Censored Internet

,

Two weeks ago I had an uncensored internet access at work, something I apreciate, I must admit that I do spent some time (not many but some) using the internet at work for non work related things, like checking my facebook, mail friends, post at forums.

BUT, I do spent must of my time working, why do I take the "work" internet for other reasons, there are moments where I needed a break, from thinking work stuff, calling coworkers, clients and suppliers, I needed to disconnect from work and check if there is something outthere, to rest a little, to see that my friend got a new something, that another person send me photos from the vacations, after all we are social beings. Still I spent must of my time working, in total I can count between 20 and 30 minutes of not work related internet. But also I arrive at work at 8:00am and leave at 6:30pm (my normal time would be from 8:00am to 5:30pm) and I do it not because I wanted but because they asked me to (so I don't have problem of giving some personal time for the company)

I now have censored internet, a lot of website are blocked, I understand the non work related, but also others that I used to work like yousendit.com I work in marketing and I send a lot of files larger than 20mb (images, videos or mp3) because they are ads (among other stuff) in some cases I used gmail, but now I'm forced to use the company mail, which can not send mails larger than 3mb (in 1995 this would be great but now c'mon)}

I hate this, I guess I will be sending a lot of CD's by DHL or Fedex, I still need to send those files.

Did you know...

, ,

That the real spam kings are the people, your friends, may be yourself...

Did you ever wonder "how the spam guys got my mail?" well you can answer that question everytime somebody receives a funny mail and press "forward" and add as much email adresses as possible (of your beloved ones), well you are creating a database of real mails that can be used by spammers.

It took little to receive those mails, just write a überfunny mail, send it to as many people as possible, and in a few days that mail will return to you, with all the adresses of the other people who get it.

So in order to prevent SPAM proliferation this is the question you MUST ask yourself.

Google Maps arrived

, , , ...

Ok, Google maps has long time on the internet, but their service was "dedicated" to some countries (at the begining only USA, then UK, Germany, Japan, France...) I had the chance to see my city from the skies, but not the street information, neither the restaurants or stuff like that. Then Microsoft came out with Local.Live.com and since they are partnering with Telmex they got all info and streets and everything from the mexican yellow pages, it is very complete. Right now Google is now improving google maps and now you can see the streets of my city!!

There are some issues, like the hybrid view is not correct (the road names are moved) and there are no listed places, restaurants, hotels, and other stuff, but with time this will be fixed.

Youtube Mexico

, , ,

There is now a mexican version of the site Youtube, many 15 minutes famous people get their fame from youtube in Mexico, some of hte videos appear on national tv and the main characters went to talk shows and appear on magazines.

http://mx.youtube.com/ is the URL of the site.

Power to the people.

Person + Mobile phone (camera and voice recorder) + Internet = journalist...

Is not that simple of course, and problably if any journalsit read this will hate me, but I truly believe that the new technology is given power to the people.

In a mexican airplane in a mexican airport some deputies (representatives in the congress) where causing a flight delay by getting in trouble and disturbing the people in the plane, as members of the congres they have "immunity" and no one of the press where present, but a good passenger started to record everything in video in his mobile phone, then published it on the internet (youtube) and it get into the media, BIG NEWS!!! the congress men causing trouble and all was in record, the involed politicians of course denied it, but everything was on video.

The internet and its tools, like this space in My.Opera.com give tools that give power to the masses, to express different points of view, give you a wider perspective in the world arround you and even your own city or community.

Isn't internet great?

so the magic combination:

Person + Mobile Phone + Internet = Journalist

There are millions of journalist in the world thanks to that, try to shut their mouths!

Happy Internet Day!

,

So today is internet day, and I'm glad because... well the internet is the tool or the thing that helps people to get connected, informed with all the world, I truly believe that the internet is the real tool that gives power to the masses, since you only need a computer and your imagination or your experience and share things to the world, from the most trivial to the most important, now every person in the world is a potential journalist. How many time we read something on the internet written by a John Doe that later turn out to be true, or at least promoted an investigation that helps somehow.

Long live the internet.

By the way, yesterday was the Videogame anniversary, how I find out that, well in Discovery Channel they had like 4 hours of videogame specials.

To all internauts Happy Interent Day!!

And here some internet-sting facts of internet in Mexico (according to the Mexican Internet Asociation):
- 78% of the computers connected to the internet had broadband
- 22.7 million people had access to the internet in Mexico (24.6% of the population)
- 67% of them have uploaded a video and photos to services like youtube and flickr (youtube is by far the choice for mexicans)
- 57% had a personal website (maybe a blog)
- MySpace and Hi5 are the top social networks for mexicans
- 38% has a blog (I'm there!)
- 85% uses Google for search (probably this apply worldwide too)
- 92% consider internet the "MOST IMPORTANT MEDIA" well above mobile phones (2nd) and TV.
- 96% uses MSN messenger, before that we all used ICQ (until AOL bought it)
- 38% uses Wifi, could be in public places or in their house.
- Mexican internauts has Nokia and Sony Ericsson mobile phones mainly (I used to have a Nokia and change it for a Sony Ericsson, funny!)
- Podcasts are not very popular among mexicans
- The Xbox is more popular among internet users in Mexico
- Queretaro has 2% of the mexican internet population (whis is good since Queretaro has 1.5% of the population of the country)

Agressions on the internet

,

I don't know why but there is many people on the internet that believe that they are speaking to a machine, everytime they post a comment on a blog or in a forum or trough an email they think they are speaking to a machine.

Why I mention this, well, I'm a contant blogger, as you may notice, and also I love to post in forums and in other people blogs. But from time to time I receive answers or read comments from other people that are impressive, why, they are incredible rude, mean words and all kind of insults to other people opinions.

I like to post some of my trips in some travel sites and one day I receive a message saying that I was stupid to say that Boston was less known than New York, and that I was so wrong because Harvard was in Boston and all kind of stuff, well first of all that is your opinion and I respect it, but it was my travel diary, my personal opinion to that place on my vacation, and I actually speak really good thing about Boston, I replyed to that comment telling them not being so rude and that it was my humble opinion, and it was as valid as his, and I also added to remember that everything on the internet is a reflection of another human being, not a machine, and being rude here is like insulting another person in real life, it is the same!

That comes to case because I receive a nasty comment about my football team (soccer) from someone from San Luis (they are playing right this moment) saying really nasty words with a mean purpose. There is no need to that, I find it great that you cheer to San Luis, just like I cheer to Queretaro.

People, we all must remember that everything in forums, blogs and other places on the internet are work of another person, and we must show diplomacy and be polite, act just like you act on real life with other people, and respect OPINIONS since this are subjective and are as valid as any other person opinion.

I like internet because I can say I came to know people from all over the world, and you apresiable visitor to my blog know me too!, because I put my life here, my thoughts and my life is like a personal diary being public, which I like.

I found a link to the code of conduct to the blogs and internet, find it interesting but still need some work.

Bloggers Code of Conduct.

Rebelde in the world Top 10 Search

, , , ...

Belive it or not, the mexican tv show (soap opera) "Rebelde" is the number 7 topic that was search worldwide in Google, that shows the increasing influence of spanish language on the internet. I'm proud too beacuse I'm mexican, even though I never watched the show, but plenty of my college friends (99% women) watched every day.
