Mineral de Pozos

, , , ...

I went with my friends to Mineral de Pozos in the neghboring state of Guanajuato, this small town is located at 1 hour from Queretaro, we went to visit the old mineral haciendas, where minning production took place a long ago (in times of the viceroyalty), this haciendas are all in ruins, which makes them very special, and dangerous (there are signs warning of the mines, holes, and other stuff) in one of this old ruin haciendas we played gotcha (paintball) incredible scenary for the activity.

Playing paintball in a ruined hacienda from the 1700's is an incredible experience, a lot of place to hide and shoot. Since I'm very tall, 1.90 (like 6ft) I was an easy target, but still my team won, it was very competitive. In the find the treasure game I found it, but a clever maneuver from other team, they where hidding next to the commander (the guy we had to give the treasure in order to win) I thougt I was winning... My teammate was ocuppy covering me from other guys. Still I'm proud of being the one who almost got it, I was so near!

Also the haciendas are very impresive, since where constructed in hills, incredible view.

Totally worth it.

Holy week and easter

, , , ...

Today is the last day of the celebrations of Holy Week and Easter, this year I went to my mother's home town, Salvatierra (in Guanajuato state) to visit the seven houses on thursday.

Last supper representation in a church in Salvatierra.

Crowded church in Salvatierra.

On friday, I went downtown in Queretaro to watch the silence prosetion, but due to the large amount of tourist I couldn't find a parking space on time, and had to park very far and walk a lot, when I finally reach the main plaza, it was too late. There where over 3000 thousand walkers in the prosetion, and like 20,000 people watching this event.

Paramedics from the Red Cross in bikes

So I only witness the crowded plazas and streets in dowtown, with 1,000 police officers making sure everything went ok, several ambulances parked and ready to act, and even paramedics on bikes, to reach the injured faster (in case of needed). I saw and old lady suffering some illness, to much walk maybe, so the ambulance took her.

Crowded streets in downtown Queretaro

Then I witness some teens getting attention of the media (national TV and newspapers) because they where in the plaza where the attack against the emos took place, they found a piece of paper and write something and just stay still and suddenly everybody was there taking photos of them and interviewing them. Later I saw the same kids talking about their "great idea" to get the media, and how they discovered something already discovered "The power of the ink" ignorant as it can be, they where very pleased to have that interviews and appear on national media.

Food stands in downtown Queretaro

On Glory Saturday I found that the state Water comission cancel the service in several neighborhoods (ver traditional) where there is this tradition of trhowing water to the people in the streets, so because it is a bad use of water they had no water that day. Later I went ot a casino with my friends and finally to the celebration of the "New Fire" (Fuego nuevo) where the main candle in the church is lighted fo the use in the entire year (Cirio Pascual), it is one of the most mystic events in the catholic church, in the church in my neighborhood the fire came from a cross on top of the building to a huge bondfire and from them the candle was lighted. The celebration take at least two hours!! at the end a party started, with food and sweets for everyone.

Guanajuato City

, , ,

Last week I traveled to the city of Guanajuato, it is an hour and half away from Santiago de Querétaro, it is a famous colonial town, the town was founded as a minning town, so at its peak it was a very rich town, with all that gives, which is a lot of plazas and gardens, beautiful buildings and many more things.

This city is the capital city of the state of Guanajuato, the same name, it is very small, right now its economy it's not based in minning, but in tourism, tons of people from all over the world came here every year.

Guanajuato was one of the first cities to fall in the hands of the independent movement of Miguel Hidalgo (the father of the country) and also it was the place where the spaniards tryed to give a sign to the people by hanging the lifeless head of the independence heroes in the corners of the Alhonidiga, a buildig that was taken before thanks to the imaginative Pipila. Benito Juarez lived here in time of the french invasion, and therefore it was the capital city of the Republic while Mexico city was the capital of the empire.

Diego Rivera (the husband of Frida) the famous painter was born in this city.

The city was built over a river, with the time the town needed more roads, so the city goverment built some reservoirs around the city to contain the water of the rivers, so they dryed the rivers and used the old river as roads, but since the city was built on top of it, this are now tunnels, built by the minners.

Here some photos.

Celaya, Guanajuato

, ,

My father's family is from Celaya, in the state of Guanajuato, is located about 50km away from Queretaro, in the 60's Celaya was larger than Queretaro, but since Queretaro's goverment focused to grow and to create an industrial infraestructure, Queretaro is now three times bigger, Celaya has like 350,000 people, and Queretaro has more than a million.

Celaya's main activity is agriculture and agriculture related industries (dairy, poultry, eggs, etc.) and a lot of agriculture trade takes place there.

