Rancho El Molino

Rancho El Molino, originalmente cargada por Yorch Arturo.

I went to a wedding in Rancho El Molino near the city of Santiago de Queretaro, but not in the same municipality, this place is beautiful, it s located almost at the entrance of Chichimequillas community, in the municipality of El Marquez.

A great place for a wedding indeed.

Pastry

Cakes, originalmente cargada por Yorch Arturo.

Don't you think that pastry always looks so pretty and delicious, all the colors in the cakes, you almost know the flavors by the color.

This are from a bakery store in Queretaro, located in Jardines de la Hacienda neighborhood, e place has coffee, pastry, cakes, gelatto and other swetties, the place is very comfortable and the taste of everything simply amazing, my favorite is the cheesecake with all kind of berries.

The place is called Caramel, totally recommended.

Crazy Weather

, ,

Today the weather forecast at Accuweather is crazy, claiming "snow" for Queretaro, if that is true I'll be very happy to see snow in my town.

Just a little colder

, ,

This is one of the coldest winters I remember.

Contrary to what many people believe, in Mexico we do have stations, spring, summer, autum and winter. In some parts of the country there is snow, but those are small forgotten towns in the middle me nowhere.

Winter in Queretaro is commonly short and not so cold, is something like 5 degrees at night and 18 or 20 at day, with one or two days of colder nights and days. But this year all winter has been colder, with 0 or even -2 at night and 10 or 12 at day. But not a few days, everyday.

I know that is nothing in many countries, just remember that because we don't usually have that kind of weather our clothes, houses, and work places are not prepared, so no house has a heather, just small ugly ones we use once a year, and don't work with such cold conditions.

I'm using my jackets and all winter clothing like never before.

I remember 3 other cold winters, but only a day or two was this cold, one year we reached -6 degrees, my dad's car had frost on the windshield, and he poured water over it, the water was frozen before it reach the end of the windshield.

Another year we had snow, but it melted a few moments later.

Other year we have ice rain, and the frozen water remained at the side of the streets the entire day.

And finally this year with weeks of colder than average weather.

I like this weather, I sleep better, had a chance to use all my winter cloths, and things look more colorful.

The bad part is that some people die, because of the weather or because our old ugly heathers are not made for prologated use and produced to many CO2, or create a short circuit.

More taxes / Más impuestos

, , , ...

The mexican chamber of deputies passed the budget for 2010 to the senate, because they need more money for next year and they need to improve the economic situation, the solution... Rise of taxes, because in their tiny minds 1% more in VAT, 2% more in ISR, and other special taxes add resources, but they don't undertand how economy works.

We are facing inflation, so our money has less value, the VAT increment means even more inflation (in the form of a tax) and since we are in crisis there will be no salary increment, so less purchase power to the masses, add to that the increment in ISR which is the tax over your income (salary) so you have less money to spend in more expensive items.

So I will have like 15% to 20% less purchasing power, I'm more poor or less rich.

But lets thank them we don't have vat in the food (raw) and medicines...(sarcasm) That doesn't matter since I have 20% less money.

They worried more for that absence of tax in those products than the real problem, we have socialized healthcare, so in theory we don't need the special treatment in tax to medicine, because we should be able to get it for free at our public clinics. But the healthcare politicians spent more money on salaries and bonuses to the worker than in medicines.

If they really want to help the economy and people, we need a general vat of 15% but a lower ISR so we have more money to spend without affecting companies, and here the law of demand and offering starts, if I have more money, I will buy more, in order to satisfy the demand we need to produce more, so we hire more people, and so more consumers.

Gallos Blancos first game 2009 Opening season

, , , ...

Gallos Blancos of Queretaro lost the first match, not a very good news for a team that needs to do a lot of points to stay on the league.

Many sports news sites and papers (even tv) say the other team was given a free penalty shoot that tied the game. That may be true, but that is not a reason to not give all the effort to win, there are bad referees but that is not a reason not to win, no matter the bad referee you have to give everything to win, if there are goals there is nothing the referee can do.

