The Lion and the Lionesse

I just thought I wanted to share a couple of shots of the lions, I took last time I was in the Zoo.

Here's the male lion, Oleg. He came to Copenhagen Zoo in July 2003, after two lionesses had killed the old male lion. Oleg was five years old when he arrived, and he managed to earn the female lions' respect. He is now the father of many lion cubs, and the new life makes the lion cage worth a visit.


The staff passed the cage with two Camels, that's why this beauty of a lioness is so attentive! :love:

@ Darko ~ They are much more active when it's cold, than in the summer, where they just lay there. :smile:

The two alpha-lionesses decided that the old male was too weak, so they attacked him and killed him. I'm sure that taught some kids the law of nature the hard way. :D

They kept him away from the lionesses to begin with, just so close that the lionesses could feel his scent and "get used" to him. And their first meeting was followed closely, in order to interfere if things went wrong. Luckily he was a strong alpha lion, knowing how to handle the ladies. :D

Oleg must be about 10 years of age now. As far as I remember, he was five years old when he was brought to Zoo from Hungary in 2003. Picture travelling from Budapest in a horse carriage to be confronted with two bloodthirsty lioness sisters who just slaughtered a male lion. I agree with Rose-Marie. Good thing, he didn't know.

Unless, of course, the ladies told him about it through the fence before he was let in with them...
