrians, it can take you even two hours to park the car, so be like me and park in the first space and walk.

Foreigners Festival

, , ,

The people from other countries that live in Queretaro organized, with help of local goverment, a festival of two days, with music, food, clothing and many other stuff that define their cultures. They wanted to show the Queretanos a bit of their home lands.

According to the organizers there where 33 nations represented in the event (more than I expected).

I like this kind of events because it helps to understand our neighbors better also to understand the world.

The biggest communities:

- Spain
- USA
- France
- Italy
- Korea (south)
- Chinese
- Germany

That explains why there are consulates of Spain (and Vasque country), France, Italy and Germany in the city, being so close to Mexico City.

Paint your frog

, , ,

Well the FrogArt parade in Queretaro is starting another year, there are frogs and sofas, you have to creat art based in a frog or a sofa that will be given to you to work.