So C'mon! gallos don't look for excuses, look for goals.

Durango city

, , ,

For work reasons I was sent to the city of Durango in the north of Mexico, it is the capital of the state of the same name.

The city has being used as location for several movies, from westerns to sci-fi and some others. A coworker told me of the city cathedral and a great mexican restaurant "Las Chonas" I don't get why not a single local told me of the main plaza in the historic district, or the cathedral, or the restaurant, this are amazing places, and there are some museums of the movies that had been filmed there.

So after all I visited the super famous Mall and the not so famous but beautiful historic district, it is very pretty, so bad I went at midnight, when everything was closed. The restaurant "Las Chonas" is amazing, affordable, beautiful and delicious, althoug is very difficult to get there.

Nacho Libre

,

I just watch nacho libre on tv, at first I thought I was going to watch another stereotypical film that offends mexicans. I was wrong, it is a funny movie, not oscar worthy, but funny.

The first thing I notice about the film is that it is based in the mexican films of the 60's and early 70's (before ficheras). The story the characters, the settings, everything.

The colors of the film, very colorfull and bright, the location a small town in Oaxaca, that adds a lot to the story.

I think the Nacho character was based mainly in Tintan and as a second influence Capulina, he even looks like him, the scene of Nacho getting into the house of the rich promoter and him singing to Ramses is like seeing Tintan, in any of his movies, also the heroe that everything he does is for the needed is like "La máscara del zorrillo" also Capulina did some movies of him saving the children.

The depiction of the mexican tradition of luchas is very authentic.

Another scene that remind me of Tintan, was the one with Esqueleto and the promoter's daughter is like seeing La Vitola and Tintan.

The conflict of the church traditions with a church member, we saw that in "Sor Yeye"

I'm glad of Jack Black performance, and all the other actors.

I would like to see mexican movies like that being made again, I like many of the films that are made this days in Mexico, but some of that silly easy innocent humor back sure don't hurt, also we most remember that those movies were made in the Golden Era of mexican cinema.

Quick trip to Morelia

, , ,

On thursday the company I work for sent me to Morelia, the city is located 120 kilometers south of Queretaro, but due to poor infrastructure you have to drive north first then go south, so in time, it is far, 3 hours by bus.

Morelia is the capital of the state of Michoacan, one of que poorest in the country, but very rich in culture and natural resources.

Morelia was a very important city in times of the viceroyalty, so it has a magnificent historic district.

Lucky for me my hotel was located just across the cathedral and the main plaza. So even though I arrived at midnight I could see some touristic spots and buildings.

Last time I went to Morelia that part of the city was full of street vendors and dirt, not anymore, is clean and pretty, well lit, and so far safe, at least I felt safe, the amount of people around help me feel safe.

Once upon a time in Mexico

,

I never watch that movie, until last week, why, it was very entertaining.

It is a weird depiction of Mexico, because the president looks like a president of Mexico in the 19th century, also looks like the mexico of the 70's,because of the church scenes and the drug dealers (how they look), and a Mexico of the late 90's, the cellphones.

The movie was shot in Santiago de Queretaro (my home city) and San Miguel Allende (near Queretaro), but everything in the movie happens in Culiacan (located more than 1000 kilometers away), but still they show landmarks that are only of Queretaro and San Miguel, the "Teatro de la República" and the cathedral of San Miguel, this are buildings that are located only in those cities, and there are no other like them in the country. Also they show Culiacan as a colonial city (Queretaro and San Miguel are) but Culiacan has nothing colonial, actually it is quite "modern" although they have a nice colonial looking (but not colonial it was built in times of Porfirio Diaz like almost all the historic buildings there) cathedral, that is the only building that could be comparable in the movie.

This scene was shot in the "Carmen" church, the floor tiles are unique, since tiles were hand made in those days, and the design was created for every building in particular.

This was shot outside the "Carmen" church

The the theater of the republic.
