tips, opera
In this post I will share any Opera tips that will come to mind. I will try to keep this up-to-date, so it might be worth while to revisit this post once in a while.
The first batch of tips is a compilation of tips from the
Opera Tips twitter page. There are lots more there, but I chose to most prominent ones for me.
Here Goes!Tip #1Right-click on a tab and choose "Lock Tab". This option will affectively disallow actions such as accidentally closing the tab.
Tip #2Fast and simple scrolling with the space bar. Pressing the scroll bar will scroll the document down. Once the document's bottom is reached, pressing the scroll bar will load the next page.
Tip #3Automatic page refreshes. Right-click on a page and choosing Reload Every will enable you to set an automatic interval to reload the page.
Tip #4Click and hold the Back button to see a list of previously visited websites - for the currently active tab.
Tip #5You can perform an inline search by pressing either "." or "/".
Tip #6After the search, you can jump through the results by using the F3 key.
Tip #7Use
Opera Link to have your bookmarks with you, wherever you install the Opera browser.

opera, hebrew, mac, updates

Many moons have passed since my last Opera-related post.
What has happened since?
Lots of updates to My Opera (none of them, of course, dealt with the various BiDi problems...)!
Opera 10 was released. Opera Mini 5 beta was released. Opera 10.10 "Unite Edition" was released. Wow.

Looks like it has mostly been Good Times(TM).
The Opera browser is now better than ever in regards to BiDi support (and in general, too!!).
There are still various kinks to work out but overall - really good.
I am really excited to be able to help the Opera developers improve the browser and its BiDi/RTL support; the past few years have been very rewarding (being an Elektran and all), and I really look forward for an even better Opera in 2010.
Other then that, I have also switched to Mac and I now own an aluminum Macbook 13" (late 2008 edition).
The transition to OS X was really smooth; I've most alternative and even superior applications to use and I am really enjoying every moment (for real!). Opera for Mac also works and looks great. If you get the chance then I sincerely suggest you a Mac.

9.5, bidi, kestrel, final
...

After almost two years in development cycle it looks like Opera 9.5 is finally reaching its Final milestone. While I can't say I am totally pleased with its BiDi support, I do praise it for the giant leap forward in that support since the 9.2x days.
Opera Link, Speed Dial, more new features, new technologies, better support for existing ones, many many many fixed bugs, better stability, perfomance and speed, a new skin (which I have come to love, although it still has some minor issue), and more (I'm sure we'll get the complete list soon enough). All of these make Opera 9.5 IMO a very good release, amongs a stiff competition from Firefox 3 and Safari. Each with its own set of weaknesses and strong points.
That said, there are unfortunatly new regressions in 9.5 compared to 9.2x in respect to BiDi, but also luckly threre are less regressions than new bugs or fixed bugs.

I am sure that 9.5x, 9.6(?) and 10.0 will have more fixed BiDi bugs and also hopefully new things in store for us.
Here is for Opera 9.5, the best Opera release yet (can't please them all, of course)...!

You read it correctly.
Lars Kleinschmidt brought this cool idea to the attention of the My Opera community in his blog.
You can
read about it here.
Credits for the original idea go to "Mr Nobody" from

mobile, opera, mini
I've been an OM user for quite a while, but only recently I have bothered myself with reading a bit about the shortcuts and modes that are provided.
This is really Good Stuff(tm)!
I'm totally loving the ease of switching between Desktop to Mobile view and back, it's really comfertable and makes the whole process of navigating via Mobile a real pleasure. Even the BiDi support works well.

Most excellent.

I do have a wishlist item, though...
I know that OM tries to detect phone numbers and make them 'dial-able', but that obviously doesn't always work and doesn't cover all formats and use-cases. So my wish is to add a key-combo that will transform the keypad to your regular dialing keys while still in OM view and allow you to dial the number while you are looking at it. Pressing the key-combo again will switch the keys back to OM-navigation keys and what not...

That's right! I finally got a 3G phone - the Nokia E65.
I am really happy with my choice. I do have some disappointment from the Symbian 9.1 OS but I can live with it...
Sorry for the bad pic.

game, wishes, opera, tag
Well, I guess
I'm in as well...
So,
My 5 wishes for future Opera are:
- Some have wished for a UserJS GUI and I'd like to join that collective. I feel that, unfortunally, this feature is being mishandled by Opera IMO. There is no support for it coming not from the browser aspect, nor from the community aspect. Opera needs to straighten up, take responsability and make something useful with this most excellent feature.
- A personal favorite of mine is BiDi support. Opera lacks in that department (all across the browser - M2, GUI, websites). I wish there would be a stronger, more focused, effort from Opera to support us RTL users.
- Another wish for me is having a more dynamic or fluid or however one would name, interface. While Opera's interface is very customizable, it is still quite restrictive.
- For the love of Opera, make M2 more responsive. If there's something I hate, it's finding out that M2 got "stuck" and then having to reset it by various ways and get a huge amount of mail. argh!
- And last one - more marketing. Don't be afraid to market yourselfs! Also, open an office in Israel!
And now to tag five other persons.

bidi, mobile, opera, hebrew
...

Today marks the release of the beta version of Opera Mini 4. This is of special interest for me as one of its new features is BiDi support, which of course includes the Hebrew language.
This is a great day for Israeli Opera users as it means that support for our language is now coming to the mobile realm of Opera. Starting with Opera Mini but since its core engine is the same one to be used in future Desktop and Mobile versions of Opera, this means BiDi support is coming for Opera Mobile as well!
There are plenty of bugs and regressions, but this is fine and natural for a beta release.
I'm looking forward to test, report and enjoy this new support.
I would love if fellow Israeli users will begin their testing and report their findings at the
Hebrew Group!

Thank you Opera.

opera, life
I suppose I didn't exactly follow what I wrote in the Sticky above...
No posts since that one (the edited version).

Exciting times in Opera World,
- Opera v9.5 is appearantly just around the corner with v10 racing behind it. I am hoping for many BiDi fixes, much deserved fixes.
- New My.Opera didn't ship with BiDi tweaks but hopefully this could be addressed as soon as humenly possible.
- The Hebrew Group has written an Opera Mini guide in Hebrew, covering Everything Mini.
- More stuff we don't yet know about, as usual.

Aside of that, finished my first semester in the university with good grades. I'm pleased.

Five semesters to go!
