Durango city

, , ,

For work reasons I was sent to the city of Durango in the north of Mexico, it is the capital of the state of the same name.

The city has being used as location for several movies, from westerns to sci-fi and some others. A coworker told me of the city cathedral and a great mexican restaurant "Las Chonas" I don't get why not a single local told me of the main plaza in the historic district, or the cathedral, or the restaurant, this are amazing places, and there are some museums of the movies that had been filmed there.

So after all I visited the super famous Mall and the not so famous but beautiful historic district, it is very pretty, so bad I went at midnight, when everything was closed. The restaurant "Las Chonas" is amazing, affordable, beautiful and delicious, althoug is very difficult to get there.

Quick trip to Morelia

, , ,

On thursday the company I work for sent me to Morelia, the city is located 120 kilometers south of Queretaro, but due to poor infrastructure you have to drive north first then go south, so in time, it is far, 3 hours by bus.

Morelia is the capital of the state of Michoacan, one of que poorest in the country, but very rich in culture and natural resources.

Morelia was a very important city in times of the viceroyalty, so it has a magnificent historic district.

Lucky for me my hotel was located just across the cathedral and the main plaza. So even though I arrived at midnight I could see some touristic spots and buildings.

Last time I went to Morelia that part of the city was full of street vendors and dirt, not anymore, is clean and pretty, well lit, and so far safe, at least I felt safe, the amount of people around help me feel safe.

Walking in 5 de Mayo

, , , ...

5 de Mayo in the city of Santiago de Queretaro is one of the main streets in the historic district in downtown, this street has many restaurants and other venues and leads to the government plaza, where the state government is located.

From the "Santa Cruz" church to the "Jardín Zenea" this is what you will see.

Villahermosa

Villahermosa Tabasco 2008 (66), originalmente cargada por Yorch Arturo.

Last week I went to Villahermosa, in the state of Tabasco, this was because of work, but I take the chance to go to the city downtown and the park "La Venta" which is a Zoo and a museum.

The city is lovely, mid size city, surrounded by rivers and jungle it is a very hot and humid place, it was like 30°C and according to locals it was cool.

The rivers are great, they should take more advantage of them, for tourism and recreation, the museum is great, I had the chance to see the Olmec head, something we see in school since... always in every grade, they where the very first civilized culture in Mexico, the fathers of all others.

Veracruz

Veracruz 2008 Nov (76), originalmente cargada por Yorch Arturo.

For work reasons I went to the city and port of Veracruz, it is, in my humble opinion, the best beach city in Mexico, is not touristic, which in Mexico means it is a real city, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, any other beach town you think of is like Disneyland, fake, great but fake, why, well everything is about the tourist, the mexican food is so fake in those places, over mexicanized, while this city is large, like a million people, and the economy is diversify, industry, port, tourism, commerce, petroleum (pemex) and other stuff too.

I stay in the metro area of Boca del Rio, 10km from the downtown, I walk that one day thinking it was a shorter distance.

I truly say that of the beach towns and cities this is the only one I could live, because it is a real city, with all the things yo need of a city, and an affordable price (Cancun, Pto Vallarta and others are so overprice)

Visit it if yo can, it is a good place to be.

Hermosillo

, , ,

Last week I went for work reasons to Hermosillo the capital city of the state of Sonora, it is a 600,000 (estiamte) people, the city the largest of the state and the name means something like "little beauty" and the people is very nice, kind and the girls are pretty.

When asking the extremely expensive cabs what to do in the city, they answered "nothing" the nice part was the hotel zone with the nightclubs that are just like any other club, or that I could go to Bahía Kino (beach town an hour from there)

The downtown is a dead zone after 6:00pm, there is no cultural activity (this in words of the citizens) and the restaurant options are Meat, Chinese, McDonald's like and Meat.

I forgot some clothing for two days so I asked for a Shopping Center, there is only one, Plaza Sendero, and not very pretty, when asked for the mall they told me first of supermarkets, because there use to be no malls.

For business trips, the city is fine it has a nice new Convention Center (well it has like 5 years), good size. The hotels are nice and plenty options, located in the hotel zone which is the cool part of the city, I also liked the coffee store Caffenio.

Some more on Puebla

, , ,

After a week in the city of Puebla, which is like "the door to the south" of mexico, from Puebla you know that already are in the south of Mexico, but still near the center or in the center.

A fountain near my hotel, in a park, the design of the fountain is great, the architect used tiles (something emblematic of Puebla), a little dirty, but still can be pretty, creepie at night (not enough light)

The city of Puebla

, , ,

I just arrived to the city of Puebla, the fourth largest in Mexico, historically important, old and classy... Well the historic district.

This city used to be the second most important in the country, also the second largest.

The historic district is full of historic buildings and legends, the cathedral is breath taking probably, with Mexico city's, the only real cathedral (compared with the european cathedrals)

The bad part, the garbage, there is dirt everywhere, graffiti in every place, and the people, one of the worst drivers in Mexico, they don't care about the pedestrians, I literally had to jump to avoid being hit by a bus in a pedestrian pass (with zebra lines), and they have an obsession with the honk, noise all the time, they honk pedestrians even. So rude!

Also the rest of the city (outside historic part) is really ugly, first I thought I was in a bad, poor neighborhood, but continue riding everything looked the same.

There is a modern part of the city where the "in" mall is located, the golf course and the expensive stores and universities, this part looks nice, even to live there, if you can afford it, very notorious where the rich live.

Mineral de Pozos

, , , ...

I went with my friends to Mineral de Pozos in the neghboring state of Guanajuato, this small town is located at 1 hour from Queretaro, we went to visit the old mineral haciendas, where minning production took place a long ago (in times of the viceroyalty), this haciendas are all in ruins, which makes them very special, and dangerous (there are signs warning of the mines, holes, and other stuff) in one of this old ruin haciendas we played gotcha (paintball) incredible scenary for the activity.

Playing paintball in a ruined hacienda from the 1700's is an incredible experience, a lot of place to hide and shoot. Since I'm very tall, 1.90 (like 6ft) I was an easy target, but still my team won, it was very competitive. In the find the treasure game I found it, but a clever maneuver from other team, they where hidding next to the commander (the guy we had to give the treasure in order to win) I thougt I was winning... My teammate was ocuppy covering me from other guys. Still I'm proud of being the one who almost got it, I was so near!

Also the haciendas are very impresive, since where constructed in hills, incredible view.

Totally worth it.

México City

, , ,

The past two weeks I've been in México city, for work reasons.

The city is the cultural and financial center of the country, full of contrasts.

The city has a lot to offer but also has a lot of traffic, so if you work a normal amount of time you have no chance to enjoy the city. To enjoy it you have two choices... be rich or be bohemian.

Also this city is a big remind that we still are a developing country, the rich are a few and extremly rich, the poor are so poor and a lot of them, middle class exist but their living conditions are bad, the police is so corrupt, the streets are dangerous and in general full of garbage, except the rich neighborhoods that look amazing.

Due to traffic I have little time to enjoy the city, the good thing is that I was in a hotel in the pink zone, one of the nice neighborhoods with tons of nightclubs.

So visiting Mexico city is a true experience, I go too much over there, and know how it works and when people try to take advantage of me, so many locals believe I'm from there.