I have a lot of relatives still living there, and in recent years the city has received (finally!) investment from the local, state and federal goverments. Celaya now has a brighter future ahead.

Is not a very colonial city, since it's best time was in the 60's and at that time the goverment didn't value the old buildings they almost destroyed the entire historic district to built new really ugly buildings, thank God they didn't destroyed all the churches. In that time the destroyed their bullring, and entire street has the houses cut in half (literally) in order to help pass the cars (progress and modernity first then beautification and history)

Some of their treasure buildings where demolish to have parking lots... so they ruined the city back then.

On the bright side, in the city hall there are great murals, and on the only plaza in town (Jardín principal) they have a train (I loved that train when I was a child).

And that is the city where my parents met, beacuse to get a better future my mother leave Salvatierra at age 18, there (Celaya) her sister went to college, and my father was friend of my mom's sister and friend of her cousin too and one thing take to other... and they are happily married.

Salvatierra, Guanajuato

, ,

As I mention in a previous post, my family roots are from Guanajuato, my dad's family still lives there (his brothers and sisters except for two of them) and my mom's family moved here, to Queretaro after my fathers moved (they help my grandpa to get a new job here back then)

My mom family is from the small town of Salvatierra, which was declared "Most loyal and novel city" but it's a city the size of a small town, it has little more than 100,000 people living there and it never grows.

Salvatierra is located 80km away from Queretaro, you have to go to Celaya and then take the road to Salvatierra (small old and dangerous road, be careful!!)

Salvatierra is home of the largest "Plaza" in Guanajuato, a big central garden, which is also the place of the main activity in city, single guys and girls go there to "walk" girls in one way and guy in the other (according to my grandma) when some of them find the right guy/girl they go to buy an ice cream (still does in the same ice cream store since... ever) and sit in a bench.

The city is crossed by the big and important Lerma River and it has a street where the river pass in between the street and the houses doors, great look.

I still had some family living there.

By the way my family is so proud to be "Salvaterrense" that all my cousins where born there, my uncles and aunts go there to have their babies in the same hospital.

The town never grows because the lack of investment and schools, if you want to study high school, there is only one in town and no colleges, so you have to go to nearby cities, like Celaya, Queretaro or León.

From Guanajuato...

, ,

I'm from Queretaro, but my entire family is from the near state of Guanajuato, and my family is so proud of it you couldn't believe it.

Guanajuato is a great state with tons of places, history and people, is one of the most populated states in Mexico, and one time tried to "eat" Queretaro, because Guajauato told the congress Queretaro was a small poor state.

And since in nearby and my family is from them, and actually all my actions and behavior are more related to Guanajuato than Queretaro (Queretanos are more introvertive and close to foreigners)

I post some photos of that beautiful state's capital, the city of Guanajuato and the mountain of "Cubilete" where is located a giagantic statue of Jesus Christ, built to "fight" against the anti religion goverment in the 30's in the "Guerra Cristera" (war against Christ)

Visit to Salvatierra

, , ,

As part of the celebration of the day of the dead, my family and I decided to made a short visit to Salvatierra, my mother's home town, it's a town of about 100,000 people, and it's being like that since ever, never growing not a little bit, it has one pizza place, no cinemas at all, one photo stand, one factory (where half the population works), it has one prepa (highschool), and only one garde or main plaza.

I have good memories there, since is my family's home town I pass several parties there, celebrating next to the river, or in my great aunts house, also is the place where my older realtive still lives, my dear aunt "Luz" she has 100 years old, this year we celebrate that, and she is still healthy, and very alive.

The city is dirty all the time and smells really bad, since there are a lot of drunk people and they piss everywhere. I have a theory that says "the smaller the town the greater the drunks".

Ice skating after more than 7 years

, , , ...

It was more than 7 years ago since I skate on ice, I actually learn to skate on ice, not on the road, beacuse in a trip when in junior high we went to a ice skating rink, and love it, went ther like 8 more times, later the rink suffer bankrupt (not because of me of course) and was closed, so I bought my firs in line wheel skates, and discover it was harder to skate on the road, due to the small stones and holes... well after 7 years of not skating on ice, and like 5 since no skating at all (my skates not fill any more and the ones that fit are really expensive) I went to a new rink in Leon, Gto. (a city located at 160km from Queretaro) at first I was all goofy, after half an hour I was little goofy, but remember that I loved to skate... And celebrating that here in Queretaro someone is building a new mall with an Ice skating rink, awsome and exited.

By the way I fell really bad, on my knees, it still hurts, and are all blue (bruise), but still a great day skating, hope to continue doing it again soon! Let's hope people here (Qro) build Pabellon Mall really fast.
