Crime, mexico, queretaro, Michoacan
You may have heard of the recommendations of the USA government to their citizens to avoid certain parts of the world, among them some parts of my country (Mexico). Well in the terrorist attack in Morelia some Queretanos resulted injured, none dead, but the local government is advising the citizens (of Queretaro) to extreme precautions when leaving the state, my state is the safest in the country.
This may sound funny since it is the same country, but it is real, and people do feel safe in Queretaro than in other states (as tourists) this is so real that some friends that have families from Michoacan receive phone calls asking them to find schools or housing to their cousins or little brothers in Queretaro, just like leaving an unsafe country.
I just hope that the local government do anything to prevent crime rates increase in the city and state.
A few weeks ago in the news some kidnappers attack a local entrepreneur in the city of San Juan del Rio in Queretaro, three hour later he was free (with three of the kidnappers captured), the next day the entire band of kidnappers captured, they where from Mexico city, just like a robbers band capture in the state, they came to rob here, but where capture before, also from Mexico city. This kind of actions increases confidence of the population for the local police.

Michoacan, mexico, Morelia, Crime
Last night everything looked normal, just like every other year, everybody celebrating the independence day with the traditional "Grito", families gathered togheter, watching fireworks, drinking, eating, singing, everything seemed normal.
Until this morning, when I found that in the capital city of the state of Michoacan, the city of Morelia, a troubleled city, a state already victim of criminals, of attacks, of death, but so far death of criminals in the hands of other criminals, but so far inocent civilians where safe... No more.
The party ended this morning, everybody in the country was worried, everybody was shocked, we want justice, we want to stop this.
The worst part, the terror, already friends that have family in that state are considering leaving the state of Michoacan, they are threaten every day, the police is so corrupt that you can not trust them, is not FAIR.
The state of Michoacan and the city of Morelia are "closed" all roads are controlled, nothing enters, nothing leaves, and the neighboring states (like mine) are afraid, Michoacan is a rat nest, we are afraid of new people that comes from Michoacan thinking they are related to crime (stereotypes).
I hope justice is made, and not scapegoats.

Crime, mexico, queretaro, Michoacan
I have several friends from Michoacan, a nehigbor state, the difference is gigantic, Queretaro has one of the best economies in the country, Santiago de Queretaro is considered the safest city and it has the highest GDP per capita, it is an industrial, agricultural and touristic hub and had economy growth of over 7% when the country had one of 3%, it is a middle class city. While Michoacan is one of the poorest states in the country, and probably the poorest in the center of the country (the poorest are in the south)
The economy of Michoacan is based in the tourism, agriculture and the money sent by the immigrants in the USA, and largely based in the drug dealing and production, which generates crime. Actually in my college we used to joke with the people from Michoacan telling them if they too work for the drug cartels, or actually being the bosses of them.
A friend of mine is from Uruapan, she is in Queretaro since she was 17 years old, she came to study here, she told me that the very first time she was here in a holiday she was amuzed that there was no gun shooting insted of fireworks, in Queretaro is kind of hard to find guns in the houses or people carrying them, while in Uruapan is common, also she liked the fact that here there are no fights among people using guns, because jealous attacks, just because you see somebody in a bad way or just because.
Amazing how two states in the same country can be so different.
By the way Michoacan is a beautiful state, great touristic destination, and not to worry about if you are not in funny stuff.

Patzcuaro, Trip, Travel, mexico
...
Last weekend was a friends Bday, and we (the friends and myself) went to her hometown to celebrate, and by a strange but vey convenient coincidence the date of her Bday matches the Day of the Dead, which is a big party in her town.
She has a strange tradition, well we notice it until today, to celebrate her Bday climbing something, last year we went to Bernal, which is a mountain (big rock actually), and last last year we went to Patzcuaro, and Janitzio climbing the island and the monument of Morelos to the top, this year we went to a mountain next to her town, and we, as lazy as we are, decided to use the car, my car, but my poor little car couldn't do it to the top, so like 700m away from the touristic stop we left the car and walk, we saw everything from that height, but there was another half of the mountain to climb, and we used the easy path, the stairs... there are stairs there for the last part of the mountain, 420 steps to be exact, and we climb it, up and down, so EXHAUSTED!!
The doctors said that every step is 5 seconds of more life, but my knees don't feel that way...

This is half the way in the stairs

Too many stairs
The worst stairs I ever climbed in my life where in Michoacan too, they have a facination to those, it was the Tzararacua fall (waterfall), it has over 800 stairs.

Holiday, Trip, mexico, Day of the Dead
...
Here is a day of the dead altar Michoacan's style, I spent the weekend in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, is located 3 hours away from my city, it is a small town of about 50,000 people, but is really beautiful, and is a very visited town (many hotels and tourists) and it is famous for their celebrations on the day of the dead, which I missed, because those took place on November 1st, and I arrived on the 2nd.
This is how Patzcuaro looks like.

mexico, Patzcuaro, Michoacan
Patzcuaro, a true gem city, it is really pretty, great weater, has a great lake... beautiful.
I have travel to Patzcuaro in several ocasions, it is always pretty, it is small in size but big in beautyness (is that a word?)
In order to presever everything there, the goverment passed a law that forbides to have "modern signs" and any other modern stuff that will contrast the city colonial look. All signs and houses look alike, the same style, of course they have their own distictive things.
The weather is cold all year long, but the sun is a really burning your skin in afternoon. It rains a lot all year long, so there are tons of trees, and is sorounded by forest and lakes.
Some of my photos are from Patzcuaro and others are from nearby towns.

Michoacan, queretaro, Border, Drugs
...
You must know about the wall the US is building in their border to control migration and drug traffic, well in my state we are "closing" the borders to control migration and traffic of drug dealers and their products, Querétaro is by far a safe place, we don't have serious crime problems, it is rare to be robed in here, but Michoacan a neighbor state has big problems in safety, tons of murders, drugs, dealers, etc. etc. the federal goverment stablish something like a martial law in Michoacan, and Queretaro goverment as all the other states that share border with Michoacan had decided to close their border with them to avoid the roaches (criminals running to other places), as you see inside Mexico we have traffic problems too, many states, like Queretaro, who has no problems of crime want to stay the same, to avoid the mafia and prevent them to arrive, but we share border with an infested state.
Just another thing, the problem in Michoacan is so big that when in college all of the students that where from Michoacan everybody made jokes about them dedicating their future careers in drugs, or being them involved in drugs, because the stereotypes says "everybody in Michoacan has to do something with drugs"... So sad!
Hope the operative give some peace and calm to the state of Michoacan which is really pretty, lots of forests and lakes, but very poor.
