Opera 10.x

, , ,

Many moons have passed since my last Opera-related post.
What has happened since?

Lots of updates to My Opera (none of them, of course, dealt with the various BiDi problems...)!
Opera 10 was released. Opera Mini 5 beta was released. Opera 10.10 "Unite Edition" was released. Wow.

Looks like it has mostly been Good Times(TM).

The Opera browser is now better than ever in regards to BiDi support (and in general, too!!).
There are still various kinks to work out but overall - really good.

I am really excited to be able to help the Opera developers improve the browser and its BiDi/RTL support; the past few years have been very rewarding (being an Elektran and all), and I really look forward for an even better Opera in 2010.

Other then that, I have also switched to Mac and I now own an aluminum Macbook 13" (late 2008 edition).
The transition to OS X was really smooth; I've most alternative and even superior applications to use and I am really enjoying every moment (for real!). Opera for Mac also works and looks great. If you get the chance then I sincerely suggest you a Mac.

Opera 9.5 Coming

, , , ...

After almost two years in development cycle it looks like Opera 9.5 is finally reaching its Final milestone. While I can't say I am totally pleased with its BiDi support, I do praise it for the giant leap forward in that support since the 9.2x days.

Opera Link, Speed Dial, more new features, new technologies, better support for existing ones, many many many fixed bugs, better stability, perfomance and speed, a new skin (which I have come to love, although it still has some minor issue), and more (I'm sure we'll get the complete list soon enough). All of these make Opera 9.5 IMO a very good release, amongs a stiff competition from Firefox 3 and Safari. Each with its own set of weaknesses and strong points.

That said, there are unfortunatly new regressions in 9.5 compared to 9.2x in respect to BiDi, but also luckly threre are less regressions than new bugs or fixed bugs. I am sure that 9.5x, 9.6(?) and 10.0 will have more fixed BiDi bugs and also hopefully new things in store for us.

Here is for Opera 9.5, the best Opera release yet (can't please them all, of course)...!

Opera Mini 4 [beta]

, , , ...

Today marks the release of the beta version of Opera Mini 4. This is of special interest for me as one of its new features is BiDi support, which of course includes the Hebrew language.

This is a great day for Israeli Opera users as it means that support for our language is now coming to the mobile realm of Opera. Starting with Opera Mini but since its core engine is the same one to be used in future Desktop and Mobile versions of Opera, this means BiDi support is coming for Opera Mobile as well!

There are plenty of bugs and regressions, but this is fine and natural for a beta release.
I'm looking forward to test, report and enjoy this new support.

I would love if fellow Israeli users will begin their testing and report their findings at the Hebrew Group!

Thank you Opera.

Hebrew Group Progress Report

,

In the past few months there has been clear progress, many more users have signed up, we now clock at 20 users.
Unfortunatly, the last few weeks have been the weaksest and there was not much activity in the forums.

On the other hand, the blog has been quite active.
Many posts regarding Opera news as well as various enchancements in the form of UserJS scripts have been been blogged about.

I wish there would be more response in the form of comments in the blog.
I'm sure it'll happen in the future.

It seems that Opera 9.0's release is just around the corner.
I'm expecting some "buzz" in the forums about it. Finally some action!

I'll see you there...

The Hebrew Group and Gaining Momentum

,

I recently started locating Opera issues, fixable ones, that also relate to Israeli users and have address them via the group's blog.

Currently there are only two issues address:
1. The media player at walla!news and
2. Explaining in Hebrew how to config gMail as well as Opera Mail to work together

I'm still looking for more fixable issues to write about. Any suggestions?

I am also looking to expand the reach of the group to more users and invite them over so that the group's size will grow more 'officialy' (re group members count).

These kind of things take, erm, time. bleh.
