In this post I will share any Opera tips that will come to mind. I will try to keep this up-to-date, so it might be worth while to revisit this post once in a while.
The first batch of tips is a compilation of tips from the Opera Tips twitter page. There are lots more there, but I chose to most prominent ones for me.
Here Goes!
Tip #1 Right-click on a tab and choose "Lock Tab". This option will affectively disallow actions such as accidentally closing the tab.
Tip #2 Fast and simple scrolling with the space bar. Pressing the scroll bar will scroll the document down. Once the document's bottom is reached, pressing the scroll bar will load the next page.
Tip #3 Automatic page refreshes. Right-click on a page and choosing Reload Every will enable you to set an automatic interval to reload the page.
Tip #4 Click and hold the Back button to see a list of previously visited websites - for the currently active tab.
Tip #5 You can perform an inline search by pressing either "." or "/".
Tip #6 After the search, you can jump through the results by using the F3 key.
Tip #7 Use Opera Link to have your bookmarks with you, wherever you install the Opera browser.
Many moons have passed since my last Opera-related post. What has happened since?
Lots of updates to My Opera (none of them, of course, dealt with the various BiDi problems...)! Opera 10 was released. Opera Mini 5 beta was released. Opera 10.10 "Unite Edition" was released. Wow.
Looks like it has mostly been Good Times(TM).
The Opera browser is now better than ever in regards to BiDi support (and in general, too!!). There are still various kinks to work out but overall - really good.
I am really excited to be able to help the Opera developers improve the browser and its BiDi/RTL support; the past few years have been very rewarding (being an Elektran and all), and I really look forward for an even better Opera in 2010.
Other then that, I have also switched to Mac and I now own an aluminum Macbook 13" (late 2008 edition). The transition to OS X was really smooth; I've most alternative and even superior applications to use and I am really enjoying every moment (for real!). Opera for Mac also works and looks great. If you get the chance then I sincerely suggest you a Mac.
As my blog's title suggest - I am not big on blogging, not because I don't like it or find it pointless; I'm just not big on it personally. I'm a reader, not a writer. That said, today is a special and important day and I find myself compelled to chim in and actually write.
Today is Blog Action Day 2009 on the subject of Climate Change, and while I am certainly no expert, but I believe this issue is Very Important(TM). The world's nations cannot and must not put this matter aside or on the "back burner" any longer. Our world is "falling apart" because of our own doing, and it is important that we all take a stand and decide that it is time to undo our damages.
Please, take notice of this and try to raise the awareness of this issue in your own respected countries. Take action.
This list is no longer maintained. Maybe in the future.
Some order is needed...
I am watching A LOT of series and sometimes I lose track of which ones I've watched in the past. I like to collect seemingly random and useless data, but I also want to share this particular one as I think it will benefit other TV buffs out there.
I use pogsdesign's wonderful TV calender to keep track of air dates of the numerous series I currently follow. Really great.
So here is my [alphabetically ordered] list of series which I have followed during the years (and still follow). Highly recommended by me!
After almost two years in development cycle it looks like Opera 9.5 is finally reaching its Final milestone. While I can't say I am totally pleased with its BiDi support, I do praise it for the giant leap forward in that support since the 9.2x days.
Opera Link, Speed Dial, more new features, new technologies, better support for existing ones, many many many fixed bugs, better stability, perfomance and speed, a new skin (which I have come to love, although it still has some minor issue), and more (I'm sure we'll get the complete list soon enough). All of these make Opera 9.5 IMO a very good release, amongs a stiff competition from Firefox 3 and Safari. Each with its own set of weaknesses and strong points.
That said, there are unfortunatly new regressions in 9.5 compared to 9.2x in respect to BiDi, but also luckly threre are less regressions than new bugs or fixed bugs. I am sure that 9.5x, 9.6(?) and 10.0 will have more fixed BiDi bugs and also hopefully new things in store for us.
Here is for Opera 9.5, the best Opera release yet (can't please them all, of course)...!
How long will RTL users must suffer here? The RTL community here (those who use Hebrew and Arabic and such) is not a small group of people. Opera has a huge market out there that is just being ignored.
Okay, so you don't want to take it upon yourself just yet to convert the various pages (personal, group) and add BiDi support. Fine.
BUT FOR THE LOVE OF WHATEVER, AT LEAST ADD RTL SUPPORT FOR THE GODAMN GROUP FORUMS. It is crippled. It is F***ing annoying and it doesn't make any of us want to write here.
And to think it is merely just adding scriptingly one flippin tag to the mark-up... But as always, excuses previle.
I've been an OM user for quite a while, but only recently I have bothered myself with reading a bit about the shortcuts and modes that are provided.
This is really Good Stuff(tm)! I'm totally loving the ease of switching between Desktop to Mobile view and back, it's really comfertable and makes the whole process of navigating via Mobile a real pleasure. Even the BiDi support works well.
Most excellent.
I do have a wishlist item, though... I know that OM tries to detect phone numbers and make them 'dial-able', but that obviously doesn't always work and doesn't cover all formats and use-cases. So my wish is to add a key-combo that will transform the keypad to your regular dialing keys while still in OM view and allow you to dial the number while you are looking at it. Pressing the key-combo again will switch the keys back to OM-navigation keys and what not...
For the past 82 days the university lecturers here in Israel have been on strike, basicly claiming the government owes them money (what else...) for the continuous decline in their salary in the past X years. This, of course, happens on the backs of the students who for the past two months+ studied only part of their courses and some no courses at all(!).
This upcoming sunday is actually the last day of the semester! But to make things worse, this upcoming sunday is also the last day of the lecturer's ultimatum; as they have threatened to CANCEL the semester if the government will not address their demands. What does this mean for the students, the courses that took place and the upcoming exams (and many more questions) - no one knows. Infact, no one has got any infromation what-so-ever.
This is shit.
This is actually the second time in a row there is a strike here. The first one took place on the second semester of the previous year (my freshman year), only that time it was the students union who striked against the high tuition tag for academic studies in public universities.
sigh. This is not the academic life I imagined for myself. Complete uncertainty.
John Forsyth, VP of strategy at Symbian, seems to think that browser monopolies are good for you :
One target browser covering most of the world's phones is a good thing.
Considering the lesson we learned with IE, this sounds odd. What about all the people who are not using that browser? Then again, ...
The Japanese Choose Opera blog has a post showing Jon browsing the Web on a Sony digital photo frame . There's even a video . Browsing the Web isn't exactly the first thing that would come to mind when buying a digital photo frame, but it has a lot of potential, and shows the wide range of devices O ...
Today's press release on downloads and number of users reveals that the number of downloads four days after release has increased from 1 million 2005 (Opera 8) to 4.7 million with the release of Opera 9.5. The number of actual desktop users users has actualy doubled since 9.0 in 2006, and is now mor ...
Mozilla Japan is apparently claiming that Firefox 3 is two times faster than Opera 9.5. Does that mean that I can claim that Opera is an infinitely smaller download than Firefox and get away with it?
Opera is on the front page of download.com today:
The latest version of the Opera browser is here, and it's a stunner. Integrated theme previews, an improved address bar search tool, built-in torrent support, and real-time fraud prevention earned Opera 9.5 a coveted five-star review.
